      True, and also Virgil's cure worked because he designed his FEV strain to be cured.
      Which is why other cure attempts were fatal.

      @brianschultz962 ...
      The reason they are sterile is because FEV sees sperm/eggs as 'flawed' so it corrects them, so if the cure reverses the changes men at least would be fertile, and probably women as well.

      @@mlmii1933 At least in Fallout 3's FEV strain, its stated in the Vault that it makes the sexual dimorphism recede to the point males and females are indistinguishable.
      Now we know the same is not true for the Master's staring as there is Tabitha and Lilly in Fallout New Vegas who not only have more feminine voices (compared to other mutants) but also wear feminine accessories; IE Lilly's wide brim sun hat and Tabitha's sunglasses and wig.
      So maybe different strains have different levels of reversibility?

    • @RandallFrequentFlyerFlagg
      @RandallFrequentFlyerFlagg 10 месяцев назад +11

      I don’t think Dr. Vigil injected himself with garden variety FEV. He must have developed a special type that didn’t affect his mind and could be reversed. Virgil retained his memories, personality and intelligence. This is completely unlike every other Institute super mutant who lose their minds after conversion. Dr. Virgil must have used some special type of FEV or used a different exposure procedure that left him in a state that his mind was unaffected and the mutation could be reversed.

    One thing I never understood is what was special about Richard Gray (as a former Vault Dweller) that made him transform into The Master instead of just another generic Super Mutant, and why no other dipped human since underwent a similar transformation.

    • @without_atrace
      @without_atrace 10 месяцев назад +67

      It must have just been the exposure method. Some folks exposed, like Harold (in the same expedition as Richard) turn into wildly different mutants than Super Mutants or even a Ghoul. Centaurs are the result of Humans, Dogs and other animals being simultaneously thrown into the vats.
      The way I interpreted Richard's unique mutation was due to him being knocked unconscious and falling into a vat, as told by his diaries and Harold, and rather than being dipped and removed like most Supers he just laid there for god knows how long, eventually mutating into a fleshy blobman, which then went on to assimilate itself into the computer systems underneath the Church.

      Hypothetically, yes, to both Chernobyl, Nagasaki and Hiroshima, but it's unlikely the topic will get expanded soon. It would be extremely cool to read through a paragraph of a rotten away medical journal explaining the Pre-War known effects of Ghoulification, but it would remove a bit of the post-apocalyptic magic from Fallout. We know that FO scientist knew of radiation effects on human beings, enough to develop sperimental treatment to become Ghouls, Eddie Winter, and radiation based drugs to become Ghouls, like with Hancock. Pre-War they knew what made Ghoul ticking, and had decades worth of time to study and replicate it. Yet we don't know how spread the knowledge was, given how little apocalypse survivors know of the condition, one could say only military men were aware before the Great War began.

    I think Harold is one case of "Ghoul" that is explicit stated he was infected with FEV before his transformation. To quote Tim Cain "Harold is special" (and so was Master, since he was infected by same batch). He isn't really a Ghoul, nor Super Mutant, but something fairly unique (aren't all "natural" mutants really unique?).
    Rest of (well known) Ghouls came from radiation (or did they!?).
    I wouldn't dismiss possibility of some Ghouls being like Harold, but obviously main cause is radiation.

    • @FezMooseLive
      @FezMooseLive 10 месяцев назад

      Harold is a very special case.
      Blud is legit growing a tree out of his head. He and the tree evolved to exist together.
      Ghouls are just rotting due to radiation exposure.
      Harold's exposure to FEV could explain why he lasts so long though. It could explain why he isn't feral.
      The master was also submerged in FEV for a brief period of unknown time. The FEV had enough time to mess his DNA up. Leaving him a goopy pile of mess. Who can asorb creatures minds.....

      I always assumed he was infected by fev and during his time unconscious some plant matter was forced into his body
      Either that or he had a fruit seed in his stomach that hadn’t been damaged by the acids yet
      Then, when the fev started changing him it took the plant matter and blended them together like dogs/humans becoming centaurs

    Dr lesco did not "attempt" to shrink the any sizes. He succeeded. Look at fallout nv and fallout 4 the ants in those games are smaller than the previous games. Nv was smaller than 3 and 4 had any swarms in the nukaworld dlc where the ants were significantly smaller and both games took place after fallout 3 and lesco's experiments.

