Tekken 1 was a fairly substancial graphical upgrade from Virtua Fighter 1, it had fully textured characters and goraud shading to hide polygon wire frame edges.
Then Virtua Fighter 2 came out later that year and completely destroyed it graphically. Good games though.

It was among the first 3D games. Playing Tekken 1 for the PS1 at that time it came out was like playing an arcade quality game back home.

Graphics is not only about polygons, pixels and voxels. It's also about an art direction of the game, and to be honest the last Tekken games that were great in this aspect was Tekken 3 and partially Tekken 4.
