It was looking fantastic. It wasn't your workmanship that was at fault. If you'd had more time before the show you could have redone it yourself and got a great result. I painted my XJR and when the base coat had initially cured for a few days, I had no time constraints so I brought it into the house and left it in the spare room for a week. The heat in the house cured it fully but the smell in the room as it cured was really strong. The Missus wasn't too impressed. Keep the faith.
Benn there, done that, it's frustrating but it's also a learning experience. There's a lot more to a good paint job that meets the eye. Don't beat yourself up about it, spray painting is not easy if you want good results and you'll know more for next time. Cheers

know the feeling bud, redid my tank and just got standard Lacquer not even knowing there was special stuff, was so chuffed how it came out first time painting anything like that....filled tank and it just melted the lot. and your right appreciate the total honesty, its actually this vid that allowed me to find the right lacquer so I feel ya

I think you did a great job with the setup you had and it would have been pretty good had it not been for the reaction of the paints. I've also had a few paint disasters over the years so you're not alone.
I just did mine, Got all the way through a candy blue to clearcoat stage snd then saw the putty / filler had surfaced through the primer and candy. Money down the drain, effort doen the drain... start over hahaha Emotional rollercoaster.

Oh No , That happened to me once and since then i ALWAYS do the sniff test , The slightest wiff of solvent on the paint means it's still setting (venting) then l just leave it alone before a top coat, It can take days l really feel for you my friend .
I so have been there Euan.... my achilles-heel was WD-40 ruining my first paintjob on my GS450. And then the wrong type of clearcoat F-ed up the second and third paintjob. So I know the feeling. Painting is a skill i so underestimated. Hope all comes together before bikeshed!
Painting can be hit and miss. I used a heat gun to help dry some rattle can paint and clear coat and the clear coat had a similar reaction. I haven’t used a heat gun since. I’m not an experienced painter and just a thought.

After painting a few bikes in my time I applaud you for having a go. Especially with rattle cans. You did an amazing job, experience lets you know when you can clear or paint the next coats. I was very surprised with the finish ( until it went tits up) that you achieved. Don’t give up, it’s a skill worth learning. I have watched your videos for a long time now and you have progressed immensely along the years so a messed up paint job is just another kick in the pants and a step or two forward. We are there for you, some times happy, sometimes sad, but you are our guy. I love your projects and I wish you good luck with all the present and future ones. Damn, that's a real shame! Yeah, painting is one of those things that is just so precarious and controlling the environment is key. What is the solution to avoiding this happening in future? Longer cure time on the base coats?
So it would still have worked, if you had given it more time to dry, before clearcoat? Must be difficult to predict, if you can't control the temperature and humidity.
2k base coat is dry in 20 to 30 mins per coat, so 3 coats in 60 to 90 mins then 2k clear same per coat. It's ur high build that's caused ur problems, you needed to seal it with a coat of etch then apply ur base and clear. Do urself a favour and bin the rattle cans, you've got a compressor, get a mini gun and some quality paint and you will not look back, also always try and have ur spray set up at 20 degrees c, if you can👍

It's rated for painting fumes and chemicals like acids and alkalis. Fresh air isn't hugely necessary if you're not doing it regularly. If you can't smell the paint through the mask, it's not doing you too much harm. That said, overalls and gloves are important too as isocyanate can be absorbed through the skin.
Just always impressed by how you always give it a go and that's not something you can take away. As you said, nothing ventured nothing gained!

The cracking is my usual outcome. Make sure that the primer is completely dry. And wear rubber gloves.. Learning is hard eh. Keep at it mate.

I know it's a pain, but wear gloves when masking, it helps save adhesion issues later. Good job so far though...

I believe maybe. But there may also have been an issue with the base coat can as it didn't cure in the time frame it's meant to.

Was that respirator you were using sufficient for 2K paints? I thought you needed fresh air supply for using 2K?