    • @Skiritai
      @Skiritai 10 месяцев назад +2

      It would have taken many, many years for the serum to make it's way from DC to Vegas. So I think it could just be an example of predatory differences for the Mojave, but for Fallout 4, it's more plausible.

    • @ruthlesace
      @ruthlesace 10 месяцев назад

      @brianschultz962 there are fire and in the Mojave and those did not exist before fallout 3. They only exist because of lesco. Therefore the genetics could very well have made there easy to the Mojave without issue.

    • @ruthlesace
      @ruthlesace 10 месяцев назад +1

      @FezMooseLive no, in fallout 3 Dr lesco tried to shrink the giant ant size back to pre apocalypse Era. He introduced a fast acting mutagen that allowed them to breathe fire on accident. Before he did that the fire breathing ants DID NOT exist. However in fallout new vegas which happened severance years after fallout 3 you can find fire breathing ants, and normal giant ants. Both of which are smaller in model size than they were in any previous fallout title. This implies that lesco was at least partially successful and that his mutated ants made it ask the way to the Mojave desert.

    I think it's a bit silly for that forum theorist to suggest it's bad writing for the FEV to be "responsible for all the weird and wild things in the wasteland". There are certain levels of suspension of disbelief in sci-fi, and having rogue and quickly mutating strains (especially ones that jump species) makes it a lot easier to make sense of what's happening lore-wise instead of accepting on faith that radiation isn't universally highly biologically destructive. Dirty weapons that spread both radiation and bio-contamination fallout (especially if multiple powers are working on them at the same time), and bio-engineered defenses against them are perfectly believable last-resort tools when total mutual annihilation is the expected outcome. If anything, the idea of a perfect cure is more difficult to accept conceptually than a potential less-mutagenic environmental strain that results in ghoulification of citizens, because you'd want your own people to survive and cope with whatever's coming, even though it's already quite deeply meddled with the natural balance of evolution and survivability.
    Maybe there's a better way to write all around it, but I just don't think it's lazy writing or theorizing to try and think of a consistent in-universe explanation for why Ghouls and critters aren't walking tumors

    On ghouls, it's correct it's not the fev, but it seems it's not just radiation either. Ghouls don't seem to be just altered humans but some seem to have died and been resurrected.
    The ghouls in fallout four that were the neighbors who didn't get in the vault would have been killed by the blast, for example.
    I think there's still a possibility a version of the fev was out there pre war or was released during the fallout.
    With the way this series changes things every game the canon is loose.

      Real quick, in real life a human wouldn't live if they were exposed to that much radiation.
      Now with that in mind, fallout is a game that messes with the rules of existence. So its understandable that the neighbors lived. They were behind a hill (which the flash wouldnt have reached.) And I'm sure once they heard the boom and the loud ass wind they knew and just ducked. I know they could have survived because Sanctuary is mostly in tact, and codsworth lives with major malfunctions.
      😂 and ghouls aren't resurrected, they get healed. Glowing ones are so radiated that they can heal feral ghouls. Blessed be the Atom I guess.

      On top of that there's the inconsistency with aging.
      Sadly, the truth of the matter is the people who make these games don't care as much as the people who play them. The lore of fallout is an inconsistent joke. It's basically just a bunch of memes and tropes thrown together with radiation and fev as the glue holding them together.

      Me and my friend have made a head cannon that the ghouls that glowing ones bring back never died. Feral ghouls are simply radiated humans, capable of surviving A LOT of damage. So perhaps they are in the processes of dying slowly but the glowing ones radiation boost heals them.

    I 100% agree that all lore points to the fact that the vast majority of Ghouls are made by radiation, but it's a bit misleading to say that FEV *can't" make Ghouls, since that's the explanation for Harold being the way he is. Granted he's clearly got a bit more going on than the average Ghoul, but Chris Avelonne himself has made it clear that he should still be considered a Ghoul

    • @DavidTorpid

      My issue with the radiation answer is that it doesn't account for the random nature of forced change through radiation basically making a ghoul once that way makes some sense, but for people to consistently mutate in the same way over a huge area means that there must be some other contributing factor aside from radiation.
