  • Life's short. Let's say what's on our minds. Here are 15 [real] life lessons.
The truth will set you free in this world, but often the truth is one of the hardest things to say. There can be a lot of fear to say what's on your mind instead of just conforming to society, but life short and we need to say what's on our minds to infect the world with positivity and reality because life is beautiful.
In my videos, I like to approach topics from a different lens. I like to challenge you to think differently because if you don't get challenged then you risk living a life of one single story. A single story with one set of characters, one set of beliefs, and one setting, but I have learned that life is much more than that. If we keep an open mind and are willing to learn, possibilities are endless.
Here are the 15 lessons that changed my life!
    1. Dream Jobs Were Invented by the Man
When I was a kid I was constantly told to find my dream job and find my passion through work. School often teaches us that we are not complete, that our mission in life is to find a dream job. As I got older, I could not find my dream job and I felt like a failure. Until I realized that dreams jobs were invented by the man to keep you playing the game of life. It's okay not to have a dream job and find passion in things outside of work.
    2. It's Okay Not to be Career Oriented
Society teaches us that everyone is career oriented. That everyone puts work first and it is the most important thing in your life. I told myself a long time ago that my work is just one aspect of who I am, it's okay not to be career oriented and just use my job as a tool to do things outside of work.
    3. When You're Good at Something, You're in the Driver's Seat
Life has taught me that whatever your job is, small or big, if you are good at it you are in the driver's seat. When people know that you do a good job, they will go the extra mile to keep you; however, you have to realize that you are in the driver's seat and make people respect you.
    4. Hard Work Doesn't Pay Off
In my early 20s I worked at a restaurant throughout college making $8/hour. I worked so hard that I noticed on my shifts they scheduled less people. Were they paying me double? No. It made me realize when you work too hard people take advantage of you, but if you work too little people don't appreciate you. You have to find the balance where people respect you but also appreciate you.
    5. When You Do What You Want, People Respect You
I quit my job 5 times in college to travel the world and 5 times I was hired again with more pay and a better schedule. It taught me that when you do what you want in life people will respect you more.
    6. You Set Your Own Boundaries
In life whether it's work or relationships, you have to set boundaries. If you do not people will walk all over you.
    7. Promotions Aren't Always a Good Thing
We often congratulate someone when they get a promotion, but for some people they would be happier without the stress and extra work that comes with a promotion. Don't feel the need to accept promotions because they're not always good.
    8. Kissing "Butt" Doesn't Get You Respect
When you do this it usually creates the opposite where people will take advantage and not respect you.
    9. Being a Jerk Does Get You Respect
Don't live in extremes. If you want respect you have to find a balance and nobody likes a jerk!
    10. Risks Always Pay Off When You Have a Plan
I have taken many risks in my life and every single one of them have worked out because I had a plan. Don't quit your job with $0 in savings because it won't work out, but if you have a plan it will work out.
    11. Don't Spend Your Money Based on Your Salary
Most people have the view of "this is how much I make so this is how much I have to spend." In reality, your salary should have nothing to do with how much you spend. You have to determine you happiness threshold and focus on saving money without depriving yourself of anything.
    12. Debt = Corporate Slavery
When you are in debt you owe something to someone and usually that person is very aggressive. It's better to be poor than in debt because when you're poor at least you don't owe anything to anyone.
    13. Money = Options
Money is a powerful tool to control your life. If you are able to get your finances in order you will have more control over your life and can do what you want without any financial burdens.
    14. Money and Opportunities Can Trap You
As you get older and start making more money and have better jobs, this is a good thing and a bad thing. Money and opportunity can create fear inside of you that if you leave you might not find something as good. Life is short, so don't let these things trap you!
    15. Stay Poor
Money is a tool that can change your life. Unfortunately, as people start making more money they generally start spending more. Happiness is found internally so stay poor and use money as a tool to make your life better.

If you're not afraid to say it, what's one thing that life has taught you?

Life has taught me, at 63, that I must find my own path and if I crawl into bed at night and feel content I am doing something right. Others can guide me but I have to find it myself and it feels pretty darn good, Austin Williams. The second thing life has taught me is that others do not have my best interest at heart -- except perhaps my late parents. I've learned to carry my own torch and do so proudly.
I asked for money once in my life and the feeling I had when he lowered his eyes and said, "Sorry, I can't," made me promise myself I would always have a savings account and that happened because I became frugal.

There's no shame in working somewhere like Panera Bread. A job is a job. I grew up with the narrative that "you'd better get good grades in school or else you'll end up working at A & W"... I used to think as a kid: "What's wrong with working at A & W?"

Learning to be content and live a simple a life as possible! At 58 years old I started decluttering at 63 ( with a house move in the middle) I am still decluttering!!
Yesterday, I cleaned the house. I had to move so many things to dust. I decided that a further reduction in clutter was necessary as too much if my time was taken up moving things! Time we can never get back.
I so agreed with what you said about the dream job - you can get close but jobs don't last. Younger folk - save for the future don't buy or accept stuff that you don't need!

Oklahoma, run by Republicans, paid me less than minimum wage for teaching calculus 2 at a community college. I also taught sufficient classes to be two full time professors and got paid less than the national average for one. Watch out! I have now left the US and live in Central Europe, and my life has never been better. It is not perfect, but it beats the hell out of what it was, especially in Oklahoma, where I also knew and worked with many good people.

New subscriber here, I've been binge watching your videos and I have a request, could you do a separate video on lesson #14 because I believe that would help a lot of people out here including myself. I lhave a "good" job and make good money but I live in South Carolina and I hate the constant heat and humidity and love cold weather. My dream is move to either North Dakota, Minnesota or the UP of Michigan but my job doesn't transfer and I would lucky to find a job in either of those locations making half of what I'm earn now. The problem is that I'm not getting any younger and I'm miserable where I'm at but I make good money, that's why I would really like to hear you expound on lesson 14 . " Golden handcuffs"!
