Thanks for the review of this boxset. It is a great opportunity for new fans to scoop up this era of MTH. I bought the likes of ‘Two Miles From Heaven’ which Dale ‘Buffin’ Griffin was involved in. Discreet overdubbing by Morgan Fisher etc.’Till I’m Gone’ which Mick Ralphs sang, where I hear the musical seeds of ‘Saturday Gigs’. I bought the Live at The BBC CD and that captures MTH in the raw. Buffin had some issues with the production of these albums and endeavoured to address this on Two Miles..’. A friend of mine had a vinyl compilation entitled ‘Rock’n’Roll Queen’, which from their Island Records era. It had a Marilyn Monroe illustration on the front cover.

Simply fantastic so glad you did this. I’m a huge Mott fan and loved this box set and I’ve collected all things Mott including solo of all the members and onward. By the way quick plug for the great Overend watts book on his walking he did before we lost him. Wonderful book he wrote called “the man who hated walking”. Ian Hunter’s first solo was the first album that I ever bought all on me own with no outside prompting and I love it still and all before that to his new great album. This is such a great box. What Hoople did was so ahead of its time. Anyway thanks for the review Phil

It was 1971 when I heard "Thunderbuck Ram" on the Island sampler "Bumpers", immediately I had to have Mad Shadows their 2nd album, soon after I bought their other albums, these 4 Lps were in my first 20 album collection back then and still have an honourable place there today ! I realised then that these albums were something special and have lost none of their magic to this day ! besides my German Island editions I had later also bought the UK and since 2019 also vinyl reissues from the Island label. I just want to show what this band means to me !
I was happy when the albums were released on Angel Air Rec. in 2003, but I was hoping for a box set and happy that this great box was released in 2018, bought it immediately and to be sure at two diff. shops, now I have the box set twice. I was and am thrilled, only the cheap cover art, the first three vinyl albums have gatefold covers, it would have been nice to see these in mini format, but allis great and I'm glad this box is in my collection !
just to name a few favourite songs,
    "Backsliding Fearlessly" (Ian Hunter)
"Rock and Roll Queen" (Mick Ralphs)
    "Half Moon Bay" (Ralphs, Hunter)
    "No Wheels to Ride"
Hunter's singing is so heartfelt on their ballades !
Peter Overend Watts † and "Buffin" Dale Griffin † R.I.P.
Phil, your presentation of this box, thoughts and kind words are the best I've seen on RUclips, well worth the wait, thank you so much and a big Ko-fi for this is on the way ! kind regards from Berlin.

Hi Jogi, it took a while. I think this was because it was important to me. I very rarely film anything more than once and I tried several times with this and scrapped it each time. So after sending a week listening to the CDs I just did in one take. The ballads are very special but there are some real rock moments as well which I appreciate even more now. Once of the best box sets in my collection. Thank you - Phil

Thanks Phil. MTH has never gotten the credit deserves in the states. It took me years to get the Island vinyl releases back in the 70's, could only get the Columbia stuff. Just a great band. Once again greetings from Chicago.

When I was a kid, I really couldn't stand Mott The Hoople, had bought an 8 track , "All The Young Dudes" and pretty much hated it all those years. When that album " Shrunken Heads " came out by Ian Hunter & I heard that song 'Words' I couldn't believe it, and the whole remainder of the album was great too. So I started to look into all the old music he did all the years before that and fell in love with their music. I love every single thing the guy touches now, he's fantastic.

Like most people my ‘real’ introduction was with ‘All The Young Dudes’, but I can remember my older brother having one of those early Island sampler albums ‘Nice Enough To Eat’ which featured a MTH song ‘At The Crossroads’ so I must have unconsciously heard them back in ‘69.
Those early Island Records albums, which I’ve now managed to get on Vinyl, are fantastic, and although showing a band struggling to find an identity everyone of them has an undeniable charm.
This is an essential box set for anyone looking to find out more about one of THE greatest rock bands of all time.

I got this a few years ago ...question is, think song was Midnight Lady?? It was labeled but not actually on the CD, something else was. Has this been fixed??

A great , passionate review as ever, with which i totally concur. However , despite the abundance of extra tracks , there appears to be an omission. On the Angel air release Of Mad Shadows from 2003 there is a Mick Ralphs song.called, It would be a pleasure. Not the most essential track , but it made me wonder if there are still more in the vaults.
