    Regular trip time to Paris is 3h 35min instead of 4h 22min. The reason for the elongated travel time is the renovation of the Stuttgart-Mannheim HSL. This renovation ends on Oct. 31st. Then ICE/TGV trains will head to Karlsruhe with 250 kph again.

    When you have an "Flexpreis-Ticket" for the first class in an ICE or IC you can use DB Lounge and the DB Premium Lounge. These Lounges are at the bigger Stations in Germany.

    Have you traveled on the Cologne-Frankfurt line yet? It's a journey of less than 50 minutes (By car it takes 1h30 if you're lucky and driving very fast), and the route is rather astonishing, having a huge amount of tunnels and bridges, with grades of up to 4%. If you manage to get a seat behind the driver, it becomes a roller coaster like experience. Officially the top speed on the route is 300kph, but due to the steep grades you'll often go faster, especially if the train is delayed. One time my train reached 323kph.

    • @APiesc
      @APiesc 4 года назад +4

      Maybe it was a speed of a little bit more than 300 km/h. Thats usually the maximum speed on the Köln-Frankfurt line. To Paris they are faster with about 320 - 330 km/h.

      It is quite a few years back (2009 or 2010) so I might be misremembering, but the train had stopped just after entering the SFS going towards Frankfurt when it stopped for about 25 minutes. And I distinctly remember seeing the speed on the display passing 320kph once we got going again.

      @OntarioTrafficMan 4 года назад +6

      The Köln-Frankfurt line is equipped with LZB cab signalling which will automatically apply the brakes if the train exceeds the speed limit by more than a couple km/h. If you saw a speed display much over 300 then it was probably due to a sensor error (GPS position error etc).

    Good to mention the difference between the two series of ICE3.
    Also worth noting : In the latest iteration, the nice lounge behind the driver cab was removed. It was possible to see tracks in front and turn the main lights off in this area. Very handy for sleeping, especially when I took an early morning train from Munich. Vision through the driver compartment can be blocked by the driver himself : by a simple command, the glass wall becomes blurry.
    First series of ICE3 also have 6-seat compartments in 1st class. The lounge with front (or back) view is present on the ICE-T trains as well.

    I often travel with ICEs and can say that the seats in 1st class suck because they are too slippery. There are some little cookies or chocolate bars that the staff is giving in 1st class, so there is a little snack, but it is something, right? :D I prefer the 2nd class seats. In my opinion the 1st and 2nd generations of the ICEs are the best. I love the seats (2nd class) there. You should ride them! The worst ICE is the newest 4th gen, because the seats and speed suck. You can book (even last minute sometimes) the Sparpreis on DB. It is very hidden on ticket mashines and website, but you can maybe travel cheaper. Greetings from Frankfurt, Germany!

    The journey would have been ~30 minutes faster (3:50) if the high speed line between Stuttgart and Mannheim wasnt temporarily closed to renew the tracks. The train would normally use it from Stuttgart all the way to the railway junction near Bruchsal (the route shown on the DB Website is false).

    I like the ICE more than the TGV. I find even the second class much more comfortable (especially the head cushion) and the whole design of the interior is so much more nice and timeless than the TGV. A lot of the TGVs have a very outdated interior design. Also the ICE is more iconic on the outside, because we kept the same timeless design over the years and don‘t change it completely every couple of years.

    I wonder, that people were standing in the train like they had no place to sit. Weren't they obliged to have a reservation in France? In Germany ICE-Trains often were overcrowded (before corona). We once came to a halt in Frankfurt Airport Station and the conductors informed us, that everybody without a seat has to leave the train. They pointed out, that the high-speed route ahead had tighter safety regulations and the train cannot take the route, if there are more people on board than the train has seats. Since only a few people voluntarily left, the conductors offered 25 Euros for everybody to leave. After it was clear, that there are still too many people on the train, Police came in and cleared the train from passengers without their own seat. After more than one hour the ICE went on....

    I really like the Velaro, it is now the only possibility to find a non-refurbished ICE 3 (yes, it is officially an ICE 3) with guarantee, the old first class seats are so much better! I frequently travel between Köln and Mannheim, and there are more and more refurbished ICE 3's, which are a disappointment in terms of seating...
    My advice would be to buy DB tickets in advance. When I go to France, I usually find tickets to Paris (from Mannheim, 3 hour trip) for about 40 euros in first class, I just book in advance. The Flexpreis is way too expensive and barely brings an average traveler an advantage (only the DB lounge and a possibility to use any train of the day, which is usually useless for a traveler with a set plan).

    In your summary of criticism of Stuttgart 21 you forgot the most important point: It is a massive reduction in capacity and operational fexibility. We're paying billions to destroy railway capacity and instead we'll get a station that will operate at 100+ percent capacity from day one without any option for increases. It is a real estate first and foremost. The railway network mostly gains a bottleneck.

    I absolutely agree that the seats on these trains could be better. In fact, VIA Rail Canada uses the same seats that are used in 1st class on these trains in their economy class.
    That said, they are still better than the 1st class on ICE 4, which I found absolutely dreadful when on a 5 hour Mannheim to Berlin segment. Thankfully I only paid 64 Euros for a first class Paris to Berlin ticket, so I guess it wasn't all that bad.
    I did find the ICE 2 to be quite comfortable though.

    Could top speeds in Germany be restricted by outdated infrastructure? Because that is a major issue on British railways, where the infrastructure dates back to the mid-19th century and the trains can't travel faster than 200km/h as a result

    • @heybenjii5544

      There are Top Speeds in Germany, just not in that route. The Infra is not that old, but also outdated

    • @outdoorolli5754

      On that route trains rech 250 kph twice - once over a distance of about 50 km between Stuttgart and Karlsruhe, where even 280 is possible and once between Baden Baden and Appenweier (30 km). But of course 320 kph over 400 km is much more impressive.
      One point is, that Germanys southern regions are quite mountainous, so building hispeed routes is quite expensive. Another is, that distances between stops are shorter than in France, since in Germany is a federal country with several strong regional centers. Long distance railway is not orientated towards the capital, but between several economic centers of gravity.

    I do agree with you that it is disappointing that food and drink are not included in a first class ticket. Other railways include this.
    Also; the lack of meals or even drinks make first class seem to lack value, especially when one considers that 2nd class is perfectly comfortable and much cheaper
