  • The Nürburgring, known as the "Green Hell," has a haunting history.
Since its inception in 1927, it's claimed 79 lives, including Formula 1 drivers, officials, and spectators.
The track's deadly reputation stems from its steep elevation changes, blind corners, and lack of safety measures. Even after safety improvements, disaster struck in 1976 when Niki Lauda survived a fiery crash. The owners eventually decided to build a new track better suited for Formula 1 racing, but it never truly gained popularity. With financial challenges and a changing F1 landscape, its future remains uncertain.

So before the ‘76 German GP there was one specific concern by Lauda and some of the other drivers about the Nurburgring that often gets lost in history. The main concern they had was the organizer’s ability to effectively manage the circuit to GP standards of the time- which they just couldn’t. The Ring needed 5 times more marshals and safety personnel than any of the other GP’s on the calendar- and the organizers simply were not able or willing to organize that- it was extremely expensive. It’s just really hard to organize an international motor race on a circuit of that size and length. As for Lauda’s accident it took 5 to 6 minutes for marshals and emergency services to get to the accident scene, as opposed to now where it is mandated that there are emergency services within 30 seconds of any incident, which is why other drivers stopped to get Lauda out of his burning Ferrari. 5 to 6 minutes can mean the difference between life and death, and for poor old Lauda it so very nearly meant death.

I wholeheartedly agree on that. Like I said before, the other F1 drivers KNEW he didn't stand the slightest chance of survival without thier help in getting him out of that burning hulk, and I believe wholeheartedly that Roger Williams' horrific death, as well as Jo Siffert's in the 60s-era of F1 was on thier minds when they came up that straight, just past Ex Muhle, and ran into Lauda's 'engulfed in flames' Scuderia-Ferrari 312-T2. They knew if they didn't stop and 'act', like what SHOULD have happened for Roger Williams a few years before (I believe he would have lived, had other drivers stopped to help flip that car over, maybe. It WAS a BAD crash), they knew that Niki would die. And they weren't about to let that happen on 'thier' watch.

@@VideosVarious2 The 2 drivers that saved Lauda didnt just simply stop they ran into him... also no it wasnt those cases, it was just a general uneasiness in regards to fire that prompted drivers to help each other and back then there was a real sense of comradery in the paddock. Your analysis is just not based in any reality.

Lauda's 'rear suspension failure' which caused him to instantaneously lose control of his Ferrari 312-T2 happened just BEFORE the 'right hander' turn known as 'Bergwerk', not 'at Bergwerk'. The section, shortly after the right-hand corner ' Ex Muhle', is a fast uphill straight followed by a 'fast left-hand kink' and then to a straight that runs to Bergwerk, is now called 'Lauda Linksknick', or, 'Lauda Left Kink." That, is where he spun off the straightaway just before the lefthand 'kink' and smashed into the Armco barrier, and then spun back onto and down the track, before being hit by American F1 driver Brett Lunger and another car, of whom ALL jumped out to save Lauda from burning to death. They all must have remembered what happened to Roger Williams at Zandvoort, and weren't gonna let that happen on that hot August day in 1976, at Nurburgring. As it was, that was the LAST Formula 1 race ever held at the Nordschleiffe. It would take more money than anyone is willing to pay for that track to ever be brought up to even F1 standards of 1976, let alone 2024. But what an awesome sight that would be, if they ever did, huh? But then again, the 'history' of the old Nordschleiffe would be forever changed, and I don't think most people would want to see that happen.

"...That, is where he spun off the straightaway just before the lefthand 'kink' and smashed into the Armco barrier, and then spun back onto and down the track,..."
In fact, there was no armco barrier on the right side of the track. Only a catch fence.
      Roger Williams = Roger Williamson.

I’ve always held the opinion that the Nurburgring is a great track for driving, but terrible for racing. If you see the races today held at the Nordschleife, they are excruciatingly boring. What would you expect out of a 14+ mile track with only two real passing zones? It should be viewed as a relic of the past.

FIA want to win America but they'll lose many fans pampering to those American tastes. It wouldn't be so bad if the circuits in America were real circuits and not streets of a city. Monaco is a rare exception to this rule, although it isn't an exciting race these days. At least, the other races in Europe are proper circuits and proper races that don't limit these cars so much. If Liberty wanted to change F1 why did they buy it in the first place? F1 fans don't need Liberty Media!

Having driven the circuit and watched the 1976 German Grand Prix at the ‘Ring, I can say I totally disagree with the title you’ve given the track as the Worst F1 track of all time. If you equate danger with how bad a track is, How about Imola, Spa, Jeddah, Suzuka or Monaco? The last time I checked, auto racing, in any car on any track is dangerous. The new Nurburgring circuit qualifies as a bad track, most Herman Tilke tracks are devoid of character or challenge. If racing scares you, don’t do it, any track can take a life in the blink of an eye.
