    ' Marine Biology ' Mr. N. the way to go. As for parental concerns , be that solo sailing or pulling beer in a pub , most parents have some negative thoughts about their ' little boys ' outings.. :) You seem very sure of the path you have chosen for the next few years and all I can say is ' go for it '. From this very ' old salt' I trust you make time to engage with some much ' younger salts ' in your travels. Cheers from Oz.

    Aww! Wow!
    Someone has good taste .. 😄
    Putting off fixing the garden fence and using any excuse I checked out a bit of RUclips and Nestor's Channel.
    Unexpected excitement and happy thoughts when you mentioned the possibility of sailing a Hunter Impala. I had an Impala for several years and myself and friends had endless fun with it. That was 1982 to about 1989 or 1990 .. I forget exactly. The boat is still going along somewhere in Cornwall I think. No. K9542 .... Goosebumps.
    A good boat that responds to proper sail trimming and tweaking. Up here in Scotland our biggest yearly yacht race event is the Scottish Series out of Tarbert, Loch Fyne. The overall winner for 2023 was an Impala sailed by a young owner (like yourself) and team who had resurrected and overhauled the boat themselves.
    All the Scottish and Irish millionaires wondering about money spent on their latest Melges or J Boats. LOLzzzzz
    I think of that now old boat with great affection all the time and just two days ago I found an old photo when cleaning out some boxes from life's hoarding of junk.
    I could never sail in one now. It's a two person boat for cruising although often we managed seven. Excess alcohol cures everything that's cold and wet. (remember it's Scotland and Scots).
    Great stuff Nestor

    Dame Ellen MacArthur sailed around the UK in 1995 at the age of 19. She went through the Caledonian Canal. She went on to do great things in sailing. Her book 'Taking on the world' is a great book.
    You did really well live, not an easy thing to do. Well done.

    Hi, Nestor. If that commenter would buy you a Hallberg-Rassey I’d take it! They’re good boats. We’ll discuss plans for next summer over the winter. Much depends on what my sailing friends/crew want to do and they’re inclined towards racing which would mean no cruise to Nova Scotia or Newfoundland but would still involve thrashing Zanetia around the marks here at the Camden Classic race. Great fun either way actually. You might consider the Maine Maritime Academy here in Castine for uni. They have a marine biology program and you could live on a boat although the winters are harsh there are students who do so. MMA trains you for the maritime industry and you’d be exposed to all opportunities maritime not just marine biology. They have a competitive sailing program as well and the town is lovely and safe. I never even lock my truck and there’s not even a police department here! I will haul Zanetia next week and put her in the hangar for the winter. It’s dipping into the 5 degree C range here at night and the summer is definitely over. We’re still sailing of course but now it’s in wool jerseys! Fair winds and enjoy your racing.
    Rip

      Great, no rush on that, whatever works for you of course. Sounds like a really interesting academy I will look more into it! I hope the haul out went well! Not quite that cold here so still sailing to be done! Thanks

    I know nothing about boats or sailing but really enjoyed your intelligent and thoughtful video sharing your hopes and dreams for the future. I liked the travelogue aspect of your Welsh trip. Do think about sharing your interest in marine biology. Not a stupid idea, now is the time to live your dream. Good luck with all you fo.

    I learned Marine bio in Suva Fiji with USP and University of Auckland NZ. What ever you do - get a look at a tropical marine/ reef ecosystem. Its mind blowing. I did sale part time - but only small craft - started with a Starling.

    I would prefer the sadler too (as obviousely your parents do) for your round-trip, if possible. Very stable and maniable in rough conditions which will probably occur in the north-sea part (always prepare the worst). If you'll preferably crew-up on this trip, i guess it's too early to speak about. Finish school first lol (Peter)

    • @nestorandhisboat
      @nestorandhisboat  4 месяца назад

      Thanks for your advice peter, it is a solid boat its true. I think it will end up being a fairly last minute decision. And in terms of crew, I would like to do a mix of solo sailing and with crew, likely doing North Sea and West coast of scotland with crew for obvious reasons lol

    Your circumnav plan isn’t crazy but would require a sound boat as big as you can afford and lots of planning and safety gear. There’s an MOB gadget that fits in your safety vest and triggers an AIS alarm should you go over but as you say the safety margins are slim when you’re alone even with the best of tech. Cruising around the island with a friend and a new anchorage every night could be just as much fun to plan and execute with a much lower danger factor. You don’t have to look back at much British maritime history for examples of many expert sailors lost to the many dangers of the English coast even in summer. There’s a Norwegian guy on RUclips who single hands a 30-footer across the North Sea. You might watch some of his videos for an idea of the seriousness even as well equipped as his boat is.

    • @nestorandhisboat
      @nestorandhisboat  3 месяца назад

      Thanks for tips Rip, thanks to you and other coffee supporters I have got myself one of those AIS MOB devices. And for my 18th birthday I got a garmin inreach which has a satellite SOS feature. But still much more equipment for the boat; life raft, AIS unit flares etc. Big fan of Erik’s channel, he does have an awesome boat. And yes, I think mostly it would be day trips, and in Scotland in summer there can be up yo 18hours of daylight which would help. Thanks again Rip

    Hey... I missed your live event... where do you announce that? Elsewhere, instead of doing 'boring' work during your gap year, why don't you check out some of the sailing schools that offer long term 'schooling'? The Netherlands has several that are solid. You literally sail around the word for an extended period of time. Just a thought.
