Hi Gavin, I have the same sat phone and use a Telstra sim not on a sat plan. Just so you know, it can’t be a prepaid sim so I change mine between a casual $20 a month and pre paid as I need it and you have to enable international roaming as calls via iridium come back to the phone network from satellites via the USA. Has to be Telstra as they have an arrangement with iridium so Optus etc are no good. After a couple of trips I’ve done, I would also take an Optus sim that I could change into my normal phone for when there is no Telstra phone service so then not having to pay sat call rates if I need to make a call. Love the video’s, be great to see one on your camera gear used and what you use to edit. Keep it up, Cheers Chris
Hi Christopher. I just checked with Telstra and they can't guarantee a GSM sim will work on the satellite network so everybody should satisfy themselves it's possible, particularly if they are headed into the boon-docks!! One option is to buy the phone and hire a sim - Telstra mail out a sim for the period of time you specify and the number is yours for that period (discard sim after use). Costs e.g. 2 weeks AUD60 or AUD90 for 1 month (no included calls!!). Would be interested to know if anybody has found a better casual plan?
I have the Thuraya SG-2520 and use it all over the World, Africa, Europe, Asia and home in the bush. Never had any issues and the quality is perfect every time. Spot on with the EPIRB, great kit but as you say a time and a place. The phone is the way forward mate. Great video Gav, cheers Moose.
Hi Moosedownunder, was considering the Thuraya until I read they don't work in NZ - the network is not worldwide and excludes the North and South Pole, lol!!! Just thought I would give folks a heads-up before they purchase. Ciao.

It's fine for making calls to anywhere, as I have that same Satellite Phone from Northern Axcess. However, it is difficult to receive calls as those calling from a regular land phone must make the call as if it were an international call. Lots of cell phone carries cannot do that. I use mine in the Nevada wilderness and it works perfectly :|
You CAN as previous commenter indicated, get a US phone number for an extra $10 per month. There is ZERO need to dial like a international call, but instead dial like a regular US long distance call (1, area code, phone number).... got one of these for my grandmother since her landline carrier doesn't give a crap about her landline not working every time it rains. Have had zero issue calling her normally, and she has had ZERO issue using and receiving phone calls. Hope that helps man.
Great review thanks Gavin. I'm perplexed that it will take days to get help on the Canning Stock Route. Really??? Thought Australia was better equiped than this. If this is true then a PLB is a better choice since COSPAS-SARSAT work on the principle of assisting rescuers locating survivors within the "golden day" (within 24 hours of a traumatic event) - the period when the majority of people survive. Just a thought! It's a complicated business settling on the right Sat phone & plan - sound advice buying it outright. Conventional wisdom suggests travelling/hiking with a sat phone and EPIRB/PLB . Ciao.

Well explained, Gavin. What are your thoughts on something like a SPOT where you can't converse but can send short SMSs?
Chris Ross I think the SPOT trackers are fantastic. The SMSs you can send are pre written so a little more limited but it will still do the most necessary of jobs and do them well.
I have been thinking of using a SatPhone recently and have been using a Spot Gen 3 device for a couple of years. I have the device set up and configured to send my 4WD coordinates to the Spotwalla mapping platform for when I work remote in the bush. This is so I can record & auto- map all my travels but more importantly, to allow friends and family to track my whereabouts at all times through a browser should something go awry. Works perfectly ...however the Satphone would be that next level of security & comms again.
How much does it cost?
What about after a major disater?

It works regardless. It's not a regular cellphone and uses NO towers.... goes DIRECTLY to the Satellites in space... unless those satellites are down (Iridium has 66 in orbit with one DIRECTLY overhead every 6 minutes and they use sideband for handoff to next closest satellite to avoid dropped calls) you WILL get your call out or in!! You need clear view of sky, and if using indoors a dock is recommended with an external antenna, otherwise if you're outdoors with clear view of sky you're fine. US special forces use this as backup comms throughout the world. hope that helps.
For some, it might make better sense to rent one when needed.
Hi iviewthetube, this makes sense if you use it say once a year. Many of the plans I considered were cheaper to pay for an annual plan if you were to use it for 3 months or more. Also, best to read the fine print re early exit and pausing a plan. Like mobile phones the providers are looking for an annual spend - for these phones it appears to be a steep $600!!! Ciao
The 9505A was able to have an encrypted sleeve that would attach to the back in place of the normal plastic battery cover, it would provide secure voice! is this model capable?
Hi Chris, you would need to speak with the manufacturer. I have no need for secure voice communications so havent looked for something like that.
I need the answer to this too!! From my research the iridium 9575a (military version) 1000% has some top security encryption that can be enabled. Still trying to find out more as the 9575a is rather expensive and hard to find.

