    I got a Armored Warfare ad on this one. :-)

      He's a star. Like Martyn Poliakoff the Chemistry professor, he has a lot of passion, personality, and most importantly, knowledge. A bit of cheeky chemistry for the tank fans: ruclips.net/video/GIoxY9kECRE/видео.html

    Clutch - Throttle - Brake was a common pedal layout in cars and vehicles in the early 20th century.
    Cadillac came up with the modern arrangement in 1916, which we use to this day, but it took a while for everyone to standardize on it. The designers for some interwar and WWII tanks were probably still familiar with the older layout, thus why it showed up from time to time.

    • @clarkmyers8294
      @clarkmyers8294 6 лет назад

      As noted a couple of times the arrangement was once common. I don't see any mention that the arrangement survived for race cars and some highway going race cars including Porsche cars long after highway cars standardized. There is an advantage for heel and toe work to shift non synchro transmissions. Lost art or everybody would remember it.

    I remember being in OSUT for armor (M60A3!) at Ft. Knox in 1982. Being lucky, I volunteered and was sent to the Armor Museum (the ones who didn't volunteer picked up litter all day :) where I spent the day dusting the exhibits. Being allowed to climb on the King Tiger, the Stug, and others was a delight. It was also where I decided I really liked the M8 Greyhound armored car. Not very practial, I admit, but I found it really cool and I've always had a softspot for the 37mm pop gun.
    Someday I'll get to Bovington.

  • @corwinhyatt519
    @corwinhyatt519 6 лет назад +18

    You're not kidding about the Char B1 being more nimble than expected. New engine giving a bit extra oomph (those flames coming out of the exhaust are interesting)?

    • @wuppieigor
      @wuppieigor 6 лет назад +3

      the hot weather caused the backfires and misfires mostly, the fuel in the carburetors weas just evaporating

    • @HoseTheBeast
      @HoseTheBeast 6 лет назад +2

      It’s running a little bit too rich. Too much fuel so it can’t burn all of it in the cylinder. The exhaust manifold sucks the un burnt fuel out and it explodes in the hot exhaust. Probably a very easy tune done with a screw driver on an engine that old. The thing is that burning fuel requires a shit ton of oxygen and there is no more oxygen in the cylinder than what the carburetor lets in.

    • @deepbludreams

      The real deal is a pain in the ass to deal with, those old Maybach motors tend to work based on phases of the moon and how they are feeling about the weather, as a runner, other then the authentic engine noise, you are not losing much, the longer she runs the more people will see her, and that's what history is about right?

  • @Pennijiro
    @Pennijiro 6 лет назад +4

    Just in case you haven't found out on your own yet - I visited Tank Fest first time ever this year and was also taken aback that there were Austrians driving the Patton and the M103 (among a few others). I was lucky to run into them when leaving the premises, and asked them about it. The Patton, as you said correctly, was in service with the Austrian military (until the 90ies?!), so they know how to drive it. And since the M103 has the same transmission (?) / gear box (?) ... whatever (I'm no mechanic in any way) ... anyway because they know how drive the Patton, they know how to drive the M103 as well. Now you tell me if that's actually true. ;-)

  • @haraldw.1369
    @haraldw.1369 6 лет назад +1

    Regarding the Austrians in M103 and M60:
    A team from the Austrian Military Museum around Mr. Brödl (most of them former M60-tankers/lovers in the Austrian Army) found that Bovingtons two M60 were in a sad condition. So they provided Manuals and special tools to Bovington. At the end, however, they had to to England to fix both the M60s, mostly the powerpack. Later they also fixed the M103s engine and drive system, which is similar to the M60´s. So, as a reward The Tank Museum invited them to Tankfest where they drove those tanks, which run perfectly now!

    Lord, that breakdown of the state of (government) public armor collections in the US is depressing. Also something I'm intimately familiar with, considering every time I get a chance to take a vacation, I try to find somewhere with a decent armor museum (there ain't many in the South East, as far as I can tell). I do need to check out the National Infantry Museum though, it's not a horrible drive from me for a weekend trip.
    I've always wondered why there are so many more aviation-centric museums in the US than there are armored ones. NAS Pensacola's museum is a goddamn goldmine, especially if you're into all those weird early jets the USN/USMC used. Most places I've been to that have armor on display maybe have an M60A1 bleaching in the sun out front without any sort of info placard whatsoever, or maybe an M113 or two scattered across the grounds. It's depressing to me that I can drive for a few hours and go see a full-sized Saturn V or one of the actually-returned-from-space Apollo capsules, but I don't know where to go to take a gander at a Sherman around here.

    Suppose the odds are low but I hope you get a chance to do an inside the M60A1/A3 (with the needle nose) episode. Such a beautiful looking tank and I think underappreciated compared to its peers.
    Also it is funny how empty these museums are right before and after major events. The only time I visited Oshkosh was the week before the big air show and there were maybe only 20 people there but they already had most of the historical aircraft rolled out onto the grass field.

    I feel bad about not seeing David Fletcher now I've seen this video, but I never saw this advertised. I saw Squire on Sunday, after accidently stumbling upon the room used for the 'meet and greet' near the end of the day, which was right at the far end of the museum. I arrived luckily just in time, phew! I had asked staff where the 'meet and greet' area was throughout the day, and even staff could not help. Sorry Dave, It's not that we didn't want to see you, but Perhaps bigger signs and more advertising might help. It was fantastic to meet Squire though, and thanks Squire for the autograph and lovely chat :) Also, Thanks Nicholas for highlighting this :) (frame 10.45)

    There was one combat use I am aware of for the M3 CDL. When the Ramagan bridge was captured the Germans tried everything to destroy it including night commando raids down the river. The M3 allowed the 75mm to be operational with the CEO turret on top. One was stationed at the river and blinded the Germans while blasting then with the 75!

Sorry to bother you once more with the subject, but given our current situation here in Brazil nowadays and the overall neglect of our authorities towards such historical things, there's the possibility of we don't have the tank to be shown anymore in the future. IDK if you are aware of the recent news, but one of the most important museums about the Brazillian History in Rio has come to ashes. Almost everything was destroyed. Given the unique background of the Osorio tank, I think it would worth a video.

      The problem is it’s in Brazil. Not some place I can easily get to, much though I may want to.

    What are your thought on the recent Tank Challenge? Meaningful, just for fun, somewhere in between? Thanks for the videos, small chance I'll make it to a Tankfest so these are the next best thing

    I'm planning a trip to the Ft Lee area soon and I was wondering if there are even any tanks there? If not, are there any cool museums to check out. Thanks in advance

      There is a portion of the Aberdeen collection, such as the sole surving M6 Heavy or T1 Light (Cunningham.). I don't know how open they are to the public, though, it has been a few years since I visited.

    I thought the Armor School was at Ft. Knox. Another Army bright idea, I suppose.

      I wouldn't worry too much about it with all the French, Indian and other odd names we have out here we Wyomingites don't get too bent out of shape over out of staters pronunciation. After all we locals are butchering the names in the first place. Dubois is in a very beautiful spot, well worth the trip.
      Edit per news reports from May 2018, the museum is scheduled for late 2019.

    That Sherman during the outtakes, where you forgot to press record, why is there a Dutch flag on it?

    I wish there was at least one surviving M4A6. I'd love to hear what its engine sounds like.
