I'm all for completing a game and I got the 999 moons in Odyssey, but I would never subjugate myself to doing this. I've got other games to play, better things to do, a sanity to keep.

Most likely thing that is happening here is Nintendo probably forgot to set a limit on how many moons you can buy from each shop in each kingdoom for what reason i don't know in same fashion I find it strange to call the stars in the mushroom kingdoom moons, little bit more proper programing and it would be easy to spell stars in Mushroom kingdoom and limit the number of mooms you can buy in each kingdoom, but Itsn't uncomon for shops in video games to have suplimentary items such as health in unlimited numbers but power moons thats very unusual none of SM64, SMS, SMG1&2 and SM3DW had unlimited stars you could buy from shop. But I doubt you will get any reward if you just spend 12-24 hours only harvesting coins and buy your way to 999 moons along with skip some terrible jokes moons like the second jump rope callange and/or second volleyball. So to actually get the 999 moons ending you will propably have to beat jump rope.
I would want to do this for you all, but i dont have a switch nir found any good switch emulators for my laptop, though if you found any give me a link

The sail only turns gold when you earned every normal moon
The sail will turn gold if you complete the darker side of the moon
unlimited moon buying only unlocks when you beat Bowser in moon kingdom.
Until then, only one moon can be bought in each shop.

Maybe 99 is the real limit, and not 255. Using a condition it is very possible. If shopmoons > 99, shopmoons = 99. But this can only be speculated on
If you have 880 moons then try to buy the remaining 119 moons from one shop, that can be tested.
I bought all my 119 from the mushroom kingdom, and obtained 999 moons that way
Maybe you could tell whether it goes up to 255 by collecting 744 or less, then buying the rest from one shop.
Eventually, we will find ways to cheese our Moon counter even higher until we evetually reach the true cap.
