  • Hello! Sorry that yet again this video is a bit late- I prioritise quality over punctuality (although in a perfect world we'd have both)- and lots of life-stuff has gotten in the way of getting this video uploaded on time.
    But enough excuses- today we'll be having a thorough look at the Faber Castell Pitt Pens- the 24 brush set in particular- and I'll show what techniques and effects can be achieved with these pens.I'll talk about the specifics too whilst demonstrating these pens on a completed picture- and show how they work in conjunction with Faber Castell's Polychromos.

    Hi friends! I've been noticing a lot of comments on my older videos where people tell me to turn off the background music! Thanks for the feedback- the advice was heeded a while back (November 2017-ish, around the time I was able to upgrade my audio quality), so be sure to check out some of my newer videos. 😊

    Thank you so much for this video! I recently got some of the 6-packs of these pens for my birthday, and as I tend to work more with pencils or digitally, I was looking around for videos that might show some techniques and yours has just been perfect! I love that you showed every technique separately but also demonstrated them in a complete picture, this has been so helpful. And the peacock is gorgeous! I feel like the tail could have done with more blue but the head and the way you did the feather transitions was very lovely. Also your voice is really nice and calming :)

    Yeah awesome pens , I probably have all of them . Its very interesting how you blended the pigment with water , I always used those light grey colours to try and make gradual effect , though you sorted it out very well which i never thought about could be doable .
    it would be interesting to see more of that ,

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  6 лет назад +4

      You have to be really quick with dissolving these with water because they dry quickly and as soon as they're dry they're really permanent. That has its own advantages though! I like to experiment and see what weird ways I can use a product to try and make the most out of them :D
      I expanded my collection of these pens and bought a bunch of them open stock- I bought a load of pale colours so I could do more "dry" blending and subtle layering without having to rely on water to dilute.

    I got this set as a gift about five years ago and never used it. A crime, I know, but they intimidated me! I brought it out a few days ago and I'm very pleased with them, but I haven't been able to blend them at all! I've used different papers and brushes to see if that helped, but they just dry too fast! I wonder if their age has an effect on that? Other than that, they work perfectly and I'm enjoying finally allowing myself to use them! They are so lovely.
    Regarding your video, it was very informative!! I really appreciate how well-paced and detailed you were in your review. Even though I'm very casually acquainted with art supplies in general, I had no idea about the asterisk thing and the India ink and all of that! Most people don't even mention those things, so I was extremely glad that you did-especially because I tossed the instructions away years ago and can't read them now! Also, the drawing at the end is GORGEOUS! I love it. You built up such lovely colours!!

    I’ve always loved these pens! I first used the grey tone set for some comic book style illustrations in 2010 and fell in love. Many years later once I had the money, I bought the full set of these and the big brush set. I’ve found they blend well on bienfang marker paper and with yupo paper. If you use just a bit of water, you can get great watercolor effects on yupo.

    I have those pens in the 48 Studio Box and I really like them a lot. I got them last year as a birthday present from my mom and she paid a little less than 100€. I was really happy with the pens although I never tried another method like yours with the water. Back then I used them for everything. I sketched with them, I did line art with them and I coloured my drawings with them. But since I improved a little when it comes to the variety of the media I own so now I mostly use them for sketches or sometimes colouring (I'm now mostly using Prismacolor pencils for my drawings).
    There was one thing I noticed about those pens regarding the chart in the leaflet. When I did a colour chart myself I tried to always have a look at the leaflet just so I don't miss anything, but I actually found out that there were some of the colours I had missing in the leaflet. That had me a little confused, but I don't think that's too bad. xD
    After all those pens are what I started out with. And now that I know that there are more techniques than just simply drawing with them I might want to use them more often. Thank you for that.

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  6 лет назад

      I'm happy to hear that the video may have inspired you to use your materials in different ways! :D
      The colour chart problem is an odd one, but I noticed that Faber Castell use a couple of different charts for their "green box" items (Polychromos, Pitt Pastel Pencils, Albrecht Dürer Watercolour Pencils, Pitt Pens).
      The one they often use in their leaflets is based around the selection of 120 colours they offer in Albrecht Dürer and Polychromos- then they check off which of the colours are present in the other ranges in the next columns.
      However, the Pitt Pens come in colours that don't exist in the Polychromos and Albrecht Dürer range. Ice Blue and Light Indigo spring to mind but I'm sure there are others. So maybe this is the issue? :)

    Hi there. I saw this tutorial, because I wanted to see what else I can do with my artist pens. I really really love the result! Very beautiful!
    Though I stuck a little with your comment about "finest artists quality" :) Faber Castell is a really big brand in germany tbh. They've got different lines, including school supplies, which are the cheapest ones. Their highest quality is the "finest artists quality" line, like polychromos, pitt artist pens and several other art supplies. So it's not exactly a lie. Just another line in their portfolio 😉 that said, I loved how you showed off the ways to blend them and apply with water (which is what I was researching) and how you explained the way it works. :)

    Great review, I'd been eyeing these up for a while but I'm not so good with marker type products so it was nice to see how you used them in a drawing too, which by the way turned out beautiful!! Glad you commented on my video cause now I've found another great youtube channel to sub to!

