Cotton played this song differently every time. He could say anything and everything that he wanted to say through it. When James Cotton brought out the chromatic harmonica for "Blues in My Sleep" in his later live shows, that took the conversation to a whole new level. The way the audience would connect with him on this song was extraordinarily transcendental. He blew out harps all the time playing them the way he did, but he got the most mileage out of his Seydel harps. "Blues in My Sleep" was the final song played at Cotton's memorial service.
Will, you've done a fantastic job analyzing, explaining and breaking down this video version of the song. Great work.
Went to see Johnnie Winters play and James Cotton was the warm up band. Johnnie Winters was an overly loud screaming band. James Cotton was a laid back blues band with a song at the end that had each member of the band stop playing until James was the last player and it was amazing, i'll never forget that. What a talent he was.
This is one of my favorite performances and you expertly brake it down... you make this easy, short, simple n sweet. You're a blessing to the Harp community Brother 🙏
Me too. I have loved this performance for ages.
Yes Will… your expert analysis & deconstruction of tracks is always immeasurably helpful & deeply appreciated - Many thanks 🙏😊👏😜
So so agree
If I ever find one of those lamps with the Genies in them, my first wish will be to play like James Cotton. In the meantime, I have to practice. Thanks Will!
James had to practice too...
I learn a lot from you and i have improved a lot in 8 months. Thank you very much Bro.
James Cotton is a huge inspiration for me whenever I'm playing blues. It's an absolute shame I took up the harmonica a year after he passed away because I would've loved to have a conversation with him. Rest in peace, Cotton Mouth Man.
I think that the Sound of cotton is probably the one that appeals the more to my soul.
I wish one day you will do The Creeper . Bravo for your new song!
I find it harder to explain what I'm playing than actually playing ir, awesome my brother, I can't explain the way I play what I feel, but have taught a few young kids some of my original licks, god bless you, keep rocking!👍
The best version of this was called "Slow and Easy", with the Chris Barber band on an EMI EP, later it appeared on a compilation.
Thanks. I love James Cotton’s playing. He also played some great funky blues.
James Cottons, "Live and on the Move" Album/CD is an Essential to have!!!!!!!!!!
and J Geiles "Full House" Album/CD,
Along with The Blues Brothers "Briefcase full of Blues" Album/CD as well".
*and everything by "The Lamont Cranston Band" that you can get your hands on!!!!!!!!!!
Kudos to you, Will, really great work..
James was my early favorite, but was so far beyond that I never even tried to play anything like him. But now, after woodshedding for decades... thanks to this video I feel it's solidly within reach. Awesome breakdown!
You are a splendide teacher.
Thank you very much
You're a awesome teacher Will, I'm always learning something new from
your lessons and l believe that part of being expressive is becoming one
with your instrument, thank you for sharing.
Great lesson Will. Thanks
What a lesson
GENIO TOTAL , MUY BUENOOOOOOO . SALUDOS DESDE BUENOS AIRES ARGENTINA :)
Friggin awesome I love it!!!!!
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.. I just started playing about a week ago and your knowledge and experience is gold to me.. thanks again mate👍👍👍
Excellent analysis and lesson Will!
Admire this man.
Will, you're a legend. 🤘
Epic Will, Great breakdown of a dude that is nothing less than a God ... I love the way later in the clip when he says, "well that was a bunch of blues" ... probably the best slow blues clip I've ever seen ... thanks for the breakdown , it shone a a lot of light on how he's so casual yet so true to the blues 🙏
Thanks for this Will! its a lifetime worth of playing in this video but great to play some slow blues. Thanks!
Cheers Paddy!
Outstanding Tutorial!!!!
Thank you very much .Great way of teaching
I've fallen entirely in love with your minor set of harmonicas, they've finally arrived from the UK and sound delightful🎉
That's great to hear!
Excellent job Will breaking this all down! I think Mr. Cotton would have been pleased by this.
Cheers Pete!
COOL 😎
omg its the harmonica man!!!
Thanks Will! Enjoyed this and I am really loving the new Blues Course!! Love the way you break everything down , call and response and just making it a great learning experience.
Al
Loved your selection here & your critique! He truly was a gem when it comes to nuanced harmonica playing! So are you!
After watching your video, I started scrolling down the RUclips page & found a harmonica player I'd never heard before; it was a live clip of Julian James doing a live performance of "Baby Please Don't Go". Couldn't help but wonder what you'd have to say about his style of playing. It's very much like he's speaking "Baby Please," etc. while he's playing. Please! Do keep your videos coming! 💪🥂
Superb Will, thank you for so expertly breaking down this very layered and emotional track.
Great explanation, great teacher, love it
Thank you Will! This is fantastic. Great that you are teaching us here. Much appreciated.

