I have this exact setup and use it whenever I'm offroading. It's my most important piece of safety/ survival equipment. Having a Satellite Phone from NorthernAxcess keeps me in contact with any cell or landline telephone on earth.
NorthernAxcess is among the best repair + customer service in the industry. Been using my Iridium 9575 Extreme Satellite Phone I got from NorthernAxcess 7 years. Never go off-road without it.
do i need a specialized sim card for sat phones or can i use my normal sim(at&t, t-mobile, etc) ? another question is what happens when that sim card expired for example, an iridium sim. can i reactivate it with the same number anytime?

Yah...but the antenna is like $6000 dollars!!!! and the phone is only $500. Not really but you get the point. I just dont see why the car antenna is so damn expensive, It is killing the phone sales. I would like to get into this, but the cost of the antenna is stopping me.
I have a Iridium Extreme 9575 Satphone just like this, and YES it a unique kit and in some situations it is indispensable. Great that it is available. But it has too many silly shortcomings! The Iridium network only works from a position of a clear sky, not under a roof but that is the "nature of the Iridium Beast". The Iridium satellites spins around and the quality depend if you can lock on a good satellite nearby. So sometimes you need to wait 10 or 20 minutes. The worst with this is the the 30 year old and strangely outdated phone technology! Back to the past blue-black back-lit pixel screens and tap tap tap interface of yore. The American tech companies are making so "not today" phones. The screen is shit (sorry, but true...) and all connections are puny weak and vulnerable "dumb special" connections. No standard USB connectors to be seen for charging for example. Some of the phone connectors must be seen to be believed, absolute crap and the most serious risk. Of course the accessories use different voltage! What good is a phone you can't charge due to a snapped plug? You Must be very careful when you charge it because if it moves or drop when charging you are done. With my experience I would personally chose a 2-way Iridium "hot-spot" unit that is able to connect to a "real" phone via BT. The sound quality is very poor due to EXTREME voice data compression. Again this is like 30-40 years olden phones, but the "excuse" is that it is a global satellite device. This 9575 phone can send messages but it is like 20 - 30 years ago, click click click click click click click click click click click click. Think long and hard before you choose!!
