    The Solar Observer is a perfect daily listener radio. Excellent audio. Great reception and the standard crank, solar panel, battery pack, flashlight and 3 AA battery option make it the best of the pack. I've owned one for a few months. I'm very impressed!

    Thanks for this review, very good comparison. well thought out and good description of features. I use a grounded am Radio Extension antenna, and use a separate FM radio Range extension to really extend my portable radios range in both AM & FM. I have the Sangean MMR-88 and the Sangean PR-D4W Radios, But I like the features of the Kaito Voyager 500. Looking at the replacement battery pack, It is a 3.6volt battery. So a connector like the one on the rechargeable battery for the Voyager soldered to a battery holder for a 18650 at 3.7 volt, could work, take the back cover off, plug in the battery holder, a small notch in the cover for the wire to exit, then put the cover back on and several pre-charged 18650's could take you a little ways into the future, if you run out of those then the double AA batteries. A separate solar panel large enough to charge a 18650 or maybe several at a time may be a good investment.

    I just bought and received my Sangean MMR-88 emergency radio today and I was kicking myself for not thinking of searching reviews on RUclips first- so I am very happy to see your great reviews for it 😃 I was impressed right away by its high quality tough construction- it is obviously a fine piece of equipment. I am ordering back up batteries for it this week. I really enjoy your channel and I subscribed to it. You have provided really useful information here and you are well spoken and easy to listen to. I was looking at a DIY on how to build a dynamo out of a 12 volt battery powered Drill, using the Drills geared dc motor as the dynamo, that would be nice to build one and put it in the shop for when i may need it, I have a few old 12v dc drills that the batteries gave up. testing its output occasionally and maybe clean and lube. I probably wouldn't spend the time making this part, But Hooked to Bicycle pedals would be nice and geared to provide max power and ease of pedaling, that would be for a prolonged event.

    I received a Kaito 500A for Christmas. I was disappointed in the SW reception, The muted tuning, a small and vague tuning knob and overall cheap feel (compared with other SW portables) were not worth the price to me and I returned it. Maybe next Christmas, the Sangean? Good review however!

    Love the video! Great job! Do you feel short wave and weather alert is necessary in a emergency radio? Reason Im asking is the CCrane looks like its well built, along with the Sangean, but the CCrane does not have the weather alert option or the short wave like the Kaito does. The Sangean does not have the short wave option and no option for extra batteries as well. Since I only want to purchase 1 radio, is their a radio that you would recommend that would do it all regardless of the $50 price cap?

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  5 лет назад

      A very cool option is the C.Crane CC Radio 2E. It runs on batteries, no solar or dynamo. Just keep fresh batteries on hand at all times. I like that radio because it has Weather Alert plus an informative 2m HAM band that you can listen to storm spotters and disaster relief. You do not need SW in a weather emergency. If you want a radio that is good for off the grid use then one of the Kaito radios would get my vote. Probably the KA500.

    • @todderbert

They all sound fantastic. If I had to choose between those three I would pick the Solar Observer for it's speaker, though the KA340 is rather punchy :) and the Sangean for it's phenomenal headphone quality(+stereo)

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  5 лет назад +2

      Digital is easy to read and is usually dead accurate. The newer analog styled tuners actually use a DSP chip inside, so its a digital radio with an analog scale. They can be accurate and sometimes not.

    Regarding the charge Input Port on the side of MMR-88, I wonder if you could make up a wired battery holder for a single 18650 battery, with the correct connector into that socket into the charge port, on the side of the MMR-88 to charge the internal battery, as a backup.

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  6 лет назад

      I could easily do this mod but, most people probably wouldn't. The voltages are the same, you just have a longer charging time due to its extra capacity.

    • @garywest3763
      @garywest3763 6 лет назад

      I was thinking using the pre-charged 18650, to charge the in Internal battery, or if plugged into the charge port would it run until the 18650 was run down completely, It would be a way to use Larger capacity batteries that you may have for other radios, and be able to use on the MMR-88, or maybe the C crane Solar Observer with a change-able Connection/connector or secondary Battery holder made up for Charging the C Crane Solar Observer with a 18650. I see amazon has the Wired Battery holders for the 18650 for dirt cheap 10 for $10.00 I think i saw

    • @garywest3763
      @garywest3763 6 лет назад

      If charging a 18650 battery 3.7volts, or maybe a few of them charging in parallel, at the same time, a small, But Large enough to charge as quickly as Possible solar panel dedicated to battery replenishment probably would be a good way to go.

    • @garywest3763
      @garywest3763 6 лет назад

      this is a very simple mod

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  6 лет назад

      Very simple, but I was thinking of it in reverse. Using the terminals from the battery compartment and running an external hookup. That way you could charge and use an 18650 with the Sangean's Solar/Dynamo. Then you could also use your dedicated solar panel to charge extra 18650s. That would be choice...the wheels are turning...I would like to do this mod now, but I have alot on my plate atm..if you do it I would like you to send me an email with your pictures. Would be interesting to see.

      @@todderbert Now that it comes to mind, I’ve been thinking about buying the Sangean MMR-88 for my kitchen to replace my Eton FR-370. The reasons being are not only because of the build quality and its features, but also for its sound quality and reception on all 3 bands. And if I buy the MMR-88, I’m thinking about getting a Demonfire 1200 mAh 18350 battery to replace the default one you get with the radio so that it’ll last longer.

      The one I know of is the Skywave SSB with its weather band alert. It doesn't have a solar panel or dynamo and is rather expensive..but its portable and has good run time on two AA batteries.

      I have one Fantastic little radio ‼️ C.Crane worked a long time developing it. And , they did it right.
      SSB is very good.
      Also the Air band.
      Their quality control is excellent, but the price is a bit expensive. Well worth it, though.

    Why would need to change the batteries if it has a solar charger on it?

    • @todderbert

      If and when the rechargeable battery fails you have the ability to place backup batteries in.

    These so-called emergency radios are toys. With the
    ridiculous cranks, solar cells, sirens and lights all of which are
    almost useless . With all the junk they put in them theres no room for a
    good size set of batteries like D-cells which gives you hundreds of
    hours of operation instead of multiple ineffective options. The cranks
    break off and dont give you any real recharge time (your going to crank
    while driving or boarding up your house??) The solar cells wont run the
    radio and take hours to recharge tiny batteries. The multiple power
    options (a selling gimac) are what make these radios almost worthless.
    If they didnt do that you could fit 3 D-cells which will power a radio
    with no digital displays for 250 hours. You also dont want digital
    displays or flashlights draining your small batteries even when the
    radio is off. You want a slide rule dial AM,FM, WB , 3 D cells, slide
    rule dial, big speaker , detachable ac cord and long telescoping antenna
    (the fad junkers have short ones) The Kaito KA-390 , Retekess TR-640
    and Prunus J-05 are far better for emergency use than these junky fad
    so-called emergency radios. There just a bunch of useless features to
    make you think "YOUR PREPARED" It like a swiss army knife with a bunch
    of useless blades.
