The refined simplicity on this record is remarkable. Great tones, tight, tight record. I can see how there are those that won't enjoy it but, I know where Josh is coming from on this album 100%. Might be his finest work. I give it a 10. There's nothing I could find wrong in it.
I personally couldn't get into this album at first because of Homme's voice; I don't know why but something about it just irked me on My God Is The Sun. But now I love the hell out of it, easily one of my favorites in the style it plays in and one of my favorites of 2013. Don't know how I didn't like it before.
He would not have a clue what that or 'Wretch' / 'Circus Leaves Town' really are.....he looked them up on Wikipedia before this Uncritical , Un-jounalistic & wrought with idiotic euphemisms non-review.......Dude , Jeffman you rule
Who - What When - Where am I ? - Any evidence whatsoever? Everyone else would disagree. This man has heard his shit, doubt you watched very many of his videos.
This has quickly moved into one of my favorite records. The lyricism is fantastic, from each song to the extended metaphors throughout the album, and the instrumentation is both dreary and just simply badass. It's always a great listen.
1. Songs for the Deaf 2. Rated R 3. ...Like Clockwork 4. S/T 5. Lullabies to Paralyze 6. Era Vulgaris But to be honest I love them all. I respect the hell out of Josh for legitimately treating each album like a different project, always changing his sound while still sticking to the core themes of every QotSA record.
Kek5kopF S/T is only going to appeal to you if you liked Kyuss tbh. (I loved them, for the record.) LtP is actually really underrated to me, but it's definitely a different, more acquired taste I guess. But yeah, the top 3 are the top 3.
***** Then I recommend to delve into the Kyuss discography. They have really made some amazing stuff. It's heavier than Queens though, so you'd have to be into that.
Surprised to not see any mention of Kalopsia, probably a top 5 song of all time for me. Such a beautiful song, great lyricism, amazing variation in tone, so so good
This album was truly a miracle. Being the sixth on qotsa discography and released in the 2010's it's just as good as any classic rock album from the 70's. A modern classic.
The animatic music video covering half of this album or so, it really changed my life. I was in a pretty bleak, dreary, depressing rut in my life in a job that I felt was stealing my soul, my days and nights, and my memories from me. And somehow, as a lifelong QotSA fan, I had missed anything recent by them for years when I stumbled onto this album via that concise, very designed experience through that 'one' longer, collective track composed of most of the best picks from the album. And as it turns out, I was actually starting to grow my own Vampyre of Time and Memory, in my eventual MS diagnosis this year (as well as Queens releasing a new LP) a track that even back then FELT like it had special meaning to me, but with a connection it would take years for life to actually prove to me. I'm not quite sure where this one falls, for me; even leaving aside my personal experience and biases, and even counting my massively wide range of musical preferences, ... Like Clockwork could very well be my favorite album. It is very hard for me to put concrete numbers or placements on things, but there's not going to be too many albums jockeying for that position even through my indecisiveness, and the fact that it would easily always make that cut to me says enough.
I am a huge QOTSA fan, and I thought that ...Like Clockwork is their best album hands down. The only issue I had with the album., oddly enough, was Fairweather Friends. It kind of faltered compared to the rest of the album, in my opinion. Despite the huge "cast" of the song... It was just.. Kind of... Meh. It was boring and I felt that all of the vocals blended in TOO much. Where did Josh begin and Elton end? But everything else on this album was fantastic. I completely agree with your soft 9. And yes, I dug through all of your reviews just to find this since I discovered you. -JD
It just felt a bit out of place to me from everything else musically. I'm not saying it's a bad song at all. Just personally, it was a touch out of place from everything else on that record.
I agree... Fairweather Friends is still a great song, but in my opinion the worst of the album... Piano track by Elton John is the best thing, but the melody of the vocals is just as you say: "meh"
I realize this is two years after you left the comment, but that's the point. I felt the same when I first heard the song, but now, nearly four years after release, I think it's one of the best on the album. It was such a slow burner for me, but I've realized it's just so quintessentially Queens. Definitely some of the best guitar work on the album, and hearing Elton John go ham on the keyboard is amazing. Fairweather Friends is nothing short of legendary.
Agree, I know I'm late but when U will get stabbed and lose 'fake friends' you will realise how true Josh is in that song. I cannot help myself but sing this song everytime it plays. I'm at the point where I feel I could literally make a youtube cover out of the fucking song ... It's just so fucking ... genius ..