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  7 лет назад

      Thank you so much, Squeesh! :D Markers are a little intimidating to me too- it's the pale colours I like working with most for layering and shading, and most sets only come with bright, saturated colours. I've found using a palette and brush with them to water them out has opened up so many more opportunities and made me a little more confident.

    • @LittleSqueesh
      @LittleSqueesh 7 лет назад +1

      I wouldn't have thought you felt intimidated even a little bit by markers in this video, you handled them like a pro! I remember seeing another artist a year or so back doing something similar using a palette and brush with markers, so now whenever I see a water-based product I'm like "OO THE POSSIBILITIES!" 😂Although I'm yet to try it... markers are a fear I need to conquer for sure :)

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  7 лет назад +1

      Thank you so much! I'm used to working in very light layer with coloured pencil- and being able to blend and cover over previous layers with lighter ones if need be. Allowing myself to use other mediums with these pens makes the process a bit easier and is why I love mixed media so much- using the strengths of each medium to the fullest effect :)

    • @LittleSqueesh
      @LittleSqueesh 7 лет назад

      Yes I totally agree! Mixing media to get the most out of each is the best, and so much fun! ... and it totally justifies how much I spend on art supplies 😂

    Hi Claudia, congratulations for the very well done video, the perfectly balanced comments and, of course, your wonderful drawing, I own a few of the 6 pens sets (basic, terra, landscape, manga and shades of grey) plus a couple of different sized pens in sets of 4 (black and sepia) also by Faber-Castell so I think I’m pretty well equipped as far as these pens go, the only and major problem seems to be how to put them to good use!...that is why I went looking for some instructions and examples and came across your channel. Well done review as always, however I'm a little bit unclear on whether or not the brush nibs were flexible or stiff. I think you mentioned they were somewhat flexible but I'm still a little unclear on ir firmness. Thank you so much I really want to get some of these ☺️

      The brush is flexible, but they're not as soft as e.g. Sakura Koi or Caran d'Ache Fibralo brush pens.

    Wow I didn't know you could achieve this level of quality with touch markers. Im a copic guy but I might have to give these a try. Beautiful work!

      Thank you very much!
      These aren't the Touch markers- they're not alcohol based at all. These are different to copics (and touch markers) in that they're waterbased, single-ended and contain pigment based ink- so they're lightfast- which pleases me greatly :D
      But you've inspired me, I'm now thinking that perhaps these would pair well with alcohol based markers. Alcohol based markers are excellent for laying down large areas of colour, but these are great at creating bright details and textures. I'll write it down, sounds like something fun to give a go. :)

    I have this set, and a couple of my pens look starkly different to your swatches, and maybe that's the paper, but the Light Flesh color looks nothing like the barrel or your swatch, it's a weird kind of gross mix of pinks, greys and browns. Might you know any way that I could try to get it back to its original color?

    Hi,
    I've bought them for Bible journaling as they don't bleed and are permanent. However... I'm a bit concerned about the darkness of them. All blues for example look like different shades of navy, leaf green is very dark. I wonder if I'm doing anything wrong by using them just as they are or there's something wrong with the set I got. Any thoughts?

    The only thing I'm not crazy about with these sets is that they are only offered in the brush nibs. The brush nib isn't my favorite in the PITT pens. I have the black 8 set and the brush nib is a little harder to get fine details than the other round/bullet type nibs.

    Awesome peacock! There are videos on RUclips showing how to refill these pens. I wonder if they could be refilled with Hydrus liquid watercolours .

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  6 лет назад +1

      Thank you, Ramona! I would think that hydrus would be fine- my primary concern would be for inks that dry kinda hard and gummy, which could potentially clog the nibs. Great to know that they can be recycled in a way when they run out- I'll have to keep that in mind!

    Great to see colored pencils can be added over them. Being Indian Ink, are they look shiny? I mean since Indian inks are usually shellac or acrylic based so they might have a thick and shiny finish to it compared to dye-based inks.