I paid Telstra $35pm with $10pm free call @$2.50per minute for 13 years for my Motorola 9500. I then cancelled it for two months and changed my mind to reinstate it and am being forced back on to a 24month contract plan of $35pm. No goodwill here. Alternatively one can buy a $90pm 30 day usage SIM card. I have been bush since without my Motorola and feel naked out there. My EPIRB gives no solace, as you concur :-(
Willem Kempen Ahh I feel your pain. Hopefully someone comes up with a better solution using VoIP in the future.
Look at pivotel, i have my Iridium 9555 with them, can do no contracts and has aus mobile no for free incoming calls.

It's not waterproof, it's "IP65", which means it should withstand a gentle spray, but it won't withstand being submerged. If you can't drop it in water, it's not waterproof.
Hello, i have a question. Is it normal when the antenna is extended that the antenna shakes/moves a little bit?

@@GavinGillett oh i think mine is the same. Its not a big wiggle (maybe 1-2mm), but when i put the phone to the ear i can feel how the antena wiggles a little bit. I was worried that something was wrong. Thank you for your helo

Yes they can :D At least that's as far as i'm aware but I believe it also depends on the account you choose.

I have a Iridium Extreme 9575 Satphone just like this, and YES it a unique kit and in some situations it is indispensable. Great that it is available. But it has too many silly shortcomings! The Iridium network only works from a position of a clear sky, not under a roof but that is the "nature of the Iridium Beast". The Iridium satellites spins around and the quality depend if you can lock on a good satellite nearby. So sometimes you need to wait 10 or 20 minutes. The worst with this is the the 30 year old and strangely outdated phone technology! Back to the past blue-black back-lit pixel screens and tap tap tap interface of yore. The American tech companies are making so "not today" phones. The screen is shit (sorry, but true...) and all connections are puny weak and vulnerable "dumb special" connections. No standard USB connectors to be seen for charging for example. Some of the phone connectors must be seen to be believed, absolute crap and the most serious risk. Of course the accessories use different voltage! What good is a phone you can't charge due to a snapped plug? You Must be very careful when you charge it because if it moves or drop when charging you are done. With my experience I would personally chose a 2-way Iridium "hot-spot" unit that is able to connect to a "real"
phone via BT. The sound quality is very poor due to EXTREME voice data compression. Again this is like 30-40 years olden phones, but the "excuse" is that it is a global satellite device. This 9575 phone can send messages but it is like 20 - 30 years ago, click click click click click click click click click click click click. Think long and hard before you choose!!
You sound like you've had a bad experience with Iridium or are a competitor... used/currently use this phone and service and no issues with sound quality. as for texting... you REALLY gonna text much instead of call? outside of respond to a text or text where you can be heard talking (dire circumstances) you're not likely to text much. Phone screen you don't like? it's NOT an iPhone man!!!! it's meant for ONE purpose and one purpose ONLY, which is to allow the most BASIC of communications ANYWHERE in the world where there is NO cell towers. as for your "wait 20 minutes"... that's not true man, an outright lie.... Iridium has 66 satellites, low earth orbit, and one is DIRECTLY overhead every 6 MINUTES, plus they use sideband frequencies to ensure satellite handoff to the next closest satellite when the one overhead is getting out of range. Most you will wait during certain instances is 6 minutes.....if you're indoors and saying this, well that's why they say you need a dock with an EXTERNAL sat phone antenna (easy enough fix). Connectors proprietary is true to an extent, however have used a universal connector of right voltage and size plug to charge phone in a jam. Connections aren't "puny/weak" anymore than a regular cell phone (i.e. micro USB, USB-C, and Lightning, and when using a dock they're damn solid. If you're abusing the phone, you're gonna have problems no matter what you choose....this is issued "KIT" to numerous military units and paramilitary units around the world, yes I would know. NO accessories vary from the 5V standard (for USB type accessories) so not sure your claim there unless using some sort of CHI-COM knockoff (Wish) accessory. As for your "solution of choice" to use the Iridium hotspot...shows you either don't know much, are illogical, or just have no experience with this phone. You would still be using the SAME satellites for the hotspot, and your phone would be subject to international calling rates (whereas with this one... depending on country and plan) does NOT have the international calling rates. plus in the situation this is made for, your "real" phone would be damaged/unusable, this will still work. It's not a luxury, this is a piece of kit...that means something to keep you ALIVE in an emergency!!! You want a "real phone" (i.e. iPhone or other smart phone) then 1. DON'T leave where there is a cellular network or 2. accept if you leave a cellular network you will not have "luxury" communications and therefore don't travel/work remotely. So for those who read his crap, and have read my reply.... take my advice of what this is designed for, and who typically uses it (those working in harsh enviornements with a basic need for comms, and military/paramilitary using it to supplement when their radio comms are down).
