Kanigoro 2 on mud trains, East Java, Indonesia

Mud trains at every sugar mill in Java were the preserve of the smaller locomotives. At Kanigoro this traditionally meant Vulcan 0-6-0T 5 and Borsig 0-6-0T 1. For some years small OK 0-8-0T 2 was also a regular choice and this compilation shows it at work through the 1990s.

Yes, but sometimes farmers would want it as low grade fertiliser and in the old days, when dried it was used as a low grade fuel for cooking. If left out, it would become covered in an edible orange coloured fungus.