Alberto Gaxiola Also, fuck the haters, AM owns, and ...Like Clockwork is my favorite album of all time. Not something I expected to encounter when I'm at the doorstep of 30.
My opinion is that this is one of the best records Qosta have released, but I love all their albums. Josh has been through a traumatic period in his life and his songwriting has matured, Qosta's music has transcended beyond just creating great, hard hitting riffs in C standard tuning, to incorporate a more mature songwriting element, have you heard the lyrics on this album, they're acerbic, eloquent and charismatic!
Era Vulgaris gave us some incredible songs; Run, Pig, Run and River in the Road are still two of my favourite QOTSA songs. Plus, I'm designer gave us one of the greatest feats of lyrical complexity of all time - "It's just like diamonds!... In shit...". Pure genius.
+Jack Von Cider -- hey and what's up fellow music enthusiast. This is said with a plain / calm tone of voice. I have tried to understand what the heck this ignoramous is trying to say , by sitting through a bunch of his programs and.....ALL of this HumanSpam Fucktards reviews are 'fair enough'.......that's why none of the Damageplan show attending Homicidal Maniacs have not shot him in the face. Fair Enough does not coincide with: accurate, concise or relevant / valuable criticism........He is at best a hack at being a hack..........and yes this album probably is not going to eclipse the first 3........A. Fantano does not get the depth of music ; why do think he decided to be an internet critic (just sayin'). He does not innately get the depth of love and pain that goes into the process of being an artist. He does not grasp a body of work and that this catalog / cannon of music that is QUEENS OF THA MUTHATRUKIN' STONE AGE is and will always be F-ING relevant music , that goes down into the annuls of musicology without him............
You're very articulate. Where did you study? Anyway, the '4th LP' (LTP), I agree, 'didn't hit as perfectly', that is, in terms of fan acceptance (including Oliveri as a fan), but oh boy it is their studio masterpiece! It is their statement of what the fine art of recording is all about: quality, depth, nuance, 'shadows on the track', detail... SFTD was about that too, but LTP was such a smooth follow-up. Well, I just love it. Keep it up man!
I just got into this band and this is definitely my favorite thing they've done. And of course because it's a requirement, an ordered list. 1. ...Like Clockwork 2. Rated R 3. Era Vulgaris 4. Songs for the Deaf 5. Lullabies To Paralyze 6. QOTSA
I liked all the songs, including Keep you eyes peeled. I would personally give the album 10/10. But hey, opinions are legal ;) we'll have to agree to disagree! ;D (Oh, nice video btw)
I find it kind of ironic in a way that the old game guitar hero actually is what introduced me to a if variety of bands, many of which have become some of my favorites. Anyways tho glad to see that QOTSA album has reviewed such a great response! I have to admit I was really hesitant on buying the album when I first found it was going to be more of a compilation album than what I had been used to with their previous recordings, but once I heard, I appear missing, and a few samples such as Keep your eyes peeled and Kolopsia I fell in love again and can't wait to hear more great stuff from them in the future!
Loved this review Anthony. Like the album itself, your review is passionate and involved and determined to express as much as possible about the subject. I don't watch all your reviews, but of the ones I have watched, this is definitely one of the best.
loved this entire album. i always liked QOTSA but this album really showed me a new side to them and made me appreciate them more. i think the only track i didnt like on this album was Kalopsia, whereas my favorite track would be I Appear Missing.
He hit the nail on the head with the title track. It’s so fantastic and sad and that instrumental midsection is a journey. It shows how far they’ve come.
As far as this decade is concerned- I think this album is the gold standard for "rock albums". Meaning- this is a beginning to end complete work. There is no filler- it's all good. It's something that isn't being done anymore like it was in the 70's, 80's and early 90's. I'm not saying it's a concept album or anything- it's just one of those albums that you start at the beginning and many times you end up listening to the whole thing in one sitting. In my opinion, QOTSA has done this twice- Songs for the Deaf, which was more conceptual, was the other one. However, every single album this band has ever made always has a distinct vibe that goes along with it. And while QOTSA certainly has developed a trademark sound- nobody could ever accuse them of doing the same thing over and over. And of all the work they have done- this one just seems different from the rest. A great album that makes me look forward to another great one in the future.
