Great color of your video, A few years ago I lived in Athol MA. and this fall when the trees change color that will make awesome video. And by the way when you calibrate your gimbal make sure you are on a flat level surface.
Hi @@andrewap77 - Though a potential distraction, for the sake of a 'being there' live performance, I narrate during my flights. Voice audio is recorded with a simple Zoom H1 recorder/mic (placed in my shirt pocket, and more recently using a wired mic clipped to my hat). Usually, I record my flight app tablet screen using EZ Screen Recorder (which sometimes shows up in the final videos) and combine the narration, video clips, and text with background music using Cyberlink's Power Director video editing software.
The main Evo flight camera records 4k/60fps to an onboard SD card without displayed telemetry and I download this video data after landing. The *tablet screen* recorder makes a separate 1080p video of the flight app display. This video includes radio-downlinked telemetry and lower-quality camera video during the flight. The screen recording is a separate file that I keep to document the flight and is available to splice into a RUclips video to show technical details (featured in some of my more recent videos). I am told that I can make the displayed telemetry in the flight app screen go away by sweeping my fingers across the screen -- but the one time I tried, it did not happen.
Hi Allen -- Glad to hear that things are working out for you. Yeah, this flight was a good place to try out the zoom. Other than perhaps 2X, the video is crap, but while in the air, it can help identify small and distant features.

Hi A D -- There's a 'gimbal' section in the Explorer app's configuration screen. A full gimbal calibration can only be done on a flat piece of solid and level ground, but on-the-fly tweaking of the roll-axis can be done any time, including in-flight. Accessing this feature, we are shown + and - buttons -- and pressing these, we adjust the camera roll in 0.2 degree increments CW or CCW. Hope this helps.
@@encellon thanks for your quick reply! i live in Argentina and i bought in the USA the mavic zoom fly more combo! gave it as a gift to a business associate, since im planning to go next month to miami, and planning to buy another drone, you think the evo is similar to the mvz? honestly didn't like the geofencing, hated dji software and updates! also picture colors looked very saturated! just use it for fun and take pictures of land and real estate, semi pro!
@@skirikarikuri - I know too little about DJI to compare, but the Evo is a terrific aircraft and camera. The video you see from me is unprocessed, right out of the camera. As a new pilot with very little previous experience, I've enjoyed the learning experience -- and occasional firmware updates (once every few months) have polished and improved the drone. I simply have nothing to complain about. Yet of course, in the end, you must decide.
Hi Dede - More or less north of Cordaville Road, though a bit to the east. When looking at Mill Pond from the Myrtle St. bridges, Banner Hill is across the water to the right about 1/2 km (1/3 mile) in the distance. Ashland Woods Apartments seem like a nice place to live. Not much yet within walking distance -- but that will change with time. Indonesia is a fair distance from Ashland. What is your connection to these places?
Amazingly beautiful video! Did you do any color correction or post-processing? Most of the Evo videos I've seen were a little washed out and nowhere near as vivid as this.
Straight out of the camera -- though it was mid-day on a clear day in the summer, and I also typically set the Evo's EV exposure 1/3 stop darker to avoid washing out highlights -- something I do with all electronic cameras... in fact a habit going back to 35mm slide film. If I were to worry about this bit more, I'd use the Evo's flat 'LOG' function, which can be applied to nicely balance the color in post -- but it makes faded RAW video that *requires* post-processing just to see it properly (and in most lighting conditions, it isn't worth the trouble). With the Evo, there no reason to wind up with washed out video.
