This is fantastic. I worked in radio for 25 years and got this exact advice from respected Program Directors in major markets. ESPECIALLY addressing the audience as individuals and not "guys", bullet points rather than scripts, talking through a smile and gesture to punctuate your words. All we had was audio, but good practices in broadcasting apply to all platforms.

How to address to viewers depends on what kind of feeling you want to create, I guess. Addressing them as one individual probably creates a more intimate atmosphere, while you "guys" may evoke the feeling of belonging to a community.

So true. I co-piloted the front desk at career services for a major university my freshman year. The phones (pre-mobile era) were always jammed with CEOs trying to get through to their recruiters or set up an event. The lady in charge of the desk had worked there about 30 years. The only advice she gave me was "smile when you answer. They can hear a smile, and it sets the tone."

Practice Practice Practice, i vlog every where i go, walmart, the grocery store, hiking, i rarely use this footage but helps me get comfortable talking to the camera and doing it in crowds, people do stare but that’s ok, sometimes people recognize me an stop and say hi, that’s ok too. The more i practice, when i sit down to do a talking head, i look into the camera better and look much more relaxed and comfortable like im just talking to a friend on teh couch. Practice is the only way to get better in crowds. When i set up my tripod to film doing self checkout at walmart, while talking to camera, people watch, and are like , what a narcissistic weirdo, but that ok too, this is the world we live in. And by the way, im 60 years old. Old dogs can learn new tricks, haha.. great video, lots of great tips, but i think everyone can improve their on camera personality and delivery to make it more entertaining. Forget about analytics, just make better videos, be more engaging and entertaining. Some people are naturals, im not at all, it has taken 4 years of weekly videos to improve a little be with each one. Love this topic. Larry

@@l.e.phillips i have had some great conversations with people that started with, what’s with the camera.. i was at Lowe’s yesterday day and had an vlog setup with a small light, that really gets people’s attention, so far i rarely have a bad experience except for once at a national park visitor center from a ranger, finally she had to admit i was allowed to film inside the ranger station. It’s so common these days, when people ask why I am vloggging i tell them my channel, they usually look it up right there and subscribe its funny. Larry

I've suggested to new creators to get in the habit of recording the formalities and simple editing them out in post. It's helpful to get it off their chest and continue. Some people are just setting up the stage for talking points but most don't understand editing is where the magic happens. ❤👍

Great advice! What helped me the most in becoming comfortable talking to my weird one-eyed friend was live streaming. If you hang out in front a camera talking to actual people behind the camera as in a live stream then when you switch to a standard shoot it's easier to imagine a human behind the lens.

Sean - this may be a little off topic but would be interested in your processes prior to writing your bullet point script and in defining what and how you are going to shoot a scene. Do you have a list you continue to add to regarding topics for future videos. How long is your list? How do you prioritize which one you make next? Do you work on more than one video at a time or only one at a time from start to finish? Once you have an idea what is your process to come up with the script/story? How many takes to get what you want? Have you ever worked on a video and then deleted because you didn't think it was "working"? How did you decide "it isn't working"? How well are you able to tell prior to posting whether a video will be popular? Are there times you compromise what/how you would like to shoot a scene because of some constraint: time, tired, bored, etc. How long do you let an idea for a video roll around in your help before you start working on it? I am not looking for you to answer this comment just wanted you to understand what is rolling around in one of your fans head and what might turn into a video in the future. Take care and keep the videos coming, they all help!

Just beginning my journey and love these tips. Do you brainstorm video ideas or do they just come to you?