Man I totally agreed with that whole 'I Appear Missing' segment. Easily one of the best songs they have ever done. Definitely one of the best on this album, or at least the most surprisingly brilliant
Dave Grohl isn't drumming on The Vampyre of Time and Memory. Castillo AND Homme is. DG played on If I Had a Tail, My God is the Sun, Fairweather Friends, Smooth Sailing & I Appear Missing.
The warm reception of this album and its place in the current landscape reminds me alot of Soundgarden in the 90s. Their albums Badmotorfinger and Superunknown, like this album, were commercially accessible and not really doing anything new musically, but were still loved for the great songwriting and production.
I sadly just listened to this album for the 1st time, great album. Where my opinion differs is the standout song of the album is ‘Keep Your Eyes Peeled.’ That song is the is intoxicating!
Took me a while to actually get into this album. When I first picked it up, I was actually expecting something as heavy and fast as Songs for the Deaf. How wrong I was,.I initially was disappointed at how soft this record was compared to Songs for the Deaf. But after a little while, I actually took a listen and I really dig this album, especially I Sat by The Ocean and My God is the Sun.
10 years later this review still holds up. And now I'm older to know who Bowie was and is. I was too young and ignorant. I always discovered music on my own and nobody ever showed me anything really. I'd just pick albums from the library in France when I moved there. When I left France I remember downloading albums and Queens was a band I came across in games like Need for Speed and Gran Turismo. I had to Google them and became obsessed. Now it's time to obsess with Bowie and his music. I know. I'm extremely late.
Saw them last month here in Columbia, SC. Fantastic show - 1 of the best I've ever seen. Your review of the LP pretty much hits the mark, and I hope Josh and co. continue to explore this new stylistic territory. Keep up the good work, Ant-honey Fanta-ono.
Their discography was overall an 9/10 for me... before villains. It just wasn't for me. Self-Titled 9 Rated R 8 Songs for the Deaf 10 Lullabies 8 Era Vulgaris 8 Like Clockwork 9 Villains 5
Bravo for not being afraid to rate this highly even though QOTSA generally aren't necessarily apart of the fringe indie scene which seems to be the only acceptable avenue to be raved about in music today. Homme definitely pushed the envelope in a good way while still incorporating their sound and created a collection of great songs which deserve the high praise. Absolutely agree with the rating.
For me there the only rock band that does some interesting things with the genre. They actually mess around with the textural sounds. They got good Melodie’s and they work together to create an interesting sound.
the zany falsetto on Smooth Sailing is actually Jake Shears from the Scissor Sisters, not that it's noticeable without seeing the collaborations because they blend so well. but yeah totally agree with you great record and review
I Appear Missing is like the greatest song from the 2010s
Walmar neto It's an amazing song and definitely my favorite on this album, but greatest of the 2010s? I don't think so.
As what I heard from the 2010s by far at least :), what else would you put over it?
I think having favorite or best songs is ridiculous because there are just too many
Walmar neto I couldn't name any better tracks, but there are a few just as good. "Celestial Elixir" by Haken and "Grand Parade" by Blind Guardian come to my mind. And although I'm not the biggest fan of their latest efforts, Dream Theaters "Bridges In The Sky" is a fantastic track. Yes, I like long tracks.
My opinion has changed and I Appear Missing has become my favorite song, so i now agree with you original comment guy.

As I get older the more and more I love this album and truly understand it
Queens of the Stone Age - ...Like Clockwork ALBUM REVIEW
Hi Anthony have you done any review of any Kyuss album ? I recommend you to review the second one : Blues For The Red Sun.
This man has heard his shit, doubt you watched very many of his videos.
thanks for the link anthony, couldn't find the video without your help
This has quickly moved into one of my favorite records. The lyricism is fantastic, from each song to the extended metaphors throughout the album, and the instrumentation is both dreary and just simply badass. It's always a great listen.
Especially the "ichy getchy oola la.. do run run you won't get far."
My favorite song was Kalopsia
Favorite song of all time. I can't believe the melon didn't even mention it once in this review.
Rated R is a dope album
Dave grohl actually didnt drum on vampyre of time and memories
michael masters That was Joey ♥
michael masters yeah it didnt feel like him
It's really clear who played the drums on each song, as Joey and Grohl had their own style of playing.
