We know both Ashley and mother. They lost the "middle class" lifestyle once Ashleys father divorced her mother. They are both lazy and uneducated and seek out elderly, church folks, and men (mainly older Navy/pilots) to scam. You see, both know what they can gain monetarily through child support with a high ranking military man because Ashleys father was in the Navy and is a commercial pilot. They have been scamming many in a few states.

When it comes to self-defense, the jury must decide whether the fear for life/body was reasonable from the defendant's perspective, which is in part subjective. The goal of the defense in this case is to highlight a pattern of abuse and instability on the part of Doug. If the defense can convince the jury that Doug showed multiple episodes of abuse/instability then it would be more reasonable for the defendant to fear for her life during an argument that turned physical.

We know her and her mother. The murdering of Doug really doesn't surprise us. Shes a manipulative narcissistic sociopath, she NEVER loved Doug, but was using him to gain big child support checks by claiming child abuse, domestic violence and being poisoned. Narcissists love no one but themselves. They also claim the other person is manipulative when its THEM thats manipulative. Ashley knew in 3 days, the results of her psych evaluation would be read in the court hearing. Doug cleared his pysch evaluations. She couldn't let Doug know she was deemed an unfit mother (psychotic), as her and her mother need $$$ to live. So she decided to murder him so that the courts wouldn't give full custody to her husband. Note: Doug was given full medical decisions for his daughter, Emerson. Ashley wasn't allowed to have any input when it came to the child's medical decisions. Ashley needs to pay for her crime with life in a Florida prison! Justice for Eva (Dougs 21 daughter with his first wife) and Emerson. (Although I question if Emerson is his, or the other older Navy/pilot man she was having an affair with while telling Doug they would start fresh in Maryland).

Stand your Ground pros. It's the State's burden to convince the Judge that "stand your ground" defense is not a valid excuse to kill the deceased. In doing so, the State is providing the information, evidence and insight of how the State will prosecute the case during trial. SMART MOVE on the Defense's side to gather that knowledge prior to trial. That will be the best chance ..only a chance...to get a not-gu😢ilty verdict.
Not presenting a defense to stand your ground is another strategy. The Defence Attorney knew they had a slim chance of winning that excuse but he used it to his advantage. I'm going to continue watching Court TV to see how he uses it. Surprise is the best defense. You heard it here first!!!

@@jmgood2870 Doug suffers the same criticism as Eric richins, in why didn't they leave when they realized their wives no longer wanted them in the picture? But the one positive thing in the Doug benefield case that is more promising than the Kouri richins prior poisonings hearsay, is that Ashley Benefield's strategy was to separate from Doug legally, by abusing the legal system, by accusing doug of attempted murder, spousal abuse, child abuse and child sexual abuse, attempted child murder.
The same judge that destroyed Ashley's legal maneuvers and admonished and belittled her approach to the child custody case, only 3 days before the day of the murder, was about to amend Doug's parental custody rights, 3 days after he was murdered. It put pressure on Ashley not to let the custody judge rule favourably in Doug's favor. The custody judge's recorded opinion of the ruling was allowed into evidence, Doug's lawyer spelled out the legal ramifications and worst of all, Ashley's tactics were hilariously described by the judge in that admonishment. Stick a fork in her, she's done.
