Man you are a genius I watch your videos every single day doesn't matter how small the video or how complex you should have a billion view you're amazing I'm learning a lot thank you so much master
If there is a leak in one side the controller will automatically let down the other side when the car is parked overnight. Sounds to me that both bag units were replaced unnecessarily beforehand because the valve was leaking. BMW do not list the valve block on its own. I'm impressed you saved the customer a whole lot of money.
This is the first of your videos I have watched - it was extremely well presented and explained and really really helpful - Thank you for taking the time to do it - Now I hope I can find my problem!!
Great video, I have this problem. Loads of people have made it sound very difficult to diagnose and even more expensive to fix. . . . Now I have a line to follow to sort it myself. Thanks
just started watching your videos man your skills are amazing the bmw with the door handle causing a no start german cars not anybody can work on this cars going to keep watching your videos your use of the labscope keep it coming
Had one that i took over after 2 colleagues failed to find the issue and replaced both air springs. there was absolutely no external leak at all and it didn't take me long to think if the valve after the compressor stays open it will leak back through the compressor. I took of the inlet filter for the compressor and placed my finger over it for 15 seconds and let go and I could hear the "whoosh" from the air. Also placed my ear right up to it and could hear a very faint hissing sound. Replaced it and all good 👍
For these leaks that can be so hard to find - one method I have used successfully several times is to pressurize the system with a dilute hydrogen / nitrogen mix. Diluting the gas makes it much more safe to use and reduces the chance of ignition. Only a small quantity of gas is used, because the method is extremely sensitive. Carbon monoxide detectors are very cross sensitive to hydrogen. A personal carbon monoxide detector is then used to find the region that is leaking. Since H2 always rises like smoke, you can waft the sensor over the top of the plumbing to find the leak very quickly. I mostly used this method with refrigeration systems that were slow leaking their refrigerant at such a low rate that soap solution was not effective for finding the leak. There were other leak locations that were generally inaccessible that the hydrogen test helped find (such as a leaking evaporator buried in the dash), etc.
Much thanks for this video, I was about to replace the whole pump after using soap and water I couldn't find the leak. Never know it was the solenoid it was leaking from.
I found exactly same problem in a cayenne, where the car was releasing air very slowly, If we start the car it will go back to right level( now it happens because compressor starts to suck natural air during starting). In my case it was caused by rat-bite on a suspension air pipe...... Great video...
Very informative . Unfortunately, I have a535iGT so the components are a bit different. Car is showing a short to ground in the "dump valve", so I'm wondering if the dump valve would be in the control block. I have searched high and low, but have been unable to find any reference to a "dump valve". This video is the only help I have found thus far.
Thank you for the video. My car does that from the left well first and then right well after that and deflates less the right well, so I guess I will try to switch the valve block.
Yes I spotted it at around 655 too and thought initially it was the soapy water running down block but it started again after stopping and that gave it away.
Great video Dan, I wonder how you did not notice the leak when spraying on valve body it is clearly visible near the yellow line bubbles are coming out.
Dan, great video above with step by step diagnosis as you work through the issue to isolate. My Question: last night I experienced, for the first time ever, both sides deflated after driving. I parked within 5 mins, turned car off and then I heard the air compressor working to restore both sides to normal height. The car has been sitting now for over 14 hours and it has not dropped. It feels like this may be an electrical issue and maybe related to the AC Relay going bad. Is there a good test for isolating the relay, or should I test the air lines? Thanks!
Very helpful, got exactly the same problem like u described. Just had both my bags replacement on a x5 but both sides still going down about 2 hrs after engine is shut. However only rises when I switch engine on not with door open. Before replacing the bags the car raised as soon as I opened the door but now only raises with engine on. Any ideas? Thanks.
