    I liked the drive and enthusiasm of Mr Stern. Striking how clear he articulated the brand strategy and his demonstration of leadership to new & innovative timepieces. Succession planning at his best to get his young sons involved into the product development phase. The new additions to the Patek family shown are gorgeous. PS: for what it is worth, in my opinion - excellent strategy not to run the risk to reduce Patek to be ONLY recognized and associated with Nautilus. Patek Philippe is much bigger and has so much more to offer.

    Something very simple that Patek just does it right - the date window at the right size and right color, and most importantly, in the right position (so close to the edge) that blends into the dial. Great interview! 👌

    Last year they released the sports watches ahead of the dress watches a few days apart. I was hoping you’d ask Thierry if there was a second batch of watches to be released at Watches and Wonders? I’m guessing Aquanaut related with it being 25 but I don’t think they’ve announced all their watches.
    PS it was a great interview. Not many questions were needed, leaving space for Thierry to speak. Well spoken by him, well interviewed by Wei Koh. Too job!

  • @kaiserphoenix01
    @kaiserphoenix01 2 года назад +15

    Recently Patek gets criticised for cutting corners, particularly in finishing (ie no interior angles etc) but I have to disagree. A watch is so much more than just movement finishing, what Patek has are viable products. Their watches, are beautiful, mechanically impeccable and very wearable. It stands up to daily wear, whilst maintaining many of the characteristics of a hand crafted watch, even though in modern times, there is less human intervention, that is now replaced with better movements, thinner, and reliability. Great interview.

      8 patents... We need more info on that

    • @bsodmike
      @bsodmike 2 года назад +1

      I think that comment applies to the movement within the Chronograph 5170G that I bought just before Covid kicked in. It’s movement is designed with the least amount of interior angles.
      Sure, you can add interior angles, make it harder to finish, throw longer man hours to finish it and then the customer gets landed with a more inflated bill right?

    • @kaiserphoenix01
      @kaiserphoenix01 2 года назад +1

      @@bsodmike Yes but I guess this is where disagreement happens. I also agree with you in that with the current "pricing" perhaps the lack of interior angles is somewhat unfortunate but probably inevitable, specially when you consider most watches that have impeccable finishing, say Voutileinen or Akrivia costs much more. But then otoh, Patek being Patek, should we be expecting more as well? It should be an expensive product anyway by the nature of the brand, maybe the pricing is too low?

    • @bsodmike
      @bsodmike 2 года назад

      @@kaiserphoenix01 it’s not just pricing being low though is it. If a movement needs more time to finish , and Patek has to meet 65,000 pieces per year, they will need a larger work force too. Ultimately such decisions would fall on Thierry but I personally have no complains about the In-house Patek Chronograph movement. Also $80,000 isn’t all that “low”, when you consider that you can get a perpetual calendar for around $120,000/-. If you make the Chrono cost more by adding interior angles, that changes their entire pricing structure too.

    • @kaiserphoenix01
      @kaiserphoenix01 2 года назад

      Yes exactly. I think ur slightly misunderstanding me in that I completely agree with your points. Just asking the question as to whether the entire watch industry pricing has gone too high or if Patek is having to “adjust” their quality and pricing to make it balanced as you say. The more angles the longer it takes and more expensive. But should Patek be more expensive? Or is it already high enough?

    Excellent. Good to hear the straightforward and candid responses from thierry stern. While the 5711 is iconic to PP, he wants people to remember that there are other product lines. Of course, choosing the 5711 to commentate the 170 Tiffany anniversary may just further reinforce customers association with PP and the 5711. I’m sure much smarter minds at PP have considered all of this. Looking forward to seeing more innovations from PP.

    This dial is one of the best things I've seen from the show. Well outside my own budget, but these are both really gorgeous. A perpetual calendar seems to add more complication than it's really worth (both to the movement, and for the user), but an annual calendar seems really practical & attractive to me. A guy can dream! Interesting interview, thanks 👍

    Thierry Stern is a CEO I respect, especially his history with Patek, it makes for a very pure brand. However, his strategy to reposition the Calatrava in a bracket that is roughly $10,000 more than its predecessor, really seems unfair.
    I am not sure what to think, however, as an enthusiast, I am flexible and see a better future with Grand Seiko, especially following their newer offerings and calibres

A little like that Tiffany dial, Tiffany blue nautilus when the wannabe competition had a similarly colored dial getting a big commercial success. Do you think maybe M. Stern wants to make sure people see Patek ain’t nobody’s second fiddle, particularly if that wannabe isn’t really a haute horlogerie house like Patek?
