The humour doesn’t translate to Americans at all. The thing about this one is that Spastic Hawk is VERY much geared up towards Irish and British humour. Here the word _spastic_ is very much in the public consciousness. The humour is quintessentially Irish and British.
This one wasn't meant to be funny but as social commentary. The Rubberbandits explained in an interview the Spastic Hawk was about how the other hawks all thought themselves better then Spastic Hawk, but in reality they were all in the same cage controlled buy a guy who owned them. Not one of them was free or in a better situation then any of the others.
Spastic Hawk explained: Level 1- It's a basic underdog story of equality and being nice to the little spastics. (Over there, it's a bit more offensive than saying "the retards") Level 2- There's some humor behind the intentional enunciation of Spastic.... Hawk. They're playing with how often they can blur the words and get it past the censors. Level 3- It's an auto-biography, except he isn't telling his story from the perspective of the guy with the hawkery. He grew up AS that hawk. A lot of rap is about how irrevocably cool someone thinks they are, and that resonates with a certain crowd of followers who are enamored by the "confidence" of a delusional narcissist like Kanye West. This is the opposite... where someone with self-esteem issues on many levels acknowledges he's "scrawny and mishapen and not particularly bright and has a hard time doing certain things and isn't pretty and doesn't have any friends or a particularly bright future... but "f" you, I'm gonna fly anyway." Level 4- There's a lot of artistic meta that can be gone in to with how the person illustrated as himself in the book is allowing the hawk to fly, as he, in the video presents a rather vulnerable story to someone that clearly thinks he's an idiot, meanwhile his friend is proud of him no matter what and believes in him... and yes, the book comes off as hot garbage... but his friend is still there for him and believes in him. Musically, it's not catchy, no. But it's a pretty good message.
Haha I just had to do my regular visit to Spastic Hawk and giggle.. But I saw this reaction vid and thought 'Yesssss... Let's take a look!' I got a good laugh
Ah, c’mon now, rewind and watch carefully. Look at the detail of the interactive book. Are you not even a wee bit amused by the book? The frozen mouse? Look at yer man’s “sexy” poses. He learned those from watching music videos. He’s a bit ... um... spastic. Some of us are cruel. We find that funny.
It's not their best work, but one of the problems is that the word "Spastic" has no weight for you. It's pretty offensive. Like your reaction to the c-word... that's like meh, by the time that shows up we're desensitised to it because he's been saying spastic so much. Normally no one trying to give a positive message about ablism and dealing with bullying would use the word spastic. It is a juxtaposition of offence and positive message that gives the song meaning... whether its a good song or not aside.
@@RadagonTheRed I stand by what I said! It's not their best work. I'm not saying it's a pile of shite. Look... do we agree that the lack of impact from the word "spastic" weakened the reaction of a North American viewer?
Agreed that it's not their best work, blindboy has said a number of times they wanted to put out something completely bizarre after horse outside and alienate the plastic fans that came from that song.its not bad but it's maybe slightly too far on the weird got weirds sake scale
Yo man thanks for not forgetting my reaction haha. The song and video is a strange one yes it is just fun and comical. Spastic is also an Irish slang word that means really stupid. If you get a chance could you check out and react to another Irish rapper from Dublin called "Man and The Machine: Kid having kids" he mostly freestyles but he spits some real truth ruclips.net/video/H5O1-Npx8xk/видео.html
