  • In 1965, The Office of Civil Defense created Texas Has a Brand New School in order to highlight the ease with which some school districts were including fallout shelters in newly constructed buildings. Focusing on United High School in Laredo, Texas, the film offered audience a tour of the protected space while explaining the multitude of purposes such space could serve. That same year, civil defense officials trimmed Texas Has a Brand New School from 23 minutes to 6 minutes and re-titled it The Protected School. This condensed version was then screened alongside displays which advocated adding fallout protection into newly constructed buildings.

I graduated from United High in 1973.
Pretty decent 2A school, and you really didn't notice that it was underground.
They did manage to grow some greenery after the movie, grass, shrubs and a few trees.
Vocational education classrooms were above ground, for safety reasons, as they included welding, auto mechanics and the like.

@April Venegas High school then, elementary school down the road was also at least partially underground. As I was only there for my senior year, I don't recall if United Independent School District has a middle or Jr High in those days.

This school is still there..... On del mar and gale. The swiss cheese front i think is gone. But, the way its built kinda into a hill, its solid. United... middle... eighth grade, United has so many students now that, trautman middle is like 4 blocks away... They don't build em like that anymore.🤟✌️🤙

This is a school in Laredo, Texas that I currently attend. It used to be a high school but is now United Middle School. It’s a very nice place and has nearly the exact same layout.
Edit: Seeing all the comments from people who go to, or went to this school just like me is pretty cool.

Strange what architects of the 1960's thought looked "handsome".