Hi Dan, amazing and detailed video. I am having the same problem (airbags replaced and can find any leaks with soapy water). I saw u putting the valve block in a container with water to find the leak and was wondering if this is recommended since there is also electrical connectors inside the valve block and i dont want those to be damaged. Hope to hear from u soon.
I told the customer i had to submerge the car in the lake to find the leak , he was puzzled but happy it was fixed ,, and oo did your stereo work before ?? Hope your having a great week Dan !!
Very nice Dan!! Perhaps another way would have been to charge it with freon and then use your electronic leak detector. They r very sensitive. That leak would have made my leak detector scream. Just a thought.
I have a 2004 E 53 4.4 i with jus the rear self leveling ,I replaced the left and right air springs cause the left air spring had a bad leak and I replaced the right rear level sensor cause a code said to replace it so I did . The pump fills up the air springs but it still sag on the left side when I’m not driving when it’s sits ,I checked for leaks found no leaks do I need to replace the left level sensor too ? There was no code for the left sensor that’s why I didn’t replace it .
That's what I call it common sense, great job Dan must of technician don't have it on their tool box 🤔🤔👌 and i hope that was no tequila ........arriba rriba.
Hey man i need your help. Same problem here. Only thing is only right side is going down. And when i turn it on car is a inch lower on that side after airbags het pumped. Thanks
Do you know if the e39 sedan has the same system, I know that is very rare on sedan but a friend of mine just replaced the air struts and the car is down on both sides overnight
so my e39 wagon has the issue where the right side is always lower than the left. it raises when pressurized but not as high as the other side and after it lowers its lower than the drivers side. is thaat a bag or a compressor system leak?
Hello excellent video, I have problem my X5 2001 has 6 months of being saved and today that the use does not lift the two sides and the compressor is not heard working, and the airbags are hard as if they had air that you think it could be? Please need help
I have a problem with my compressor i think. It doesnt automatically working when starting or opening door. Only works if I test with plus cable from red on battery to the plus cable on the compressor. It's only the left side suspension that sunk. I changed the left suspension. Didnt work. Im think maybe I should change thw relay
Hi Dan, I love your vids but so far they haven't helped me diagnose my 2001, BMW e39, 525d. I have a rear air suspensions dash warning light fault!. Previously, I had a problem with my driver side rear suspension going down overnight, the ride height dash warning light was also ON, I changed both rear airbags as they were old anyway!. I also changed the ride height sensors, Then I found I also had a tiny leak in the compressors solenoid valve. So, I put a new valve block on too, My rear suspension has been working well for 5 months now, It is level and the compressor comes on occasionally as and when needed, The suspension height stays up and is quite level. The problem is,= I can't get the ride height dash warning light to go "OUT" !!.... (except for taking number 18 fuse out at MOT time). Any ideas what the fault could be to get the warning light to go out?... I have changed just about everything except for the relay next to the compressor and the compressor itself !.. I am running out of ideas, I just want the dash light to go out. Do you think there could be another hidden fault or will it simply be a case of recalibrating the rear suspension using a high-quality scan tool like yours ?. I don't have a scan tool that will scan my 2001 BMW e39, That's mainly because I can't find a cheap scan tool that will do e39 rear air suspension!.. Any ideas to help?. Many thanks in advance, from dave, in the UK.
My X5 Sagged completely while i was driving , and about 3 days i was trying to find out why the compressor was working every time when i was locking the car but the car wouldn’t rase and i jacked the car up and tried again the car raised up until now its fine. Any idea why the car sagged ? Thank you very much.
DiagnoseDan Great vid! Now if I could just find where my leak is in my 07 s8 air suspension. I’ve had it at an Audi dealer and 3 independent shops and nobody can find it. All they want me to keep doing is buying new struts which are expensive as hell. I’ve replaced the relay, compressor, valve block, the front struts are brand new and the rears are rebuilt. I’ve spent $1,000’s and still can’t find the leak. I love this car and would really like to find out where the hell this leak is. Mine leaks very slow and all 4 sides come down evenly.. I suspect air lines have leaks somewhere but can’t get anyone to figure it out. Any suggestions?
