      I don't think it's a work truck yet. Making the big battery available is a good start and deleting all the techno-geegaws is also good, but a work truck needs a shorter cab and longer bed. A standard short box of 6.5' is a minimum for work so you have room for a contractor's canopy if not a service body. As a tradesman I'm in the market but that's a hard one to get past...aside from the other EV issues of range/charging time, especially when towing.

    Been telling people that between the F-150 Lighting and the eTransit, Ford is going to revolutionize the commercial EV market. With the two models, it's now more efficient for companies to switch over to EV's, particularly in big cities, where range isn't really an issue because they won't be driving more than 100-150 miles a day while doing jobs/deliveries, and the vehicles can charge back up at company-owned charging stations overnight every night.
    It's also hugely beneficial because it allows for better fleet management and reduces cost. With these EVs, it cuts down on maintenance costs because there's no engine to service (so, no oil changes and fewer mechanical breakdowns), no fuel cards to hand out or added fuel costs to manage, eliminates fuel costs and wasted gas from engine idle time while doing deliveries, and also if enough companies get onboard, it could significantly reduce emissions. Particularly in cities like Los Angeles that have an air pollution problem.
    I think the only thing Ford needs to do is build up their charging network by striking deals with large grocery chains like Walmart, Target, Kroger, Albertson's, Walgreens, 7-Eleven, and so on, and get them to create designated areas (preferably in front of the stores) that allow people to charge up while they shop/run errands. They also should heavily invest in getting companies to adopt their charging system at their company facilities. If they can do that, they can win the EV market.

    • @plmn93
      @plmn93 2 года назад +5

      The biggest issue is battery lifespan. All that saved maintenance does no good if, like Tesla, you have to spend upwards of $20k to replace the battery after 7-8 years.

    • @nmtay
      @nmtay 2 года назад

      I think that's a valid concern... particularly, the amount of charge/discharge cycles a battery can handle. But, if you can get 5-8 years out of a battery, when the average lifespan of a fleet vehicle is about 5-10 years, I think it's worth the trade-off. Especially if you're saving in other maintenance costs over the course of that time.
      Combine that with government tax credits and incentives for using electric vehicles, I think it'd be worth it.

    • @ssu7653
      @ssu7653 2 года назад +1

      To be fair, the only thing Ford need to do is produce enough of these. If you cant get your hands on the truck, why would you build up charging stations for a fleet of them?

      Don't forget that in the real world towing is a critical part of why you buy a truck (otherwise why not get a car?). And that will cut range by approximately 50%, so 100-150 miles then you need to hope there's a charge point (that works, isn't taken, and can accommodate a trailer) and spend an hour or two charging. THAT is a big problem for travel...exactly when somebody is likely be towing (vacation, etc) anyway. Having decided to offer the larger battery on the Pro is a start at least but not quite enough I fear.

      I'm a tradesman myself and would love to ditch my 13 mpg NV2500 for an EV - could save me 15-20K a year in fuel. BUT - it also has to do the same jobs as my van which means a minimum of 250 miles a day range (and for those no in the trades we don't take hour-plus 5-star lunches, so before somebody even says it no, we can't just 'charge at lunch' unless they install wireless charging in drive-thus) AND the ability to tow 9000 lbs on 1000+ mile road trips in the mountains. The other key is a minimum of a standard 6.5' bed to fit a contractor's style canopy if not a service body. Adding the option for the bigger battery at least gets us into the usable daily range but still won't manage towing very well, and the lack of a short cab (at least an extended cab)/long box still makes it more a family hauler than a work truck IMHO. As an aside, for my use the in-bed power isn't of any value. Sure I have an auxiliary battery and inverter in the back of my van but all I do is charge my cordless tools with it. Doesn't need much power at all and honestly it's easy/cheap to install. I'd probably never use it and certainly wouldn't pay extra for it. I do know a lot of people seem excited by that option though.
