- Montrose : I Got The Fire : Complete Recordings 1973 -1976 : 6CD Box Set
H.N.E Recordings / Cherry Red Records
I will be honest when I saw this arrive on the pre-schedule I did wonder if it would be something I would really want. Even as a mega Ronnie Montrose fan and my previous video describing the first Montrose album and my desert island disc do I really need another copy?
For a band that were slow to having CD releases in recent years we have had, The Original Album Series Box Set, Rock Candy Remasters and the Rhino 2CD versions.
There is nothing in this box that has not been available before so is it aimed at new fans or older fans who had not got any of the others versions? And what about those of us who already have previous versions can we we safely leave this on the shelf?
The fact is for any fan of Montrose this is really an essential purchase and I explain why in the video

The HNE box set reissue of the original Babys albums was a Godsend, at least for me. The first album remaster sounds so much better. Really enjoy Live at the Capitol Theater. Nice review
Thank you for watching - I agree the sound is fabulous. Such a fantastic and underrated band. Phil
The undubbed versions of the first LP are sensational - all on RUclips
They were the first band I ever saw. They supported Quo in Bournemouth in 74

Essential
I wish they could be officially released, I would be first in the queue! Phil
@@NowSpinningMagazine I’d be just in front of you Phil!
Excellent review Phil. straight to the point and without any excess.
Thank you :)
I’m asking for that 1973-76 collection for Xmas!! This band should have been massive. Thanks for the analysis Phil.
Hi Malc, thank you for watching. I agree, they should have been. Phil :)
Great review!
Thank you for watching - Phil :)
The Montrose debut is one of those albums where I don't feel guilty about having multiple copies. Idk why.
Hi Nick, as you can see I am the same! I never tire of it at all. Phil :)
Hi Phil, first time viewer from the States. So called audiophile types tend to rag on the Rock Candy releases in general for being "too loud/compressed", LOL, but I have several and I love them. Of course, I love it loud! Great review, cheers...
Hi KC, thank you for watching and welcome to the Now Spinning Channel! Phil :)
Evening Phil, have to agree i bought the rock candy ones at the beginning of the year so when i heard about this one i thought really, i had missed the rhino one so when i saw that was in it and also the mono & single edits it was wallet time again but i'm glad i did, i enjoy what they are doing with these boxes so much so that when i was ordering on amazon the suggestions led me to the boxes of Rick Derringer, Derringer, Edward Winter & Edgar Winters White Trash again all the albums, b-Sides and single edits, totally worth it in all cases, i only hope this company get round to doing the Johnny Winter albums from that period as well, Take Care and keep up the great work
Hi Ian, thank you for watching. Cherry Red do a fabulous job on these box sets. I have covered the Rick Derringer and Derringer box sets but not the Edgar Winter ones yet. I agree a Johnny Winter would be good as well. Phil :)
The complete recordings is false advertising. They released an album in 1987 called Mean and it’s pretty good too. This is still a great box set don’t get me wrong
It sort of is. It should've said the Warner Brothers Years. If Mean had been in here it would have sold a lot more as that album is almost impossible to find on CD now. Phil

Hi Chris, thank you for watching and sharing another wonderful and varied list ! Phil
nice presentation again Phil I have everything you mentioned but maybe I'll take the dive into this box
Hi Thomas, it does sound very good and it is the best the live broadcasts have sounded. Phil
Tanx Phil, now l must upgrade
Hi Jan, thank you for watching, glad you found the video useful - Phil :)
Was the remastering on the Rhino versions done by Bill Ingot and Dan Hersch? I'm glad that this box was done. I had the Rhino version of the debut, but I wanted the others. Especially Jump on it, because the cover was done by Hipgnosis. It's good that the bonus content from the Rhino versions were included. There actually is a mistake in the booklet. On the Warner Bros Presents, both Alan Fitzgerald and Jim Alcivar are credited with bass
Hi, thank you for watching and for the additional information. The Rhino 2CD remasters was done by Scott Levitin. Phil
This is a great question, because I also wonder if these were all remastered - again. I was assuming that these were the same as the rock Candy reissues, which I do seem to think sound the best so far.
Hi Phil. Good stuff. I was very much in the 'But I already have all of this?' camp. However, your masterful approach to the subject has convinced me that I do need this set after all. On the subject of Montrose collections past and present, do you own the 2000 set 'The Very Best Of Montrose' from Rhino? This is a very good single disc collection and the liner notes are outstanding. For years this was the sole representation of the band in my collection as the albums were hard to source for many years.
Hi Peter, Thank you for watching. I actually did a Patron only video covering ‘The Very Best of Montrose’ to accompany this last week. It is an important compilation as it is the only place you can pick up tracks from the 1987 album ‘Mean’. Phil :)
One my favorites paper money masterpiece.
hi phil, i like (and know ) the 2 first albums after don't know ?§ always black glasses , are you ok ?
Yes - my eye is still healing so I am doing the Jim Morrison / Ian Hunter look at the moment - Phil :)
@@NowSpinningMagazine it's a good look indeed !!!!
Hi Phil, it’s always good to see what’s in the box and hear your views on the contents :)
Any plans to review the GAMMA albums?
Hi Derek, what a great idea. I will do Gamma 1, 2, 3 and 4 and cover how I felt about the albums as were released and look at the Rock Candy Remasters. I think it will work well if I combine them into one video. Phil :)
@@NowSpinningMagazine That’ll be a great show, Phil - I’ll look forward to it!
Phil, Since you made me aware of Montrose I'm interested. Having their 1973 Montrose cd, I was very impressed with them. In my search of Montrose I found their 5 cd set called "Montrose Album Series." Their" I Got Fire " , you have here is a six box set, has their 1973 album included, wonder if you will compare what you know about them. Thank you and look forward to your review.
Hi Jerry, I do mention that 5CD set and compare the sound. Phil
@@NowSpinningMagazine Brilliant ! Thanks Phil...
Phil, I see this on Amazon and it shows the Manufacturer as HNE, is that the box set you have ?
Yes, that’s the one - Phil
@@NowSpinningMagazine Thanks !!!!
There is nothing new here. All of this has been released previously
Thank you for watching, I mention that in the video and then discuss which version I would recommend. Phil
