    Any type of hobby shared involves some level of consumerism, and the responsibility is down to each person, not to you. Your videos are entertaining and calming and a great addition to the fountain pen community. If a person feels they need to blame you for their purchases, that is on them, not you. I love videos like these because I love seeing what other people love, and it helps me figure out what I like and what I lean towards. Don’t ever stop your videos!

    I see the inner conflict of adding to consumerism, but ultimately I think you and others are just sharing what you love and your own collection. I don’t think it’s up to you and other content creators to worry about what us as observers do. We are responsible for our own actions and if we are triggered by the need for more, than that is something we need to look deep inside ourselves to dissect. I wish the ink swap was an ongoing thing instead once a year so far. That may help reduce the consumerism feelings people may have.

      Absolutely. Thanks for your response, a good reminder that what others decide to do is 100% their responsibility and that I don't need to feel responsible about that! I agree with you, ink swapping on a more regular basis would be lovely, to connect with new folks while pursuing the hobby.

    I actually love watching ink swatches because I don't want to purchase inks just relying on swatches at shops. Even if its only ink samples, I am pretty serious with buying things I would really use. Videos like this help me to more responsible on my purchases.

    Hi Liane, feel rest assured that watching your videos has not made me purchase any inks. I have been feeling more decisive with purchasing ink, making sure they fill a void and not a very close look alike to something I already own and probably don't need. I find your videos fill a want/need to swatch inks without purchasing inks.😆So thank you for doing that. I just want to see inks being swatched and written with. I really do like your large swatches. I also like to hear what people like or dislike about inks, colour, properties. I also really enjoy the comparison videos as I may have one of the inks and see how close or different something might be to an ink I know and have used.

    I’m thinking about the consumerism aspect as well. Another thing that goes through my mind is gatekeeping: Am I portraying that someone who only has one pen and ink is not welcome?
    I’ve come to the conclusion that sharing my own struggles with FOMO and the strategies I try to combat that (successfully and unsuccessfully) is enough. Everyone who watches me can hear my excitement, me geeking out over something so weird as subtle differences in ink colors, or how wet and juicy a nib is, should be able to easily determine that I’m not sharing for enabling reasons but for community aspects of this hobby. I hope that makes sense.

    As an artist, I love watching these kinds of videos as it really sparks my creativity - also as a collector of art and writing materials, I find videos such as these an enjoyable and informative way to discover new inks or pens to add to my collection. Also as a creator of art material hauls and swatching videos myself, my main motivator for creating them is hopefully as a resource for other artists and creators too. Thank you for sharing 💕

    24:52 I have ebbs and flows when it comes to purchasing all the things when it comes to my hobbies. There are times when I buy all the things and there are periods when nothing new interests me. I can't say that watching these videos (knitting podcasts, planner videos, or ink swatches) pushes me to buy more but it can if the person watching wants all the new and shiny things.
    I've been in the fountain pen hobby since about 2009/2010 and in the beginning I bought lots of pens and inks then I went 5 or 6 years without buying anything new. Then this last year I've purchased about 10 or so pens and more than 20 bottles of inks. I'll most likely be done for the next several years unless a brand comes out with an amazing chroma-shader I just HAVE to have.

    P.S. To answer your question about "inspiring" people to buy...I think you can look at it in a more positive note. When someone has a hobby or a new interest, they are most likely going to spend...with or without any additional inspiration. Providing your swatching videos can really help someone focus more easily on the things they will like AND USE, rather than them making purchases and realizing they don't like the product when they get it home. Buying and not using is much worse than buying and utilizing. I've watched a LOT of swatching videos and they really have helped me make better choices about my ink and pen purchases. Since I have to order online, it's very helpful to get multiple reviews (especially for pens!) before buying.
    I don't own any of these inks, but I love the Harvest Persimmon. I'm not a fan of Oxblood. I don't like that dark, dark red. (Maybe the name is also a factor? Not appealing.)

    I understand your inner struggle. The truth is RUclips creators have attributed to me buying way more, and I experience FOMO. But this is completely my responsibility, not the creators. Truly, this is my responsibility, and I must take control of my purchasing habits. I've stopped watching creators who are getting free products to review because I personally don't trust reviews on free products anymore. But that's just me. I'm thankful for creators such as yourself because I really enjoy watching others who share my hobby and enjoy using their collections in an authentic way. Plus, I'm on the hunt for a dusty rose, and that opera rose is intriguing, and it was nice seeing it swatched in such a beautiful way.

    The good thing about ink is you can usually get samples. I may accumulate a lot of those, but it helps me only buy bottles that I know I will really love. Things I wind up with that I won’t use (samples, bottles I regretted, pens), I am going to pass on to someone who wants them. I don’t want to own a ton of stuff, but the urge to *try* all the things is in me whether I watch videos about it or not. 😂 Hopefully I wind up with a nice little curated collection.

