    So fine: this, in homage:
    IMPRESSIVE AND MELANCHOLY
    Bach mourns the death of a beloved queen.
    There is a good chance that Bach played this impressive piece for the first time in St Paul’s Church in Leipzig. That is where, on 17 October 1727, the university held a memorial service for the recently departed Christiane Eberhardine der Starke, who was the Electress of Saxony and the Queen of Poland. For this occasion, Bach wrote ‘funeral music in Italian style’: the cantata Lass, Fürstin, lass noch einen Strahl, BWV 198. During the ceremony, Bach played the organ himself. He opened with this prelude and ended with a fugue, and although nobody can prove it, it seems highly likely that it was this piece. It exudes the same atmosphere as the funeral music and is written in the same key of B minor. In those days, B minor was described as bizarre, listless and melancholy. And Bach used it more often for stately and mournful occasions, such as the aria ‘Erbarme dich’ from the St Matthew Passion, for example.
    The despair is almost tangible in the prelude. Bach comes straight to the point with a melancholy lament, which is followed by great leaps in the pedal, repetitive and stubborn, as if you have to keep reminding yourself of what has happened. The whole piece seems to be filled with deep emotion. The fugue, logically, is more rational, although it is no less ingenious. Bach investigates every possibility of the relatively easy to sing theme. On the way to the end, when the pedal returns after a long absence, he adds a second element - once again with relatively large leaps - and so works towards a hopeful ending.

      Thanks for this interesting piece of historical information. A question and a comment:
      a) I'm surprised that the memorial service for Queen Christiane was held in Leipzig?! I would have expected it to be in Dresden, which was the capital of Saxony (Sachsen) at that time. Or was it just, that the "main ceremony" including the funeral was indeed held in Dresden, and in Leipzig they only had an additional ceremony in honor of their Queen?
      b) You say "Christiane Eberhardine der Starke", this must certainly be wrong? "Der Starke" is the male form of "the strong". First of all, for a Queen they would use the female form, which is "die Starke", and then I don't think they would ever call a queen like this... Her husband August had the nickname "August der Starke", because of two things: 1. he used to "show off" at banquets and receptions by taking an iron horseshoe and bending it until it was straight, and 2. he was notorious for having fathered more than 300 children... (Obviously not all of them with the Queen, but with numerous mistresses...) So calling Christiane "die Starke" would certainly have been considered insulting... :-)

    • @Rik77
      @Rik77 6 лет назад

      @@ulrichschmidt5559 the queen was the Saxon people's queen, who refused to become Catholic. Dresden was the only Catholic part of Saxony, and she was credited with defending Lutheranism after the King converted to Catholicism. This is why although she had a Catholic funeral service in Dresden, she also had memorial service in Leipzig. There's no evidence at all that the Kyrie fugue was performed in Leipzig, unless there's some evidence this is pure fantasy. Though it is a really attractive idea :) The Kyrie is composed in the style typical of Dresden Catholic masses and was probably written for Dresden. A set of parts is in the Dresden archive.

    Every one of the triplet chords in the Sanctus was secure, I have never heard it clearer. I love the timpanist. She pointed the rhythms without swamping the sound, and she avoided anachronistic rolls, leaving final chords to shine. I listened for the Agnus Dei soloist because of the comments, and I say "wow" too. Good idea to take the Dona Nobis Pacem slower than Gratias Agimus Tibi. Perhaps not necessary, but it works.

      uhh, it most certainly is not usually performed by a huge choir. The vast majority of performances I've seen and heard been with choirs of 40 or smaller. I'm doing this right now with 36 singers, the most I ever saw do this was big choirs in the 70s followed by a choir of 55 in recent times. I've never ever heard of or seen a large symphonic choir do this in modern times. Unless your definition of huge is like 35 people.

    • @pannonia77
      @pannonia77 Год назад

      @@alessandrodepoi5868 The German pronuncuation of Latin is what is (and was) the correct pronunciation of Latin in Germany. In my country, Hungary, Latin was the official language till 1844. We had our pronunciation of the Latin, very close to the German pronunciation of Latin (c and g after i and e the same as in German, gn is two distinct consonants. The differences are y in Kyrie is an i, and since in Hungarian e and é - short vs. long - are quite distinct, we often use é where Germans use e, e.g. the digraph ae is a long é even at the end of words.)

    • @alessandrodepoi5868
      @alessandrodepoi5868 Год назад

      Back from school I learned that the pronunciation of latin after the fall of roman empire was the "pronuntiatio ecclesiastica" (with C and G soft before I and E), while the ancient pronunciation was the "pronuntiatio renovata". But the latter was out of use. Since the mass is a catholic roman text, my opinion was that it should follow the first one. But I am not in the detail of philologycal research so that was just my opinion.

    • @pannonia77
      @pannonia77 Год назад +1

      @@alessandrodepoi5868 The "pronuntiatio ecclesiastica" was the pronunciation of Latin in Italy. But all the other languages of Europe had their own pronunciation if Latin. You can see what is the pronunciation of words coming from Latin. E.g. (Julius) Caesar. Originally the C stood for K, that's why the German equivalent is Kaiser. In Italian it is Cesare with the sound "ch", in German (Hungarian, Czech, Polish etc.) it is pronounced as "ts", in English and French as "s".
      The g in "generatio" has the same sound in Italian and English, in French it is the same sound what they write with "j" as in "je t'aime". In German (Hungarian etc.) it is a g (g is always "hard", never "soft".) Gn is in English, German (Hungarian etc.) two sounds g+n (English: magnifying lens), never one sound as in Italian or French.
      Then the French pronounce the "u" as "ü".
      In the Middle Ages these people outside of Italy pronounced Latin in these ways. Indeed, in Hungary, where Latin was the official language till 1844 long after each country used a vernacular as official language the local pronunciation was used, and not even the Catholic Church adopted the "Ecclesiastical Latin" while the Latin was the language of the liturgy till it was replaced by the vernacular after the Second Vatican Council.
      On my channel I have many recordings which do not use "Ecclesiastical Latin". The Hilliard Ensemble's Missa Cum iocunditate recording uses the English pronunciation. The Ensemble Clément Janequin in their recording of Janequin's Missa La Bataille uses a French pronunciation. I recommend you to listen to these pieces, you will see how varied the Latin pronunciation was in Europe before the individual countries adopted the Italianate (aka. Ecclestical) Latin pronunciation. (Which my country never did.)

      @@MattWeisherComposer is it? Do you have source on that? Ecclesiastical Latin was in use at the time and its pronunciation is different.

    6:51 Kyrie ... too fast ... listen to Otto KLEMPERER you kids ... what's the hurry?? BACH isn't a 100 meters race
    ADVICE: listen at .74 speed cause the performance is otherwise too good to miss

    Não se percebe a intensa do cenário de club nocturno… Ao menos um teatro normal. Visualmente é difícil ouvir esta música neste cenário bizarro e agressivo. Tal cenário, só para jazz, com todo o respeito pelo jazz.

    Audio engineering is obviously not the highest art in this video. Soloists are meant to be heard over the instrumental accompaniments. Too bad! A terrific performance, however, if one were to catch it live. Slight lack of discipline among the tacet corps. Folks, you're on TV whether you know it or not. Leave your itches and hair alone - and your water bottles.