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  5 лет назад

      Thanks for watching and commenting!
      I found that on this paper they had generally a very matte finish. The exception is that when dark colours are layered up, you'll get a little of that inky iridescent sheen if it catches the light. For example, the shadows between the feathers on the blue area on the back have this property- in the light they give off a faint green reflection. I suppose this is very much dependent on the paper used though- Yupo gives a glossier appearance and perhaps the inky iridescence would be more obvious there.
      On my peacock piece, the paper surface doesn't feel any glossier or thick- the paper feels the same (albeit the surface texture is naturally changed because of the moisture and abrasion from the pen nibs).
      From what I've found online, the binder is a "plastic dispersion resin" (so I imagine like an acrylic) rather than shellac. Hope this helps! :)

    Hi Claudia, Love you drawing and the video. I have just bought the Faber Castell 24 set Pitt Artist Pens. I love them for getting into places you can't normally with some of the other pens on the market. The colours are quite dark in this set so I was wondering whether to get one of larger sets Do you think this would be a good idea. They are very expensive here $NZ96.00 so I wondered whether to try Amazon. Your comments would be very welcome.

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  5 лет назад

      It really depends on your technique and subject matter. If you're finding them too dark/saturated, you could try diluting the pigment whilst it's still wet after application, or before applying it to the paper.
      If you have a set type of subject matter you normally draw, you could also buy the colours you're most likely to use open-stock- sometimes that're more cost effective. :)

    Hi Claudia First, Thank you for your excellent art channel, I truly enjoyed it. I know you uploaded this video last year but I have a few questions for you, did your set come with a white brush pen? and if so, was it opaque and stark white or muted? Did it layer well? Thank you for your answer beforehand. I wish you well and a wonderful weekend.

    how is the bleed through on notebook paper? I was thinking of buying these for small sketches in my moleskine

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  6 лет назад

      overboardjulia that's going depend absolutely on the paper- I can't really say one way or the other although I think they bleed through just as much as any other water based marker. I've only used them on 224gsm mixed media paper and 300gsm watercolour paper. I've found that the thicker/better quality the more layers and abrasion the paper can take, but have had no bleed through from these papers owing to their thickness.

    What if I want to use these to line my watercolor art? If I let them dry for 2hrs will they still dissolve with water?

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  5 лет назад

      They are permanent when dry when worked with on standard paper- 2 hours should be more than plenty of time but it will depend on the type of paper you're using. The only time I've found them to not be permanent is if they're used on a non-absorbent paper (e.g. Yupo).
      As usual, I would recommend that you try the technique out with the materials you intend on using before applying them to an important piece :)

      I really like the light indigo as a bit of a blender, or layered over the top of other pale colours. Takes a few layers to get it to be visibly saturated though, I agree :)

    Excellent Video! You are very knowledgeable in art and I can appreciate that...therefore, I subscribed and hit the bell so I will know when you add more videos. I am contemplating buying a set of these pens to use in Bible Journaling. I also do card making using stamps. Will these work good for cutting out die cuts and coloring them to put onto cards? Will any paper work? I have a set of Copics about 200 of them in the nice case you can get for them, but they bleed bad in my Bible and I also have broken my lower back twice in the past 8 months so I can't pick up and carry my set of Copics. I want to make sure these pens will do what I want then I plan to sell my Copic set. Thank you for answering my questions. Blessings, Denise

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  5 лет назад

      Hi Denise! Glad you like my video :)
      These pens work best on thicker cardstock or watercolour paper. Like any water based marker, they have a habit of breaking down the paper/making it pill if you use essentially more than one layer on something that can't tolerate a lot of moisture. Alcohol based markers (like your copics) fare better on thinner paper as they don't seem to damage the paper structure as much.
      If you're unsure, if you already have waterbased markers (even crayola), give those a go on the paper you intend to use the Pitt Pens with, and that will give you an idea of if the paper can tolerate water based ink, and how much bleedthrough there'll be.
      Sorry to hear that you've broken your back! Warm wishes for your recovery.

      Jesse Gold The box is indeed lovely for them, but I'm sure you could find something that works just as well on something like eBay. There's lots of storage solutions for pencils that would work- thinking of those narrow wooden chest of drawers you can get. Otherwise make-up and jewellery cases can be pretty similar with compartments and magnetic closures! But I'm pleased that you love these pens and it sounds like you have quite the collection! :D

    Your drawing is beautiful. I totally loved it. And thanks for the informative video. CAN YOU TELL ME THE DURABILITY OF THESE PENS?

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches  5 лет назад

      Thank you very much, glad you found it helpful! The build quality of the pens is excellent.
      As for how hard-wearing the nib is, it's going to depend entirely on how the pens are treated and what sort of surfaces they're used on.
      They'll no doubt last longer on smooth paper (e.g. hot press, vellum-finish, bristol / bristol plate). Abrasive surfaces will make the nib fray more quickly. This will have an impact on how easily you can create very fine lines, and also the clarity or "tightness" of these lines.
      I haven't yet used these pens to the end of their ink (although they're beautiful pens, they're not my preferred medium), so I can't give you an idea of what state the nibs are in once the ink has run out.
