7 Days On The Spanish Part 1 - Late fall canoe trip down the Spanish River

- Part one in a series of three.
A wild canoe journey on the Spanish River in October 2018.
Cold temperatures and high water keep Jason Irwin and Jordan Walmsley on their toes, as they solo two big river canoes down this ancient waterway.

Well you certainly had us on the edge of our seat for episode 1. Thats quite the trip Jason. Enjoyed the narration and storytelling.
Thanks!
Cool fade with the sparks of the fire. I wasn't sure what was going on for a second. Fun watching the excitement of paddlers who don't travel much whitewater--I'm in the same boat.
Yeah that was a freaky fade... just a straight fade too, no effects. I kind of wish I had a longer sparks shot so that fade could have been longer (for added trippy factor!)
Nice one Jason. Perfect to watch while I'm home sick with the flu. Cheers.
Thanks man... flu is better now than at ice out!. Hope you feel better.
I love our northern environment it’s absolutely magical 💜
Seriously, 3.5k subs with this high production quality? Needs to be 3.5m! Nice trip and great edit!
Thanks buddy! I'm glad you appreciate the time and effort.
Couldn't be truer..
I agree Jason is a legend. Some of the best videos I’ve seen.

This is another one of those undiscovered gems on RUclips. Glad I found it. Great content.
Thanks Tyler!
Might have to add Spanish River to the bucket list. Awesome work as always.
Thank you.
My palms get sweaty watching the last 10 minutes of this one. And it's not the first time I've watched it either... 😆
Yeah me too!
@@JasonIrwinTumblehome just rewatched all of your trips this past weekend. Anything being released in 2020? Can't get enough! I really dig your style, you capture everything great about canoe tripping.
Impressive as always. Absolutely love your videos! Cheers!
Thanks!
I caught myself smiling halfway through! Awesome as always!
Thanks man. Are you heading back to the French River any time?
@@JasonIrwinTumblehome I'm still in the "what trips this year" phase of the winter (isn't that dreaming/planning part fun?), but I always make it there at least once a year, sometimes twice. It's home, in a way, and I enjoy revisiting old tucked away spots that I haven't been to in a long time, and trying to find new ones in the delta. So, yes, I will for sure this year. I have mixed feelings about going to see the fire area specifically, but I also feel like I need to.
A nice February treat. Looked like some nice water, not too much of a rush but enough to get you thinking.
Thanks bud. It definitely had me thinking :-) ... bit above my pay grade but I never felt too freaked out.
We hit a nasty pocket in part 3!
thank you for taking me with you on the journey.
What an amazing journey! Excellent edit.
dude your awesome . great content!!! keep it up!!
thanks!
This video came at a perfect time, Jason. The end of winter always brings cabin fever. I’ve watched many videos over and over. This new offering from you really hit the spot. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Thanks Richard. I'm relieving my cabin fever with the Justin Barbour series right now. Part two out in a couple days.
Tumblehome, thanks for the response. Yes, I have been checking Justin out for a while now. For a complete 180° turn I’ve also been watching Coyote Works. Still prefer you, Joe, and Doug though.
Another awesome series, so glad you shared the drive road rapids section with us. I think you did quite well given your confidence level. Pure adrenaline for sure!
Thank you. I need to take a whitewater course!
Wow, what a video. Throughly enjoyed that..you had me on the edge a little.
Thought you were gonna get very wet at one point.
It must have been thrilling doing that.
Yeah that was a bit of a crazy trip... getting wet would have been a challenge for sure. I was glad that we went in separate boats in case one of us went in. We both came close on that big "hidden" boulder. :-)
Once again, a pure quality video. Your work is a ton of fun to watch. Thanks for the entertainment. Great stuff!
Thanks David... very kind of you to say.
I am planning a late September trip to Algonquin. I am hoping that it works out for me. Having a ton of fun looking at all the options.
@@davidcloutier6771 Best time for that Park IMO :-)
Not sure why but I ended up getting fed these 3 in reverse order...but I loved all 3! You sure had an amazing journey.
Thanks!
Awesome. So much fun. My wife and I love watching the videos. Can‘t wait for the next ones.
Thanks alot for sharing.
Greetings from Germany
Hey thanks a bunch! Really glad you like the videos. I have met quite a few folks visiting from Germany while in Algonquin Park.