1. Songs for the Deaf
2. Rated R
3. ...Like Clockwork
4. S/T
5. Lullabies to Paralyze
6. Era Vulgaris
But to be honest I love them all. I respect the hell out of Josh for legitimately treating each album like a different project, always changing his sound while still sticking to the core themes of every QotSA record.
k shaw AGREED
k shaw Yeah Like Clockwork second favorite qotsa record
jmd620 100% agree although I never listen to to the last 3 because they are so bad
It's the best rock album of the 2010's in my opinion
When this album came out, I've heard it entirely everyday for a month.
Surprised to not see any mention of Kalopsia, probably a top 5 song of all time for me. Such a beautiful song, great lyricism, amazing variation in tone, so so good
The bridge to that song is literal euphoria
This album was truly a miracle. Being the sixth on qotsa discography and released in the 2010's it's just as good as any classic rock album from the 70's. A modern classic.
My god, the production on this album is amazingly good. Great writing, also.
Spottony Ontano
I actually think my god is the sun is maybe the weakest link in this record, so yeah a very strong record indeed. I love it more and more each year.
Yep I agree. Weird that it was the only track I liked on 1st listen. Now it's my least favourite. I usually skip it unless I'm playing the vinyl.
Greatest rock record of the last 2 decades in my opinion.
The more you listen to this fucking thing the more I love it
The animatic music video covering half of this album or so, it really changed my life.
3rdObstacle to be honest, I love that song, it might be my favorite qotsa song to date
Agree, I know I'm late but when U will get stabbed and lose 'fake friends' you will realise how true Josh is in that song. I cannot help myself but sing this song everytime it plays. I'm at the point where I feel I could literally make a youtube cover out of the fucking song ... It's just so fucking ... genius ..
At about 3:10 he says that I Sat by the Ocean has a riff pattern that sounds familiar to him for some reason. It's from Coffee and Cigarettes by Blur.
WHOOPS! Its "Coffee and TV". I'm quitting smoking, sue me.
Alberto Gaxiola Also, fuck the haters, AM owns, and ...Like Clockwork is my favorite album of all time. Not something I expected to encounter when I'm at the doorstep of 30.
Alberto Gaxiola you are so right!!! but i love the album anyway...
You've mixed it up with cigarettes and alcohol by oasis !
"I Sat By The Ocean" is the best song the Cars never recorded.
My favorite rock album of the 2010’s . By far is the most ambitious sound that I’ve heard in years in rock music.
First album I picked up without knowing anything about the band.
Hope I like it
I just started listening to this album the other day, i'm obsessed now
an unbelievably great album
gonna say it again...this is their darkest album by FAR...but thier best....i think the rating is fair enough...
1. ...Like Clockwork
2. Rated R
3. Era Vulgaris
4. Songs for the Deaf
5. Lullabies To Paralyze
6. QOTSA
Interesting list, for me it'd be

3. Rated R
4. Lullabies
5. Qotsa

7. Villsins
@@aquid3622I'd just switch 4 and 5 for emotional reasons but I think you're basically exactly right there buddy.

The line up of the band in this album is sooo great, and I Appear Missing has one of the best bass lines I've ever heard in my life
I liked all the songs, including Keep you eyes peeled. I would personally give the album 10/10.
But hey, opinions are legal ;) we'll have to agree to disagree!
;D
(Oh, nice video btw)
I find it kind of ironic in a way that the old game guitar hero actually is what introduced me to a if variety of bands, many of which have become some of my favorites. Anyways tho glad to see that QOTSA album has reviewed such a great response! I have to admit I was really hesitant on buying the album when I first found it was going to be more of a compilation album than what I had been used to with their previous recordings, but once I heard, I appear missing, and a few samples such as Keep your eyes peeled and Kolopsia I fell in love again and can't wait to hear more great stuff from them in the future!
i appear missing is beautiful, just makes me feel things
Loved this review Anthony. Like the album itself, your review is passionate and involved and determined to express as much as possible about the subject. I don't watch all your reviews, but of the ones I have watched, this is definitely one of the best.
loved this entire album. i always liked QOTSA but this album really showed me a new side to them and made me appreciate them more. i think the only track i didnt like on this album was Kalopsia, whereas my favorite track would be I Appear Missing.