    Sorry I'm late...
    Oh, I love that Opera rose. Those are my favorite inks: the ones that look like an old love letter. Ones I have that I have described that way are Colorverse Brunch Date, Colorverse Alpha Scorpii, Organics Studio Oscar's Copper, and Robert Oster Muddy Wine.
    Regarding the consumerism, I don't know, I worry about that a lot less when it's inks because a lot of people exchange samples like you do, and you're not necessarily buying that much. Also half the time I watch an ink video my thoughts go "Wow that's really pretty. I'm glad I got to see it. I would never use it" and then I don't buy it. When people review a lot of fountain pens, I'm grateful that I got to see them. I like to look. And yet it's often in the back of my head: "HOW MANY HANDS DO YOU HAVE?!" But then, many are on loan from pen stores. So I guess... I think it looks like more STUFF than it winds up being.

    I laughed out loud when you talked about "persimmon." Don't worry; we can all be patient. Old habits are hard to break. I dislike regular pink and dislike hot pink even more, but I'm always on the lookout for dusty, vintage pinks and the Opera Rose looks lovely. I'll be looking more closely at the Teranishi brand. As for your videos, I like the long, relaxed format. It's very calming and it doesn't feel rushed.

    Hi Liane! Awesome currently inked! You have some beautiful pairings. I’ve heard such great things about the Pilot e95s and it looks beautiful with the T+L Harvest Persimmon. Your swatching technique shows so many beautiful features of the ink. It’s amazing how similar some inks can look in the pen and how different they can look swatched out.

    Your ink sampling is beautiful! And just today I ordered the Herbin blotting paper and am very happy to see that it looks fine cut in half as I too will use in in an A6 Hobonochi Techo in 2023. The teranishi opera rose is not 100% Vintage. Vintage is anything 20 years old or older. The cornucopia of lovely ink colours has only started to grow in the last few decades. Does opera rose have a 100% retro feel about it yes.

    First of all, thank you for a very calming, soothing, enjoyable video, except for that part where I kept staring at the oxblood drop anxiously waiting for you to do something with it! Second, one thing I like about the ink aspect of fountain pens is precisely that it's a place to experiment without actually consuming a lot. I have been out of town for a couple of days so I am late in watching your videos. I also came back with the flu so I got even more delayed. I love your channel and love each one of your videos, although I don't make any comments, I watch them all as they are relaxing for me. The thing about consumerism, it's the responsibility of the viewers to what they should buy and shouldn't. I am a minimalist so I don't hoard everything that catches my attention, I am careful and intentional in my purchases. I only absolutely buy inks and pens after thorough research so my point is RUclipsrs definitely influence consumerism but it's not sth you should be held responsible for or feel guilty about. In answer to your question about whether your videos contribute to material culture, I like watching ink swatching videos as a way to get a look at how an ink behaves (and hearing how other people enjoy it) without having to purchase everything myself. Other ways to play with ink without feeling like you're encouraging consumerism: ink swaps with community members (which you clearly do), drawing or writing with the inks you have, comparing your experiences using specific inks or brands with other people's (whether you're talking with someone or trying to recreate a really cool style or craft you saw). It's all about using the ink collection you have rather than showing only the new inks you get, and encouraging watchers to do the same.

It's true that the videos are encouraging to consumerism one way I deal with those things is I write it down and wait for the next month and if I really still want it and it's in my hobbies budget, I'll buy it or cross it if I don't want it. You're not responsible for what the viewer does with their money and how wisely they spend it but it's good to know that it's in your mind. Just an observation, and it's not something I've noticed just with you. I hope it's okay that I'm asking.
    Do you ever feel sort of pushed for space while you're swatching...with all the stuff so close around you? I think it's meant to look nice, of course, but I always feel like it would be a bit claustrophobic having the "decor" around. It seems the candle and gourds and things so close to you would make it more difficult to work. You only have a tiny bit of space the size of the journal.
    I'm sure it's just my personal preference, but I have to have some space while I'm crafting or writing. I'm honestly wondering if you are doing it this way because so many people do and it seems expected...or if it's something you like and it doesn't bother you.
    This is such a silly question...but my mind always goes there when I see set-ups like this and you seem nice enough that you might not think I'm totally weird for asking.

    • @lianelikes
      @lianelikes  2 года назад +2

      This is a great question and I’m so glad you asked! For one, I love seeing this aesthetic in other videos and I find it so pleasing to try to have this cozy, autumnal theme, especially while it’s officially autumn. :) Also happens to be my favorite season, so I love to create a warm look in my videos. Secondly, what’s more confining in my videos is making sure that my crafting/swatching is within the bounds of the camera lens. The gourds and supplies “framing” my journaling actually helps me to make sure that my content stays on screen! But when I journal and play with inks off camera, I typically create on a more spacious setting. Hope that answers some pf your curiosities!

    • @beccacarrillo
      @beccacarrillo 2 года назад +1

      @@lianelikes I never thought of it as a way to keep yourself "in frame". That makes a lot of sense. I was thinking of it from a sense of just crafting, not of filming. Thanks for the explanation. :) (P.S. I do like the look of your pretty setting!)