Dustin this i very strange! if all 4 sides come down, you either have 4 seperate leaks ( small chance). Or you have a leak at the valveblock.(only thing all 4 sides have in common). Try to do the same thing as i did in my video and submerge the valveblock in water ( i know you've replaced it). If you replaced all that parts for 1000 dollar i guess you did not use only new parts. Succes!
DiagnoseDan thanks for the reply Dan. I spent $1,000’s actually. The compressor was $1400 (new) along with new bracket ($500); the valve block ($750) new; the front struts ($750 a piece) new but aftermarket since oem are $1,800 a pop; relay was new (cheap) and the rear struts were $450 a piece to rebuild. It is very strange..
Hello sir , i own a bmw e66 7 series 2006 model , I have the same problem in video , when I park my car , after few hours the suspension will drop( both side suspensions drop evenly, not one side)and rise when u start my car but my air suspension compressor turning on every 10 seconds , continuously running . Is it okay to drive the car with the air compressor running during the whole drive
My compressor is running but the air is not filling the airbags. I checked the whole line and found no leaks. Air is making it all the way into the reservoirs. This happened overnight after a upper right rear wishbone change. Please help
Hi, I have an E39 Wagon 2000 model 520iA. I have a lamp that lights up that there is something wrong with the Air suspension. It keeps the air pressure. I do not notice anything wrong. Where are the fuses for this system. What Number of fuse does this have.
Hello Dan! I have an issue with my e39 but im not sure what it is. My rear right air suspension keeps lowering when im not driving the car. When i open the door and start it up you can hear the compressor working and lifting it up, but for a period of time i have noticed that it sometimes doesnt go up to the height it should be and sometimes it does. And i have also had a light turn up 4 or 5 times on the dashboard that says that there is a problem with the suspension. What do you think the problem is? Im hoping myself that its not the compressor but the air suspension itself but im not sure. I would appreciate an answer.
@@Diagnosedan Hello again best Dan! I actually haven't done anything. But i think it would be weird if it is the airspring because sometimes it fills it up to the max and sometimes it does not. And sometimes during a drive i hear the compressor working with filling in air.
My car BMW gran Turismo 550 revealed .. Level control malfunction on dash screan.. And the air bag suspension not inflated and for this its fall down and i cant drive it.. Please any body can help me to solve this proplem..
What if you have a leak where both sides go down, you have checked all the hoses, bags are new, resorvoars are ok, and you tried another compressor. But it still drops on both sides after a few houres.. :-S And the compressor comes from a car that did not have any leak problems..
I wonder how many thousands of euros this car will cost its many owners for air suspension problems over the lifetime. Manufacturers design these for the original owner, with little respect for those trying to keep them alive years later.
It reminds me of family summer holidays my dad insisting on taking them inflatable boats that only he liked to use but he always claimed the kids want it... lol... and spending hours traking down some pesky little leak on it and finally glue it and apply one of those shitty patches over it :D

At around the 7:02 mark you can see bubbles at the top of the block. Great video thought, and putting the block in water, very clever. Gold Star.

Simon Lea succes with your problem and remember the problem is always somewhere between the frond and the rear bumper😉
Great job Dan ,your approach was excellent.
Thanks Again Tam!
Hi Dan, yet again an excellent approach to a hard to find problem, very educational and great to learn!
Paul Lane it was actually quite hard to find, thanks for you nice comment!

Great video Dan! I hav had those problems but never thought about submerging the valve block..... great job

Great way to find leaks. Soap is highly caustic to aluminum. Big blue give a much better performance. Sonic leak detection is probably the best.

Nice explanation of the system and diagnosis (I have an E53 with the same system). What fault codes did you read before looking for leaks?
On these older models the fault codes for this system are that limited that I didn't even bother reading them.
Don 't forget to check the valveblock on Airsuspension systems.
The biggest suspects of an airleak are of course the airsprings, so check those first!

In the hypotese that the common valve was not leaking, would you have been destroyed the solenoids filling them with water?
gearstil, The valves are totaly sealed. A few seconds in water should do no Harm. there is no electronics inside them.😁