Awesome job on this video Will.... Thank you for another great video my man......
that's one really great lesson you just gave us. many thx. very very helpful thx again
Glad you enjoyed it!
So sweet
James would visit the Boston area now and then. I always tried to catch the show. I also saw him with Muddy Waters back in the 70’s. Matt Guitar Murphy was there on occasion. Matt even came over and played pinball with us once. Long time ago.
Your breakdown of the technique is masterful while keeping it human, telling us we are not going to sound like him and he will sound different each time he plays it. But we can put our interpretation of it. Yes, keep it going mate!
very good. I learned to play my babe little walter with his teaching. Thank you very much
An awesome lesson!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Will, I love your playing and how you explain what James is doing is his song! I've seen enough of you videos that I had to subscirbe and hope to take you course once I have some time to paly and practice. Thank you for doing what you do!
Thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed the lesson!
There it is. Great. Thanks, Will!😎
Well explained, great teaching, awesome!

Superb video and breakdown of this performance. I am taking your course now and this is like the graduate school level! Brian

Great video Will. I had the pleasure of taking a couple of lessons with you in 2020. You've always kept me motivated and hungry to learn more.
Thanks Garry!
Nicely done Will. Thanks for this. I'm coming to see you play at the North Wales Blues and Soul gig in August. Always loved your playing man. 👊
See you there!
WOW, Great lesson
Glad you enjoyed it.
Rest in power MR COTTON...
Wow, I have been waiting for this one. Awesome! I wanted to see if you could lend us a hand with anything off either one of the live J.Geils band albums (Full House or Blow your Face Out) Not necessarily Whammer Jammer. I was hoping you would due the sole to "Hard Driving Man" "Shoot your Shot" ( The shuffle and/or Sole) or intro to "Where did our Love Go" or solo to "Hard Driving Man" Any of these would be greatly anticipated and appreciated. Thank you!
Great Master...big hug from Brazil ....happy New year

9:29 bravo

Come to SPAH in Tulsa!
👍👍👍
Can you please review Kim Wilson’s Going Away Baby? Technically Fabulous Thunderbirds.
Yet another terrific lesson Will! Those old Blues players were amazing for sure. No lessons needed just pure inborn talent. It didn't matter whether they had a guitar in their hands or a harmonica in their mouth, they just knew how to play it. So wish that I had that kind of talent! Happy New Year Will.. 👍👍
Very helpfull, thanx! Can somebody tell me, if JC played tongueblocked?
Based
I play saxophone professionaly🎷 soprano, alto & tenor...ive tried playing harmonica. I find it hard to play.😮
Mate: will
You come to Canada?
Will you know terry harmonica bean he has a jam at a concert that is the stuff would like to know if you can show me the tag
Dont know the song but if you could help me
Mate … THE CREEPER! Please 🙏
Grab your A harp confused me, because isn't the studio version in G?
I don't know about the studio version, but the live version I'm breaking down here is in E
@@willharmonicawilde Yes, that I understood 🙂
you should play your heart, instead of pointing to other guy's sound.
I do... but this is a tutorial video about James Cotton for people who are learning harmonica
@@willharmonicawilde btw, great tutorial, you sound amazing
That's precisely what Will says all along the Tutorial...play your way....nnnotoriousBoyish bad pupil. Well done Will Huge Done
