What makes this worse (or perhaps better) is that throughout the first part of World of Goo you can find messages from this distant character called MOM, and they're very warm, concerned sentiments like "Be good" or "Be careful" or "Are you coming home?" It helps you keep going even as the setting gradually becomes bleaker and drearier, this idea that somebody out there is looking out for you.
And then you finally meet her, and... 'she' turns out to be just a spambot. That's where the hollowness Marco identifies comes from. World of Goo is... not a lighthearted story.
The other game from the same devs and music from the same artist is just as bleak as well "Little Inferno" is the name!
Also when you get back to the "MOM's Computer" level after beating the world and click on MOM you get a popup window saying "MOM has gone away."
And if you venture high up above the icon, you find a secret sign saying:
"Hi MOM"
"Are you there?"
"..."
"..."
"..."
@@ravick6940 that to me was the biggest hit in the gut cause even being a spambot MOM does care and wants to help but after what happened with the corporation and the message that is left on the screen implies her attempt at helping came at a cost. And even The Sign Painter figured it out.
necro-ing this comment, IIRC world of goo takes place during/after little inferno's timeline, which is also a very, very bleak game.
The World of Goo OST has no right to be that beautiful and emotion-inducing. It's a puzzle game with balls of goo! Why am I tearing up?
Seriously, why do you care so much?! Just be grateful
because its lore is kinda dark
Cause they take time on their masterpieces
World of goo is such a classic game, man and it has a great ost too
And now a sequel is coming out
This is a historically significant game to the indie scene IMO. It was one of the first indies that truly blew up and showed that indies could be just as amazing, popular and profitable as triple A games. The OST really is something spectacular.
That’s exactly my opinion too. Ive played games my my entire life. This is a very valued one. There is just something about it that is so unique. It brought great attention to the idea of an indie studio and games in general. I remember hearing about it from one of my old friends. Buying it an hour later.
World of goo 2 announced. Hope it holds a secret emotional story that you wouldn’t actually expect like the original. The only person caring about you in a desolate world, no other people, turns out to be just a chat bot.
Man, World of Goo was a big part of my childhood. If you plan on listening to more, I'd recommend "Tumbler" "Screamer" and "The Last of the Goo Balls and the Telescope Operator".
Burning man is also super good
Jelly is great
The ost in the final level cutscene in second world is great too
Best of times, bro….
@@i713av i know that now but i didn't know the name when i posted this reply
World of Goo eats, sleeps, and breathes Melancholy. It just frames the wistfulness with a heaping helping of absurdity and a thoroughly-late-2000's art style that wouldn't look out of place on posters sold at Hot Topic.
I've never heard this song before today but man it hit me.
I instantly had this mental image of a mother at an open kitchen window looking out into a yard as the sun was setting - the choral melody like she was humming to distract herself from her missing child to not panic. Then as it kept building and building it was like she was starting to keen and starting to crack from anxiety - but then she catches herself spiraling so it calms down again as she makes herself relax. Then the drumbeat kicked in and I saw her pacing, the drumbeat echoing her footsteps on the tiled kitchen floor as it grows again and her fear bubbles back up, until the noise at the end stops her in her tracks - is it the door opening? Is her child home?
That was one of the most intense visual reactions I've ever had to a song. Oh my goodness.
The funny thing is that MOM is actually just massive super computer who wants your personal data.
Interesting perspective!
The developer of this game loves to make whacky funny games, that are supported by fantasticly emotional ost's to really deliver some amazing story.
As such I recommend the Little Inferno OST, specifically 'Reporting from the weather balloon' perhaps then followed by 'Over the Smokestacks, Over the City', made by the same people
Totally agree with this. I feel like Little Inferno would be even better experienced in the context of the game, particularly given it’s so short and chill.
Little inferno truly is one of the most games ever
yesss
I highly recommend the ENTIRE OST for this game, every single track is amazing. Please, if you do any other track from this game do 'Best of Times' its so great :)
2:10 Go away, microphone! Me and my beard need to be alone for a bit.
Honestly though, this little indie puzzle game has no right to go as hard as it does on the soundtrack, but it do. I'm happy to see someone enjoy a piece of it for just a bit longer!
