Fishermen had been making this trip for a long time, then Brendan and later the Vikings. Columbus knew this and having read Marco Polo's tales about Japan lying east of China thought Asia was bigger than thought and the land was Japan and other parts of Asia. Columbus believed the Ocean wasn't so vast and could be crossed and He could open a trade route to Asia and the Spice Islands, becoming rich and famous. Spain wanted to take the spice trade away from Portugal. He was right about where land was it just wasn't Asia. So it's all true, the Fisherman, Brendan and the Viking sagas.
