Hey chez, I picked up the sax in mid 2016, played a lot for a while and I now only play on and off maybe once a week. But I learnt the sax pritty much entirely through your vids, I made a little jamming track ( It's completely raw and unedited ) but you should give it a listen, it's just on the spot thought of as I was playing so not that good but still. I'd love if you could give it a listen, regards Luke.😊

That was certainly helpful chez! I started playing a couple months ago after i quitted 4 years ago. I really like playing again, but struggled with exactly this problem. Could you do a video on how to find out what is a good reed thickness for you, when is a reed too soft are too hard? That would be awesome

Hi Chez. I started using the rejuvinate system on my cane reeds a year or 2 back. Really it's just a humidity box with listerine but it keeps the reeds sanitised and because they're not always drying out I find they last much longer.

Ooh! I love this idea! Never heard of it. I'll write to them and see if they'll give me one to review. Do you have a link? Cx

You can get them at Sax et al. Link below. I just use a tenor so have three reeds on the go; my favourite (that's probably just starting to be too long on the tooth), one I've played in and is ready to take over, then a newish one that's still a bit stiff. It sounds like a faff but I find is a useful conveyor belt.

I am having problems with my saxophone playing I know I started almost a year ago but it seems I am going backwards. I can blow all the low notes but the octave key is not working for me. I have new reads and a legere which is done. I have vandoren now 2.5. When I blow with the octave key sometimes the notes sound wavy and sometimes it sounds good, Then I clean the sax and I can almost play the marines him but the high D to High C and then high B pose a challenge sometimes it works and sometimes does not I mean I practice about an hour each day. A good warm up for me to get started is playing the c scale with is Joy to the world. I hit each note there and play about three or four times to get comfortable or more. The notes sound wavy I clean my sax I mean I break it all down and pull the cloth and clean it as it I was putting it away and the put it back together and start practicing again and it still sounds wavy but the same note sounds good at times. I am starting to read music and have bought a few books now I have to read he song and put the letters of the notes under them in the book until I can sight read the notes but I try to force myself the read the note head location compared to reading the letters for now. Saxophone is nice going to have it serviced soon but what am I doing wrong should I get a vandoren reed 3 ?

I am so frustrated I really am I can't blow any sharps or flats I hear air going in the sax but no sound I blow hard and it squeaks I move my mouth up and down the mouthpiece and then I hear the note nice and clear but I breath and do the same thing and it squeaks again. Really want to play but I can't blow with the octave key on I study of youtube and that is how I found you but still I read books and study music. That is why I stopped a few weeks back but now I am trying again but going nowhere. Pete

I follow people like you on youtube and I am taking an online course now. Finally I am able to play "Michael row your boat ashore" but still I run out of breath and I have to breath each note towards the end of the song but finally I am able to play a little something, right now my sax is at the shop because I dropped it about a month ago he found it needs adjusting and I bent one pad cover that is it. It is pretty much clean and ok I think I just bent the guard but the adjusting must have came like that. It seems I can play a few songs and finally it is starting to sound like a song. I can read music but have to write the notes down then play I can't at this time read a song sheet of music and play by just looking at the notes at least not yet but I am able to identify the notes a lot faster now though. Thanks for your response and as soon as I get my laptop back I will do a skype with you. Pete

Chez guess what? I am at a level now where I can play songs and read sheet music and those noises are all to due how I hold the shape of my mouth I was experimenting and watch a video of your about your chin moving in and out as you play low and high notes that video confirmed what I was experimenting with. Now I do it on purpose just to correct the position for later and to make sure that is what was causing the issues.
The next challenge is going up the scale with the octave key on and being able to hit notes in a song that require it and take it back off for the next note. always something new to learn and my practice sessions are getting longer and longer almost hate to stop. The poor neighbor

Put light down it. Then try to fix small leaks. Check tenon joint too. I made an expanding plug to check my tenon joint. @@petew260

tried the Legere they do last but have gone back to organic reeds, I get 4 times the use out of them by keeping them in mouthwash!

could u blow-dry it for about 10 minutes? maybe use alcohol wipe to get mold off and then add a bit of wood glue underneath?

well something i would do if i were short on money but a reed is bad when it has split obviously , it wont vibrate properly.

When you get so attached to a reed that you name it... give it a home... and feed it.

Not gonna lie, In high school, I only changed a reed if it broke. 😅

er...Chez....could you speak slower? English is not my mother tounge, and you speak too fast some time. it makes me difficult to understand. it would be good if you could leave some notes on the screen.

    • @cheztaylorsax
      @cheztaylorsax  7 лет назад

I will definitely try honey. Got to find a balance to keep videos short but also accessible to those who have english as a second language. Thanks for the feedback though and I'll take that on board. Cx

thanks a lot. I think leave some notes on the screen is good enough. You can continue your style without changing it. For us who cannot under stands, we can pause and read the "important information" on the screen.

Don't mean to butt in, but just as a tip, you can change the speed of the video in the settings.

On screen bottom is a cog wheel. Click on it and her speech will slow down without changing pitch.

Click the clog wheel at bottom. Then speech slows down.