Tumblehome i totally can see that. I actually used to live in BC for quite some time. I just missed the canoeing part because of all the work.
Brother man... You know how to leave 'em wanting more.
Another excellent adventure, I await with bated breath the next installments.
Thanks Nathan. Part 2 coming on Thursday!
Fantastic video Jason - the camera mount on the rear of the canoe works flawlessly for those shots going down the rapids - can't wait for part 2!!
Thank you! Yeah I find the stabilization on the Go Pro to be 75% amazing and 25% annoying. Mounted on the back of the canoe it does a hell of a good job... it likes good light and a big obvious horizon. I doesn't handle panning too well but forward motion is good.
Really enjoying your videos, looking forward to the rest of this journey. Please don't make us wait too long!
Ok thanks Alex! I should have the other one up in a couple days... 3 parts / one a week. I figured folks don't have time for 75 mins all at once any more :-). I know I don't.
I was with you all the way there - not one dull moment. Hey that was a big slab of meat in camp but needed I guess for the rapids the next day. You guys did well. You said you learned something but you passed through like pro's. Good going. I'm gonna watch the whole episode now. All the best. Mark (England)
Thanks Mark!
Awesome Mr Irwin.. thank you for posting and hope you don't mind but I may watch this again later. And on the weekend.. a few times. (Niagara)
Thanks Brian. Re-watch till your heart is content! Did that sound like a lame grab for views?
@@JasonIrwinTumblehome haha ..nope. But I will happily oblige and tell a few friends if you don't mind. The E. Great Lakes hammock folks (from Hammock forums) are watching too since you're like a local celeb to us.
@@brianj9635 Oh yeah... Billions of fans as I tell my wife all the time. ;-)
Great video Jason. A trip on my list for years, classic Grey Owl country. You guys did great, thanks for sharing!
Thanks Jamie!
Enjoyed very much, well done.... The water level looks perfect..
Thanks Jim. I suppose that is the optimum level for fun. It caught us off guard a bit but luckily we managed to stay in / on top of the boats. We did come very close to a swim near the end... Part 3!
Great video As usual. Looks like the makings of a great trip! Looking forward to the rest of the trip vids.
Thank you!
And once again your standards for video, editing and narration are phenomenal . Not to mention selecting a trip and time of the year that is challenging. My last trip in this area was 20 year ago and you captured many of the scenes that I held onto in my memories. Our water was high also but a much warmer trip. Your videos are so well done and I applaud your skill and results. Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words! Glad its sparking some memories... I love seeing other videos of places I've been.
Excellent! Looking forward to Part 2.
Thank you! ...Part two this Thursday.
Looks like a blast. Its been added to my to-do list for sure. Thanks for the great editing and all the information you share about the route. Ive been taking notes to help prepare for my trip. Now please, hurry up and share the rest of it. :) lol. Thanks man!!
Thanks a buch Steve. I'm glad you are using as reference for a future trip!... big part of why I do it.
Its not only informative but good entertainment with you and your buddies like Scott. Adds good comedy to the mix. Thanks again.
Good times. Looking forward to the rest of your trip.
Thanks bud! Part two coming this week!
Enjoyed this one too... crikey it gets cold over there in Oct. Cracking first set of fast water there, looked fun. Sort of reassuring to know that you admitted that you weren't that skilled in white water, I thought all Canadian paddlers were hardcore in the extreme! Lovely river & scenery.
I learned that I need to take a course!
Looks like an epic trip. Looking forward to the rest!
Part 2 up on Thursday! Thanks Larry.
I think you and Larry need to do a trip together. Both film it, then make one epic video. 😂

Awesome vid man! Those Rapids looked like a lot of fun but surely a bit sketchy!!! Great stuff n looking forward to part 2!! Cheers 🍻🍻
Thank you. I think I would have portaged that big set if we had taken a proper look at them before hand... particularly that one section :-)
Great video. Enjoyed watching. My group is looking for a great river to do. This one looks awesome
Thank you! The Spanish is wild for sure. I'm looking forward to doing it in the late summer some time.
Well done, Looks like a fantastic trip.
Thanks Troy
Nice one! Great stuff. I can see why you were a bit nervous in those rapids at those temperatures. Taking a plunge wouldn’t be fun at all. Can’t wait for following episodes.
