  • Watercolor pencil painting can be confusing for a beginner, this is why I teamed up with my son Andy to do a demonstration of a beginner apple versus a more advanced one. You will see exactly what common mistakes beginners make with watercolor pencils, and how to avoid them!

Yes it was frustrating, classic watercolor pencil story for beginners 😁

Hi, Francoise. This was interesting - like Andy, I learned the hard way, because back then w/c pencils weren't used so much. Having learned the hard way, I worked out the better way, and subsequently, when teaching, teach those things.
But how does Andy feel now? It must have been very hard for him to be filmed in this way? Please thank him for me, for being willing to help us out, and for allowing you to use the film here on RUclips.

Thank you for asking! It's actually the fourth time we do a video like this and he seems to enjoy it despite he has some perfectionism going like his mom and gets frustrated if he can't get it as he wants. He's not one to just do it and call it a day but instead takes his time, I think it shows in the video when he was trying to fix things.
He likes short infrequent collabs like these but I don't expect to bug him too often with it 🙂
His dad draws pretty well too so he has some natural abilities I've found but is more into other things like the guitar and reading.
I have made 2 other videos with his teenage cousin, my niece,m. Those kids have been a great support for me personally (they're also more into RUclips and online things than older people in the fam).

@@paintingandchocolate Thank you for the reply, Françoise! It was evident form the video that he has some natural abilities, and it was more a lack of understanding the techniques needed than his ability. In one way, it was strange watching his hands doing exactly the same things that I did when I first began with w/c pencils!!!
So this is one reason why I really appreciated his participation, because it will help so many others, far more than any ordinary 'how to' video could do.
      Again, thank you both!!!
      😊
(PS, if my English sounds a little odd in places, it's because I've been teaching in both languages this morning! The subject wasn't an apple, but a pair of shoes.)

@@annenglish2935 Not difficult, just a little different. Maybe get out your pencils and follow the video as it goes along? Andy's mistakes are simply not knowing all the techniques, just as mine were at first, and now you have a very big advantage, because you can see his mistakes and Françoise's explanations in her demonstration. Bon courage!!! 😊
