  • From it's beginnings as a legitimately cutting-edge public transportation concept to be used in Walt Disney's early designs for EPCOT, the PeopleMover is now a legendary Disneyland ride that many call to be reinstalled. Why did this classic ride close down? And why on earth did Disney decide to replace it with one of their most public and well-known failed attractions...Rocket Rods?

How do you feel about the closure of Disneyland's PeopleMover? Did you get a chance to ride Rocket Rods before it closed?

I rode Rocket Rods in the spring of '99 and I enjoyed it. I didn't have much experience with rollercoasters and thrill rides, so I didn't mind the slowdowns for turns. I went with my family that year and it was my dad's favorite ride. ❤️

I rode the Rocket Rods back in 1999. I remember waiting in line for a long time for that ride. I also remember it broke down a lot while we waited in line. I went back to Disneyland in 2022 and the track for the Rocket Rods was still there.

I personally think that Disney should tear it down; it's a bitter reminder of what could've been, and what never was in the first place.

I loved the original people mover, i wish they would bring it back. It was nice because you could just sit and take a break while riding a ride that took you around the park. Rocket Rods was ok but it broke down all the time. I still love that the magic kingdom has the TTA to ride.

I rode both the People Mover & the Rocket Rods. The People Mover was nice & relaxing but the Rocket Rods were much more exciting & it was really cool seeing them zoom all over Tomorrowland. It's sad to see that track still empty over two decades later. I really hope Disney finally installs a new ride on that track the next time Tomorrowland gets redesigned.

I rode on the People Mover and Rocket Rods, it was an interesting track going through all the different attractions. Both were unique and I miss them😞

I never got the chance to ride the peoplemover but after seeing videos of the ride i think it would be more practical to have 2 stations or more so the peoplemover would move you somewhere instead of nowhere. As i understand it was intended as transportation system of the future so why not let it be what it should be a real transportation system with panoramic vue of this magnificent site.

When I was a child back in the early 90s I remember going on the People Mover when they had the Tron version and that was pretty cool. I was also there during rocket rods and I remember getting stuck on that all the time we were on it. I remember the line being over an hour long just to get in. It was cool going through the line because they use the Circle Theatre as a line Q. I like that because it kind of made you feel like you're racing around cities and tracks. You also got to see models of the People Mover while you're in line.

At Disneyland in Anaheim, CA, after the completion of Star Wars Land in 2019, the rides to stay in Tomorrowland are the Original Space Mountain, Submarine Voyage, Monorail, Matterhorn, Autopia & Astro Orbitor. They could bulldoze over most of the areas in Tomorrowland between eliminating the observatron from the pylon & the old and unused Rocket Rod / PeopleMover tracks (that has been standing but not operating since Tuesday, September 26, 2000). In the same above ground platform as opposed to the Old PeopleMover with motorized tracks (1967-1995) & Rocket Rods (1998-2000), because of the people with wheelchairs and mobility scooters, instead of the a new ride with motorized tracks, we all know it could be the New PeopleMover without motorized tracks, it could be the Heathrow Pod Tour, it could be iMover, it could be the Boxcar Tour or it could be a new ride with normal speed that is more comfortable than ever before.

Rocket rods! That was one of the most fun rides at Disneyland. My parents still have pictures of us broken down on that ride And remembered the day they took the cars of the tracks sad day in my Disney history.

I rode the Peoplemover when I was about 3 years old and the Tron tunnel scared me so shitless that I never wanted to ride it again. I had plenty of opportunities to ride Rocket Rods but didn't because even as a kid I knew it was a bad idea to run them on those tracks. I genuinely thought the track would collapse at any moment and I'd die riding them. In hindsight I really really regret this.

I have ridden both PeopleMovers numerous times and definitely liked the DL one better. I didn't ride Rocket Rods and it doesn't look like I missed much anyway.
It was such a huge mistake to close the PeopleMover in the first place.

I’ve never thought of Matterhorn being in Tomorrowland, it’s just kind of on its own in my mind. I’m okay not making sense on that lol.
It bugs me that Tomorrowland has always been under realized, as it seems to have been so important to Walt.

I think they they should enact a more modern version of Peoplemover that represents the mass transit people are calling for in the era of using less gasoline and going to electric trolley lines.

I think people mover must return along with the skyway. I stood in line for rocket rods for 3 hours. Rode it once. Never rode it again. Listen, when you have magic mountain not too far away, rocket rods under delivered in the thrill department obviously. It wasn’t even that fast.

At Disneyland, Disney should demolish most of Tomorrowland:
Autopia (boring, replaced by Cars in DCA)
    Submarine Voyage (boring)
    Carousel of Progress/Innoventions
    PeopleMover track
    Also, untangle the monorail.
In that space: Dig deep, and build a giant show building underground. (Including support space, which frees up more above-ground real estate for more attractions, eateries, retail.)
Above are the eateries, gift shops, maybe the Iron Man ride from Hong Kong. (Or Body Wars 2.0 with Ant-Man and Wasp, swiping Fantastic Voyage's plot.) And the TRON roller coaster.
Brand it as Marvel's SHIELD west coast facility, similar to the FBI tour in DC.
Attendees are taken on a tour, shown demonstrations (similar to Universal's movie magic attraction), and then, accidentally on purpose, the riders gets exposed to Terrigen mist, and attendees can then be tested to discover what new powers they have.
The show building is a big warehouse underground, easily updated with new attractions, technologies, and IP.