Thanks! Yup.. probably wouldn't do it in those temps again... came very close to dumping in Part 3!
Tumblehome Did you take precautions for that eventuality, such as a quick fire starting kit? I canoe/camp with my wife and kids in remote area’s of Sweden (sometimes in France but there’s always a town or roadnetwork nearby) and can get a bit overzealous with safety issues. This results in doubling up on lighters, clothing, tarps, food, etc, adding to the overall weight... Better safe than sorry I guess...
@@krijnkrijn Yes for sure... always a dry set in the waterproof bag. Quick fire start is in the PFD. Always open to other ideas about that kind of thing.
Great video as always, cant wait for Part 2!
Thank you. Part two coming soon!
Enjoyable so far, gorgeous scenery!
Wow awesome video Jason, just came back from doing the same branch ,unfortunately it was low water, and Dog road rapids was a kilometer of boulder gardens in june.
Yeah we kind of lucked out with those high water conditions... sure glad we didn't dump!
Awesome trip looking forward to more videos of the trip Thanks
No problem and thanks Earl.
Your videos are awesome man. Just subscribed! I hope to make it up to Ontario sometime this year or the next.
Thanks buddy!
Inspiring trip videos man. Keep them coming
Thanks Ryan.
Fantastic production brother! Got the popcorn ready for the next episodes! Had some butterflies there. Lol.
Haha... you and me both! Thanks Mike.
Wow, nicely filmed! the spanish is a spectacular place, spent some time camping and fishing on a trib of the spanish, I think near gordon's chute. Beautiful time! Subbed.
Thankyou!
Like always. Epic. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks bro!
Can't wait to see the rest of this!
Thanks Andy! Part two in a couple of days. :-)
New Tumblehome content calls for Friday night viewing and champagne! Well worth the wait. Thanks for the superb viewing. Cheers!
Classy! Thanks.
great job lads,, Looking forward to more!
Thanks bud! Not much bird action on this trip but there are a few good bits in Part 2... nothing exotic per say but some classic squawks and chirps!
Tumblehome beauty, thanks, late fall like that is a quiet bird time for sure, some owls perhaps, I’ll be watching and listening. 💪🇨🇦👍
Great vid. I love the Fall colours of your late season canoe trips. Not sure I would have tried to take a 17' canoe, solo, on my 1st WW river but hey, if it works for ya :-)
Thanks Bob. No doubt there was a foolish element to our adventure. Originally we thought we would have 15 footers and that the water was going to be low (more portaging / lining etc) When we realized we had the bigger boats we briefly debated taking just one, but with neither of us knowing much about the skill level of the other we opted for separate. I think it was probably safer to have two boats so the dry warm guy can start the fire for the cold wet guy :-) We came really close to having a swim... both of us... part 3!
I need to take a white water course.
@@JasonIrwinTumblehome, as someone who has taken my share of swims on WW I'm certainly not going to judge your decisions. I think a WW course is a really good idea but certainly one that deals with rescues can never be overestimated. What you wear is also important and a dry suit can also give a lot of confidence as it eliminates the fear of hypothermia.
Hey Tumble. Incredible videos, incredible shots. I also love the choice of music here. Really great. Motivates me to start editing videos myself :D
Thanks much!
Just too boss! videography included.
Mate, you make quality quality videos..... You should do this full time 👍
Thanks John, I put a lot of work into them for sure :-) ... labor of love.
I work at CBC doing promos and various video production so I'm in the biz I guess you could say. I don't know if I could handle doing the whole social media thing full time... don't know if I'm cut out for it (to be successful). I feel lucky that I can make these little films for fun and not feel the pressure of it being a job.
Yeah man I understand, a few folk I follow on RUclips have all said, what was once a pleasure thing turned in to, for lack of a better word, a chore, with everything involved 🤔 so your probably better off mate ha! Anyways, you keep making them and I'll keep watching them. Great stuff 👍
Awesome!
Wow, extremely well edited! I love floating rivers. I traded my canoe for a Marlin 30/30, ive missed it ever since. I've gotta get a new one this summer. Killer good video man 💯👍
Thanks bud! Glad you appreciate the cutting.
Loved it!
Thank you.
Outstanding!
Thanks!
Love the trip guys! I wanted to rig a GoPro at the stern just like you did there, but wanted to ask how to were able to do it in your boat?
