  • The subject of necks has been coming up a lot lately... There seems to be some confusion about what you actually get when you buy a replacement... for whatever reason. I have never seen a neck that is completely ready to go, right out of the box. Some are better than others but they all need to be tweaked a little bit to play the best they can. It might be slight adjustments or sometimes this means, truss rod wrenching, fretwork, deepening or widening the nut slots , finish etc. In these videos we will touch on some of the things you should expect to have to deal with when you buy a new, replacement neck.

    Great vid. I got a Musikraft neck last year for my Tele, and it's great. I did have to let it settle in for a couple of weeks after I attached it before I could do I final setup, but haven't had to touch it since.

      It’s happened to me more than once, where I’ve pressed the “Like” thumbs up and for some reason it shows as a thumbs down. I’ve read comments where this has happened to other people. I’ll give these people the benefit of the doubt, but if they purposely pressed thumbs down, then they’re monkey spankers in my book!

    👍
    Only thing you forgot was acclimatization.
    Let it sit for a while if it comes from far away and has to deal with some climate changes. Doing this with no stress from truss rods or strings is a must in my opinion (for what it's worth).
    Love the neck you made for me and was an extra bonus when I was able to pick it up in person cause I happened to be in Denver that week from the other side of the globe!
    take care ✌

    Great vid Matt. See the guy asking about kits in the comments? Well, if you make a neck, and make a body, that’s a kit! Throw in some hardware maybe? I know Precision custom fits the parts - I’m sure Texas Toast would do the same. A short video series on making a neck and a body as parts for sale? I figure you’ve got a lot of subscribers interested in diy guitar building that don’t have the pin routers. Just a thought. I don’t think they expect it to be cheap. I think they know if you and Chris made it, it would be high quality!

    • @TexasToastGuitars
      @TexasToastGuitars  4 года назад +3

      We have always made bodies, necks, etc. for people who want to dabble in building guitars. We offer classes in addition to the numerous RUclips videos and even rent shop space for people who want to build guitars but have no tools. I think people should know that we are here to help.
      In my experience, when people say words like "kits" they are not thinking about the money we would have to charge. Maybe I'm wrong but I think people expect kits to be cheap regardless of quality.
      Lets find out... I'll do a video about bodies and necks and see what the response is. If we sell any at all I'll owe you a beer.

    My experience of buying lower cost necks is that the heel dimensions vary, so they frequently won't fit bodies from another source. Fretwork often looks superficially OK and even looks like the frets have been levelled and polished to some degree, but you will often find frets that have not be fully inserted and frets where the ends are floating in space and wont tap down. With fretwork this poor, attempting to level without fixing these problems is a waste of time. I'd really like to get some of the Bitterroot hex keys BUT ... the shipping to the UK shows as over $80 !! And I would likely have to pay 20% import tax plus £12 handling.

      @@TexasToastGuitars I know what you mean 8-)) I have been stupid enough to buy several craptastic necks and I'm really putting off trying to fix them.
      So any tips would be great, particularly if you can show techniques for hand tools only as well as machine assisted. I 'aint got no machinery :-((
      By the way - I have just been checking the truss rod on a Chinese made Squier. I though it was single action, so I started to unscrew the nut so I could lubricate it. Then I noticed it was actually forcing the walnut fillet out of the truss rod access hole (I don't think it was glued in very securely). Surely double action rods aren't supposed to push against that fillet? Maybe its just because its Chinese and the truss rod nut (3/16 key) is bigger than the hole in the fillet. Or are all the truss rods with a fillet like that?
