    Slapped a 1915 in my '65 years ago. Once I worked out all the "bugs". She would pull the front end up and drag the header collector on the ground. Neighborhood kids loved it at night due to the spark show. I was young and dumb trying to build a race car. Just recently fired her up after sitting for 8 years. To my surprise, she runs pretty good.

    The motor looks beautiful and likely (understandably) not cheap. But the one thing I can't get my head around is that a nearly 2L motor only produces 120 hp. The value per hp just wouldn't be there for me.

    • @powerhausvw
      @powerhausvw  Год назад

      Thanks Michael, It really depends what your after, small cc engine making big hp is just bragging rights for mechanics at least in my opinion and that's ok, fun to compete with but we are building engines for customers that mostly want an engine to be driver friendly and last a long time so we like to use a larger cc engine, set it up mildly so that it produces more low end torque as appose to a smaller engine that needs to be high in rpm to achieve the same hp goals.

    • @powerhausvw
      @powerhausvw  Год назад

      Good question, pretty much every part is aftermarket but maybe because they still use factory part numbers on some of the parts, the aluminum engine case we use was never used in a factory production VW but is made by Autolinea which I believe did build parts for VW at some point so I guess it can identify as a VW engine if it wants, I'm not gonna argue. 🙂

    120hp isn’t a lot for a 2.0 litre motor

  • @TLLC2024
    @TLLC2024 Год назад +1

    Sorry, but 30hp per cylinder? Nothing to brag about. Harleys 2023 stock 114 motor comes in at 100hp or 50hp per cylinder. So, with 4 cylinders you should easily be able to produce 200hp on a mild build. Come on man! It's not 1949.

    • @powerhausvw
      @powerhausvw  Год назад +2

      We do offer a mildly built low compression 200hp/200tq 2387cc.
      For years, we never posted HP on our engine builds for this very reason and we'd always get asked how much HP does that engine make. Now we start listing it in our post and some get the idea that we build with the intent to get the most HP and RPM possible which is not what we do. We build engines to fit customers request, driving conditions, install capability's and also budget, not every customer is after HP. Most of our customers like to cruise and have a driver friendly, reliable non-leaking engine. I agree with you, there is a lot of new technology now days and even though the engine design we're working with is still 70 plus year old technology, we've made as much as 500HP with some of our turbo efi builds, it really boils down to what our customer wants to do and or spend.

      I built dozens of (perhaps a few hundred) engines from 1973 to 1978, mostly stock.
      My brother was a certified VW mechanic and I learned all I know from him. He left the dealer and opened his own independent VW shop.
      I moved on to another career in '79.
      Now, at 70 years old I would love to understand how to build the "hotrod" engines like these on display.

      I remember but it was mostly because back then we were boring out the stock magnesium case which made them week and or thin in areas of importance but now days we’re using an aluminum case that was built for the larger crank and cylinders with added material so a 2332 or even a 2387cc engine if built with a mild cam and low compression can be more reliable than an old rebuilt 1600cc.

      I'd say typically yes, they fit in fine, some of the early VW's may be a bit tighter of a fit especially if the body bushing are worn out or if any major body work has been done around the engine bay, so mostly yes but we have seen small modifications needed on some cars.

      Most of our customers will fix up and use their VW’s for a fun weekend car or yes cruise to an event or show. Parts prices have really gone up and finding a local VW mechanic may be difficult. I usually tell friends and customers that are looking to get into a classic VW or any classic car, it’s like owning a boat or RV, expect to spend money with no guarantees and be patient, if your just after reliable transportation with cost efficiency and intend to put a lot of miles on it, I’d probably say it’s not a good investment.

      We're actually not taking in orders for our turbo engines at the moment, we have them listed on our website as not available. The main reason for this is that these type builds take up a whole lot of our time and we still have several full custom builds to complete along side of our normal aspirated builds plus some of the efi parts we were using are not available and we will be making an ecu change very soon, pricing on all parts have gone way up and nothing on our set up is an off the shelf or sold to us in kit forum, everything on this engine is either custom made or heavily modified, so when we do start offering our turbo efi engine again, we'll probably only take on 2-3 builds a year and they will probably start off at about $34,000 by the time we add for all the changes and upgrades we are working on.
      Our old set and specs that are currently listed on our website made about 275hp-300hp at the rear wheels on pump gas and water/methanol injection, we've made as much as 415hp at the rear wheels on race gas and about 23lbs of boost.

    Awesome work! Beautiful simple engines. Got an idea while watching this video.
    With all the green initiatives out there, would it be possible to take a simple naturally aspirated VW billet engine and replace the alternator with a alternator/generator? It would enable a mild hybrid set up. The battery could be placed at the bottom of the front trunk to creat better weight balance. I thought I saw something like this at Sema one year? Perhaps it could put your company in a positive light when the California Air Quality guys come knocking?

    • @powerhausvw
      @powerhausvw  Год назад

      It really depends on how much custom work you are willing to do, the type 3 engine requires a lot of fabrication and modification in order to get any dual weber engine tucked nicely underneath the deck lid, we've done as big as a 2387cc even turbo efi but will definitely require a custom engine build as well as a custom install.

    Finally some one I can ask this question on reliability on stock trim fully rebuilt how long do they last mileage wise before another rebuild I was goin to purchase an old sand rail like the 70s military one but the guy said it's the small motor if you want more power find an older bus vw tranny I didn't buy it because I'm unfamiliar with this engine and know they used these in kit planes so what's the down low on these for maintenance and longevity

    • @powerhausvw
      @powerhausvw  Год назад

      That's a tough one to answer, to many variables, these engines can be set up for many different uses and every engine builder has their own ideas. Some builders build for the most hp and rpm they can achieve, others build for low end torque and reliability, some transmissions are geared low and the engine will run at a constant high rpm on the free-way, etc. etc. If you have a chance, feel free to call us during the day, ask for Jerry or John and one of us wouldn't mind going into a little more details.

    • @powerhausvw
      @powerhausvw  Год назад +1

      We’ll it really depends on your expectations, if you go out & purchase a brand new Subaru engine equipped with quality parts, it’ll cost more than one of our brand new engines but if you go get a good used Subaru engine and can put it in yourself properly, you’ll definitely save some money but if you or someone plans to do the swap like most I’ve seen with radiator sheet metal screwed into the spare tire area, coolant pipes running underneath the car, wiring & hoses everywhere, your probably better off leaving the engine in the Subaru and driving it but now your back to selling the bug again 😁

      @@powerhausvw I have tested severals valve covers models in my 1600cc with similiar setup (~90hp). I have been driving almost 200 km per day since 2016. The beetle is used as main car to go to work that is in another city. In my case the better solution for stop the leak was return use the original valve covers + very good quality gaskets. For unsual car use as mine, I've been replace the gasket each 2 months (~5000km). Some people calls me crazy due to gasoline price in Brazil. But once infected by VW air cooled... One way ticket. I believe that great organization and nice projects in your shop shows the passion since a long time. Am I right?

    I had a thought a couple of weeks ago. Since the cam is under the crank why do we have to rev. to 2,000 for 20 min. The idea of that is on normal engines to throw oil up to the cam. What I was told to break them in is as soon as you get them running and time was to go 40mph in 3rd and that was to set the rings .