Hi Dwayne. My first thought is a recognition that I am biased -- not because I am an Autel aficionado, but because I spent my money, and there is no turning back now. With this at in mind... The Evo is well-built, solid, comparatively quite, easy to fly, easy to maintain, looks great on the ground and in the air. The 4k 60 fps camera is awesome -- not the only reason to buy an Evo, but it tipped the balance for me. As far I am aware, other than professional drones, no one else offers 60 fps at 4k -- and where I am always looking for a sense of 'being there,' it is like viewing the world from a hot-air balloon. Fully-charged flight batteries typically read '~27 minutes' at take-off. But this is a conservative estimate. Actual flight times depend on how I am flying. Hovering uses more power than cruising, and where I plan my missions carefully, I've always had plenty of time to complete my flights. Re-charging times are ~90 minutes, and the batteries are designed to gradually self-discharge if the charge is not used within a few days (to keep them healthy ...and something to keep in mind if I put charged batteries away for a while). Flight batteries also need to cool down for ~15 minutes after a long flight - so the recharge process can be as long as 2 hours. Obstacle avoidance is probably overkill for how I fly -- I am not interested in weaving through trees or between buildings. And like all secondary systems, the power drain of the obstacle avoidance system eats a bit into flight time (no idea how much). But for an added layer of idiot-proofing, I leave it on. Comm range is hard to judge. I haven't flown more than 0.8 miles from my take-off point. I suspect that with a clear line-of-sight without trees the Evo can fly farther than any sane person would try to fly. The Evo has no DJI-style imposed geo-fencing (a huge reason why I avoid DJI), and firmware updates have been ~once a month so far -- not like DJI where 1) mandatory updates are nearly a daily occurrence, 2) DJI won't let you fly an inch off the ground if it flags someone's dirt landing strip 4.9 miles away, and 3) DJI won't let you fly anywhere unless you are current on DJI's firmware updates. The Evo seems impervious to reasonable wind. Rotor blades do no show up in my videos since I keep the horizon near the top of the screen. Yet speaking of the horizon -- you cannot spin like a top without producing a temporary horizon tilt (damps out after few seconds, and is an issue that seems to be going away a bit more with each firmware release). Slow graceful turns are okay. Panning while leaving the horizon entirely out of view hides any sense of tilt (my preferred workaround). Calibrating the gimbal, adjusting tilt when needed, and flying within known limits keeps this problem at bay for me. But it adds to my piloting workload. Also, on the topic of panning -- yawing left or right can be a problem. It feels like the rotor avionics, gimbal, and the camera's internal image stabilizer are allfighting over who gets to control the image stabilization process. In effect, the image sometimes jitters slightly when panning -- especially when flying fast. To avoid this, I have gotten into the habit of slowing down through my turns, or weaving side-to-side to avoid the yaw control altogether. I have tested 'orbit' (flying in a circle) and 'way-point' (flying a defined path). With practice they are very useful, since it lets me concentrate on video compositions. Way-point mode can be set up ahead of time and easily loaded while in the air -- super handy for designing and executing a carefully thought-out flight path. Unless I see a warning about insufficient GPS satellites, Return-to-Home is right on the button. Overall, if you are planing to fly casually while producing awesome 4k 60 fps -- this drone is more than enough. But if you are looking to produce complex camera-motion-driven video -- maybe not enough until camera-pointing issues are entirely resolved (and I have no idea if, when, or how much of this will happen).
HI IM OVER HERE IN CT and I am expecting my EVO today, my question is since the terrain is almost identical I wonder how far out you went and did you have ANY signal problems at all? I have the mavic pro and the new mavic2 and the 3dr solo that I hopped up with mikro tic cards to boost the signal. the BIGGEST reason I bought the evo is the lack of THE GEO FENCING that NEVER EVER fails like the mavic will do AND the constant updates, so maybe ill see ya up in the skies over New england.
I only have problems with the Evo where it makes sense to have problems -- too many trees and buildings. Flying around the pond, trees in our yard are no big deal. But where I try stay within ~400 feet of local terrain elevation (including the tops of cell towers and smoke stacks), at a mile from our backyard I run out of line-of-sight possibilities. Studying Google Earth, I have found places around town where I should have fewer problems -- but I haven't explored those yet.