The GP was mounted on a telescoping aluminum pole (window washing pole)
I have some permanent set ups in my boats but in this rental I just wedged the pole bottom with a pack and lashed an upper portion to the canoe carry handle. It wasn't perfect but it did the trick.
Excellent thanks! I have some suction cups I may try in the royalex. Keep on paddling!
Hey! Great video, second tie watching.. which outfitter did you use? I'm going to do this route in the next yr or two. Thanks
I can't remember the name of the outfitter actually... sorry. I do remember it being fairly pricey in the end :-( ... extra shuttle at the end didn't help any. :-)
Oh boy. This sounds like a recipe for disaster. Yikes. Hope it all goes well. Now for Part 2!
Nice boats. Interesting that they are 17s. Lots of buoyancy. Did you bring your own paddle?
Yeah we had our own paddles. Our outfitter had told us there were 15's available but all they had were 17's when we arrived :-(. We thought about going tandem but decided we might be safer with two boats in case of a dump in those chilly temps.
@@JasonIrwinTumblehome paddles are more personal than boats
@@scottengh1175 agree!
good job Jason¡
Thanks Daniel!
What outfitters did you use. Did you take the train from Cartier. We did it in the he spring and got eaten alive by mosquitoes. I would have preferred the cold
I cant recall the outfitter name but it was on the big lake at the end of the route.
Just wondering why you went with 17' boats? It didn't seem like you had a ton of gear. I own a 17 footer and it wouldn't be my first choice for a solo trip. What am I missing?
Hi Terry,
our understanding when we talked to the outfitter was that they had 15' boats as well but when we arrived they only had 17's. Boooo! We briefly entertained the idea of going in one boat (which probably would have been fine) but we opted for two boats for a bit more fun and maybe a bit safer in the even of a dump (one cold wet paddler rather than two). Part of me wishes we had done one boat as we probably would have made it all the way. Live and learn.
Stellar.
Do you use a lapel mic or anything? The audio sounds really good.
Actually, can you do a video talking about you recording setup?
@@northerncollections966 I may do a little vid about the cams etc... just haven't been out in the boats yet this year. Hopefully this fall though. I mostly use the on camera mics and then sweeten the audio in post. On this trip though I did have a small Rhodes unit on the DSLR sometimes... so much better with a wind sock!
Awesome! I wish I had your skill in video making... Did you have a new wide angle lens? How do you get the audio so good with the go pro when you're facing away?
Thanks Mark. I didn't get a new lens but the Go Pro is a Hero 6 (fairly new) and I mostly keep it set on "linear" to avoid the warped edges. I didn't use the SLR too much but when I did I had the kit lens on there 24-105.
From which outfitter did you rent your canoes?
Sorry! I've forgotten the name and kind find any reference to it in my files. It was a lodge, we both parked and launched from there.
What software do you use to draw the yellow route line on the map image?
I did the map animation in After Effects
@@JasonIrwinTumblehome : Thanks for the info. Your video work is really first class. What file format and resolution do you upload to RUclips to get such a high quality final product?
@@seattleboatguy I use Media Encoder to get my final file for RUclips upload (1080p). The only thing I change in the preset is to bump up the bitrate to 30mbps (its usually at 15 for YT presets)
Why did you name your channel tumble home friend?
I just thought it sounded nice :-) Rolls off the tongue and its canoe related.
👍👍👍
Thanks!
👌
😍😍😍 I love your videos. Will you narrate my videos? You could be the “Mike Rowe” of outdoor RUclips videos.
Ha Ha. You should hear my "promo guy" voice. If I wasn't so poor at selling myself I'd probably be doing for a living.
So glad you are still digging the vids!
A modern day Bill Mason!
Thanks Christopher, he was way ahead of his time. I still watch his films periodically despite having seen them so often.
@@JasonIrwinTumblehome Just watched Song of the Paddle again . Honestly, I know it was 1977 and there weren't a lot of folks out there doing that at that time, but now it's a bit dated. Like watching the first Star Wars film and comparing to the recent releases. Your videos at 4k, the sound and voice overs (combined with graphics) really make it more watchable. If he had the same tools of 2019, sure it would be better... . Keep doing what you do ... its appreciated. At least until April, then I can get outside again! Winter has been pretty long here and I'm ready for it to be over and warm up! Until then, we're having a Tumblehome film festival!