Hold on how is this comment 2 months old...
@@atharvawalinjkar672 The magic of Patreon most likely

This game... I played it when I was around 5 yers old. And even tho I couldn't complete it without my mom's help, this game will be my personal №1 in my heart. Such emotions, such nostalgia... I'm not crying! You are crying!
(P.S. We need more World of Goo ost!)
I remember when movies had soundtracks that sounded like the ones in this game.
….i still remember playing this game on my Wii. The music didn’t have to be this incredible, but here we are….
Keep listening to the rest, it’s a phenomenal OST!!
this ost is one of the most serene pieces of music ive heard in a while my god
I just love that look at 0:17 realizing that it was in fact going to make him emotional
This game is SHOCKINGLY emotional, I was not ready when I played it years ago
I am so happy this video exists, finnaly a semi-recent and popular World of Goo video!
It used to be on the public "EDUCATIONAL" computers they had at the public library for the kids. But just becuse it's a physics simulation DOSEN'T mean it's educational, and is definetly a more mature game, Besides I could never get past chapter 1 because of the 15 minute time limit which was hilarous
Wow! I thought this game was largely forgotten. One of my favorite OSTs for sure, incredibly emotive tracks, yet also ambient, like it's soundtracking the inside of your heart.
If our dear content creator felt like exploring more of the songs, I'd recommend... well, most of it really, but the ones I think would be most fun to react to are Tumbler, Jelly, Rain Rain Windy Windy, Brave Adventures, Regurgitation Pumping Station, Years of Work, Ode to the Bridge Builder (specifically after having heard Brave Adventures), and either World of Goo Beginning, World of Goo Ending Theme, or both.
Last but certainly not least, there is Best of Times, which is probably the pinnacle of the soundtrack and should be treated as such. If you're reading this Marco, don't sleep on that one if nothing else. Hits different after hearing more of the soundtrack beforehand though, it could be a fun miniseries!
i can't hit like on this comment a second time, but i would really like to wholeheartedly endorse marco taking a look at the rest of world of goo's ost. kyle gabler really knows what he's doing in terms of creating a specific Feeling like this. would recommend little inferno's ost as well
@@desertpacificoctopi810 and all accomplished on a shoestring indie budget. Many of the drums that hit so well in the tracks were made by hitting a cardboard box, I've heard.
we need to hear the rest of this music with you!
World of Goo has one of the most underrated soundtracks in the history of video games
Literally his soundtrack IS so much good, IS so good as gow Ragnarok OST, and being this underrated IS a crime
Oh man I remember this game, it starts out so silly but ends up making you question humanity's future. Truly an underrated gem.
Edit: Out of all the WoG OST's, I would HIGHLY recommend you to listen to Best of Times, though the rest are amazing too, like Screamer and Burning Man to name a few
Came back to this after finding out a sequel to this game got announced. I'd really recommend checking out the rest of the soundtrack.
The nostalgia of this game is insane. My brother played it on his old laptop when I was a kid and I revisited the soundtrack when I was close to graduating high school. I'm very glad Marco reacted to this!
I forgot this game's existance for 5 years, happened to remember it, downloaded it and now the game is suddenly back on people's radar?
i might be wrong but it may be Netflix rereleasing world of goo remastered making it more relevant
WORLD OF GOO 2 BABYYYYY
The entire World of Goo OST brings a tear to my eye, but there is one song in particular that I can always remember, which is "Best of Times." For some reason, I can forget that the game exists, but I will randomly remember that one song. I don't remember much about the game as I played it when I was very young, but that song has always stuck. Honestly, I kind of just want to see you react to the entire OST, is just so powerful.
I think I'm gonna buy the game and play it again.
As someone already noted in the comments, "Little Inferno" from the same developer has some mad emotional OSTs. I recommend you to listen to them as well!
GOOBROS WE FUCKING WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Goo bros I'm 100% using that is it copyrighted? Can I have your permission to use that?
World of Goo OST has to be one of the best video game osts ever
Agreed
I haven't so much as thought about rhis game in over 7 years but as soon as I heard the first few seconds I immediately remembered how the rest of the song went.
Played this game just to listen to the music as I played. Some of my favourite game music ever.
