The Mills Brothers were unbelievable. My Dad used to play that style and we didn’t think it was cool until we were older and my Dad had passed away. “Up The Lazy River” Like Norm said it’s dying art. Loved their vocals…it was like liquid honey. They were a big influence on Dean Martin.
It really warms my heart when I listen to great musicians like Jonathan play. I'm so glad it was the guitar that I decided to pick up nearly sixty years ago and continue to play and love to this day. Thanks and lots of love and respect to Norm for being such an important part of the world of guitar, and music in general, for all these years. 👏❤️👏❤️👏❤️
Wow! If that guitar could only talk (and I’d say it does, in the right hands!) Thanks for a great history lesson on the Mills Bros and the guitar and thanks Jonathon and Ryley for keeping “the Good Stuff” alive!
I love Jonathans playing & the Mills Brothers. So this is so inspiring! And the bassist is incredible. His feel is so great and his hand is really dancing and swinging like an old school pro. I know as a guitar player that you needs the best your musicians in order to play your best. Riley Baker's playin' is killin' 👏
What do you get when you pair such a fine instrument with such an outstanding guitarist? Sheer magic! Thank you, Norm for providing the platform to make this possible.
Norman Brown's tasteful intros for the Mills Brothers records are concise and classic examples of the chord melody style. Who better to demonstrate what this beautiful L5 can do than the great Jonathan Stout, today's premier chord melody specialist? ... Hey, Jonathan -- I caught some Reuss "The Moon is Low" moves on "Between the Devil ..."
I grew up listening to the Mills Brothers, due to them being my mom's favorite group, so I'm really enjoying this upload. I also love George Harrison's take on Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea that he did on his beloved ukulele.
What effects pedals, amplifier and cabinet modeling are used here? This sounds fantastic! Clear, crisp and full bodied sound must come from a synthesizer / emulator. Also can't see the microphone / pickup. ... What? Just a great guitar and player? 😲 That guitar is loud, clean and musical. Thanks all.
To see the original 4 Mills BROTHERS (not father and 3 sons) singing, scating, imitating instruments, etc. all in one song with a TENOR guitar in 1934, check out ruclips.net/video/MtqpyMvI3D4/видео.html
That Jonathan Stout is a treasure. I’d PAY him to demo guitars at my shop anytime. He’s a total pro.
This right here is what Norm's is all about. What a treasure!

Anyone here should definitely look up Jonathan and the Campus Five stuff. It's well worth it!
Yup!
Hey man, thanks Chuck!
My Mom was a huge Mills Brothers' fan, so I have heard that guitar on plenty of records. "I'm gonna buy a paper doll that I can call my own..."
