just getting into this aspect of making stuff with PVC. Would a heat gun be powerful enough for a larger chamber like 48"?

How to set your box on fire... Just add a hot gun! I would have preferred to have made the box with tin or other durable heat resistant material.. Hot guns get extremely hot instantly and wood is no match for such heat!