Easily one of my favorite games I’ve ever played the ost is truly on another level for the time
Marco just wanted to say that you’ve been popping off more than usual these past videos. Congrats on 200k! You deserve much more. Have a good one, cheers!
Thank you!
Considering the story of the game, they really knew what they were doing with every single iota of the entire thing.
In the world of goo - you are the world.
I REALLY recommend playing through World of Goo, whether on your own time or on streams. It's a game filled with humour, feelings, philosophy, and of course puzzles that are not too hard yet still can challenge you, if you wanna 100% the game. It's mostly relaxing =з
Even my dad loves it
Oh wow. Knowing what little I do of the game, this is very unexpected.
Many thanks to whoever suggested it, and to you for sharing.
World of Goo is such a huge classic.
Everyone's recommending the entire OST. I'm recommending the entire game. Play it. Do it.
When this video cane out i remember wanting to go and hear the rest, now thanks to Mr. Meatball i have become hopelessly addicted to the World of Goo ost
I really recommend listening to the full soundtrack, it’s life changing
FINALLY a video analyzing the music of this game, I never thought it would happen
Oh goodness. I remember playing World of Goo in my local library when I was really young. Good memories...
Love this game, it has a pretty atmospheric soundtrack at times, and it’s got some really tough puzzles! Not too long of a game if you ever wanna give it a play.
If you listen to it without knowing the name, it puts you in miserable days of childhood. But if you get to know the name it reminds you to love your mother; before it's too late...
Wow, World of Goo, that's a real throwback there! It was a really fun game as a kid but I've completely forgoten about it until now. Thanks for analyzing its music!
Such an amazing interpretation from an amazing piece! I'm so glad that the World of Goo soundtrack is getting the recognition it deserves! I highly recommend listening to other tracks in this game, my personal favorite being Best of Times.
Man, i remember watching my dad play this game, feels like ages ago...
I had forgotten about World of Goo but I absolutely loved this game.
Oh no I remember this game. I wouldn't call this a core memory by any means bug it's certainly something I remember as being from a better time. Thinking back I'd say Goo is never a game you'd take seriously but it's somber ost made it relaxing.
My god...
I didn't expect you to actually give it a go
Man..
Thank you)
And man...
If you want World of Goo to hit you in your feelings again i recommend you to listen to a track called *Best of Times*
I wasn't prepared to see world of goo here
This soundtrack is in my everyday playlist, its so beautiful, emotional and variable
I'm not sure where the association comes from, but the music made me think of an astronaut, slowly drifting away from a spaceship into the void of space. If there was some kind of vgm IQ test where you had to match the music to video of gameplay, never in a million years would I have matched those two together.
glad you made this video. it's from my childhood man
What you should really listen to, is Best of Times. It's from the same game as the Mom song, and the song has always brought tears to my eyes. It reminds so many of the final stand a hero makes, or a tendersweet goodbye that is arguably one of the best songs in the entire game. You won't regret it if you listen to the song
You should consider making a video about the rest of the ost. It's fantastic.
It was a nostalgic moment since I missed that game.
Just came here from your Ace Combat video and here's another amazing soundtrack. We need more of these)
World of Goo is a wonderful little game! It has some really inspirational, emotional and motivating tracks!
If you ever have a few hours spare, I would love to see you play this game! (Unless you are allergic to physics-based puzzles) There is something so whole to see these little balls struggle and achieve big things together.
Splitting this into two comments. More in the reply. Because there are some tracks you should really listen to! (or play the game)
It took 20 years but this game is finally getting the attention it disserves!
You did it! I’m so glad, not sure if you saw my comment recently about this ost on your channel but the game has some really amazing songs, would love to see your opinion on more of them if you decide to do them
Played it when i was a kiddo. I would really like to see you taking a look at other tracks of goo world!
i almost forgot abt this game omg i used to play this a lot, such nostalgia 🥲
The art style of the game instantly reminded me of Contre Jour - a 2011 game that I played on my phone. I wonder if the developers are the same.
The soundtrack is brilliant. I strongly recommend to give it a try. I check it on youtube and it's available here.