I honestly like kalopsia, my least favorite is Fairweather friends and I agree I appear missing is also my favorite, especially live
i never saw them perform live (yet) but iv seen videos of them perform I Appear Missing and my mind was blown
Like Clockwork is the new Led Zeppelin IV, Dark Side of the Moon and Sgt. Pepper. You can't change my mind.
I Sat By The Ocean is a goddamn masterpiece
I just wish josh went straight to another qotsa album, I cant really wait for another one
Man I totally agreed with that whole 'I Appear Missing' segment. Easily one of the best songs they have ever done. Definitely one of the best on this album, or at least the most surprisingly brilliant
This the best rock album of the 2010's, don't @ me.
Dave Grohl isn't drumming on The Vampyre of Time and Memory. Castillo AND Homme is.
DG played on If I Had a Tail, My God is the Sun, Fairweather Friends, Smooth Sailing & I Appear Missing.
Best Qotsa Albums
1. Songs for the Deaf
2. Self-titled
3. Rated R
4. ...Like Clockwork
5. Era Vulgaris
6. Lullabies to Paralyze
The warm reception of this album and its place in the current landscape reminds me alot of Soundgarden in the 90s. Their albums Badmotorfinger and Superunknown, like this album, were commercially accessible and not really doing anything new musically, but were still loved for the great songwriting and production.
It's a perfect album. Perfect track order, great songs/lyrics, amazing sounds.
I sadly just listened to this album for the 1st time, great album. Where my opinion differs is the standout song of the album is ‘Keep Your Eyes Peeled.’ That song is the is intoxicating!
keep your eyes peeled is my fav song :(
Took me a while to actually get into this album.
My God is the Sun is by far the most underrated track on this album.
Fairweather Friends or Kalopsia is.
Kalopsia
I don’t know how it was underrated cause it was on of the 3 songs off this album I would hear on the radio
COUGH In My Head, Everybody Knows That You're Insane..
Oh hell, the whole album is great. And is sadly overshadowed by Songs for the Deaf.
The solo to If I Had A Tail sounds a lot similar to the solo from Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones. Always thought that was really cool.
This album changed me
Same. This album was the soundtrack to my divorce, and subsequent ego death.
No one talks about how brilliant the vampire theme is throughout the whole album. By far the best themed album all time and in my top ten.
as long as Troy Van Leeuwen is in the band, every song is technically vampiric themed

Lauritz Wiesinger S/T muuuch more higher man!!
+Lauritz Wiesinger The S/T is too fucking good be at 6. That album is perfection.
No
I mostly agree especially with first ones
This has to be one of my favorite albums of 2013, if not all time.
Bad brains aren't close to punk? That's it, you're officially banned from DC
The Vampyre of Time and Memory invokes my appreciation for Pink Floyd.
This album is great, but not as good as SFTD.
sprdvx that’s why it is a 9 to STDF’s 10
Keep living in the past buddy
Saw them last month here in Columbia, SC. Fantastic show - 1 of the best I've ever seen. Your review of the LP pretty much hits the mark, and I hope Josh and co. continue to explore this new stylistic territory. Keep up the good work, Ant-honey Fanta-ono.
Their discography was overall an 9/10 for me... before villains. It just wasn't for me.
Self-Titled 9
Rated R 8
Songs for the Deaf 10
Lullabies 8
Era Vulgaris 8
Like Clockwork 9
Villains 5
Blue McDaniel well try again
@Conrad Nickelson big oof for you
Bravo for not being afraid to rate this highly even though QOTSA generally aren't necessarily apart of the fringe indie scene which seems to be the only acceptable avenue to be raved about in music today. Homme definitely pushed the envelope in a good way while still incorporating their sound and created a collection of great songs which deserve the high praise. Absolutely agree with the rating.
Gloss Drop by Battles
TY
For me there the only rock band that does some interesting things with the genre. They actually mess around with the textural sounds. They got good Melodie’s and they work together to create an interesting sound.
whats 'stoner rock'?
It's crystal meth
Kyle jeboss what?
Search up Kyuss.
the zany falsetto on Smooth Sailing is actually Jake Shears from the Scissor Sisters, not that it's noticeable without seeing the collaborations because they blend so well. but yeah totally agree with you great record and review