OH MY GOD OH MY GOD YES MORE WORLD OF GOO PLEASE
man you really dont expect such an emotional piece from a game called the world of goo
man this game was my favorite game as a kid
March 12, 2021, it was then that while listening to this track, I somehow received an unusually heavy pleasure from sadness, establishing the author’s unique psycho-physiological phenomenon of sadness...
"Does anyone come to visit anymore?"
"You did."
Heh, that's pretty on point. I'd like to see your reaction to "Red Carpet Extend-O-Matic" and "Years of Work" from the same soundtrack.
That game was so good i wish there were a part 2
hehehehehehehe
Finally someone is talking about this OST, some of these tracks have stuck with me for decades now...
Man some times a guy needs a good cry to start his sunday ... I think i'm gonna go Buy breakfast for mom been a while since ive seen her
This game had an absurd soundtrack for a silly puzzle game, I remember being really impressed.
HOLY SHIT I LOVE THIS OST SM
World of goo has a weirdly amazing art style and music. it's some of the best
When I bought this game I was expecting to be decent, but it turned out thet game is great and music is outstanding
I don't comment often but man please react to more world of goo and even play it, it's an amazing game I played it 13 years ago it was my first game and its still has special place in my heart
I love your videos even though I sometimes don't understand every bit of English you say it's a really good time
My childhood T_____T
This one (or its fragment) plays on the ruins of the WoG Corporation, when the active chapter of the game is titled "End of the World" - so yeah it's mournful. It's a sad reprise of a track called Burning Man (titled after the 1st level it appears in) and that one plays in an industrial landscape, so that's where the heavy percussion at the end comes from - it's a callback. A reminder of how we got here.
The "can't slow down the marching of time" thing is disturbingly accurate. It's a game about how unchecked industry and capitalism is ruining the world.
LISTEN TO THE REST OF IIIIIT! Or better yet, play the game!
Not only it was my favorite game as a kid, but it is still one of my favorites today. I used to mod it, and honestly this track is one of the music i listened the most in my life, with Best of Time from the same game Ost. The person who made this soundtrack is Kyle Gabler and hes also the one who made the amazing graphics !
Never plaued the game never heard of it but god that playing with my heart and ears
Oh man, I remember playing this game as a kid, at the time I didn't have the mental capacity to understand the entirety of the story, but every time I finished it, it left me with this sense of longing, with the hope that maybe things could be better for the little balls of goo. What I did understand though was that the music was beautiful, it felt like this mix between tragic, nostalgia, a wish for a better future and the will to push through. Of course I couldn't identify these feelings back then, I was like 9-10 I think?, but the music always touched a deep part of my soul, I remember stopping in the middle of a level just to listen to the whole track.
I would totally recommend more from this OST, these are the ones I remember leaving an impact while I was playing:
-World of Goo Beginning (opening the game to this song was the highlight of my afternoon lol)
-Tumbler
-Screamer
-Red Carpet Extend-o-matic (I think only the first minute or so is in the actual level, but I still think the whole track it's pretty nice)
-Best of Times
-The Last of the Goo Balls and the Telescope Operator
my childhood in a song
world of goo 2 2024 lets goo
Woah, world of goo? I haven’t heard 5ha5 name in years!
The nostalgia this game has…
World of goo is one of my childhood all time games
I really wish most mobile games where as passionate as the old mobile game era
Oh yay one of my favorite OSTs
THE SECOND GAMES GONNA BE AMAZONG OMFG
0:09 Yes.
Please i beg of you listen to the full ost its so good
World of Goo is an absolutely criminally good game. It's doubtlessly the best mobile game ever made. The thematics are unreasonably fantastic.
aaaah, nostalgia..
i remember playing this game on my kindle tablet as a kid
I thought people forgot about this game, It surprisingly is very dark and deep, despite thinking it's a goofy game at first.
I would also reccomend best of times if you enjoy this games ost
Hey Marco, I'd love to hear your thoughts on "Pokémon Wielder Volo Battle Music" from the game Pokémon Legends Arceus. Without context for normal people, the vibe is not that easy to catch, but since your analysis are always spot on, I'd love to see your reaction!
Also once again, congratulations on 200k!❤
thank you! Ill be avoiding pokemon i think :)

Beautiful song :D
