- Review of the Garmin Striker 4 on the water! I promised I would do a video where I review the Garmin Striker 4 while actually fishing on the water about a year ago in the last Garmin video. Sorry for the delay, but it's here now. I will do more in-depth videos on just features to really give you guys some great details on how to operate this fish locator.

For anyone wanting to learn how to read the sonar, put it on demo mode, look up a RUclips video explaining how to read sonar and then start picking out the fish on the demo screen. It helped me alot. Fish often appear as little arches on the sonar from what I've seen. Several large arches a couple of big fish and tons of small arches crowded together would be a school. I've only used it on the ice but have had good luck with it.
I wish you would spend a little time showing how to spot different sizes of fish and how to read the fishfinder (how to tell between fish and plant/debris etc).
In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ruclips.net/user/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.
I bought a striker 4 about 3 weeks ago and I've been buying parts and pieces to get it all mounted on my kayak. Yesterday afternoon the last part came so I mounted it all up and took the kayak down to the pond at my house. There was about 3/4 of an inch of soft ice so I paddled through all the ice and knocked a hole beside my kayak and dropped the transducer arm into the water and turned the unit on. What insued was some of the most exciting bluegill fishing I've had in years. Awesome little units very powerful tool for the money you spend on it.
I mounted the striker 4 on my kayak. I love the fish finder. So many options and super easy to use. Thanks for the simple but yet informative I formation.
@Ryan John I purchased a transducer mount off of Amazon. And mounted it to a board I made for on the kayak. I mounted the fish finder and transducer on the board that mounts to the front of my cockpit. I have a sit in kayak. I got alot of my ideas off of pinterest

This is what I was looking for... review of the unit in use. Brilliant kayak solution. All the advantages of fixed mount FF and XDUCER, in a completely portable kit. I'm buying one now.

Hi, I was just wondering how you mounted the transducer to the boat?
Hello! I mounted the transducer to my Minn Kota trolling motor via mounting hardware included with the fish finder (mounting block, heavy zip tie, and anti-slip rubber sleeve). The transducer was mounted around the circumference of the prop housing, behind the shaft and in front of the prop. Very little interference from the prop.
I mean, what I do not know, what is most important, is it customisable?

Got mine in front of now. Got it for $200 from Anaconda for a Fathers day present (Bargain!). Going to use it the Kayak and Tinny so just need an Aluminium bracket to fit both. I had a good play around with the display one in store and it seemed really user friendly. Cant wait to use it!

Also, can you use the route option without having the waypoint "map" on the screen, for exemple while having the sonar screen on without the waypoint screen? Will it bip if you deviate too much from the route and when you have arrived at the selected waypoint without having the waypoint screen on?
Can you get video of the brush piles with crappie on them? I’m having a hard time identifying unless mine is not calibrated right
I figured it out.. I just need to know how to read or understand what bass look like on this fish finder. I've never used one or have played with one till now it's very easy to use I know how to work the features I know what to do I just don't know how to locate fish or know when bass pop up on my screen.
Jadiel 254, there's no for sure way to know what fish you're looking at. However crappies usually move in schools and look like large funky debris. Smallmouth are probably the easiest to find. If you can locate baitfish near the mouth of a river or near a drop off, than you can assume there will be smallmouth, walleye, or even largemouth. Find the food, and find the fish.

I’m not sure if you said this but what is the minimum depth it will read?
Dose it map out to see if there are anything in the way like depth rocks ext
Does this fish finder show underwater structure such as ledges, humps, and holes?
I just wish this came with an SD card slot to load charts from Navionics. It already has GPS so it doesn't seem like it would be too hard for them to integrate
Random question. Do you know of any fish finder or other device that would be able to locate a boat motor I dropped off the back of my boat? I have a real good idea where it is. It is in about 40 feet of fresh lake water but bottom is very dark and muddy. Any ideas?

Hi Carlson, I just rigged up the Striker 4 CV. I'm on a southern Ontario lake with is quite tea stained so I do get a lot of interference. I'm having trouble locating the thermocline on the Striker. Can you comment on the best frequency/settings to see this? What would it look like on the Striker?

I really like your entire set up. My jon boat is mainly for duck hunting. For fishing Im looking to go from a really basic modified kayak to something a little nicer. I need a better a seating position and propulsion for health reasons.

I just commented above then read this comment. Any updates? I just bought one too and I'm going to install it on my Kayak. I've never used a fishfinder before and would really like a nice detailed tutorial. I'm sure many anglers would appreciate it. All the videos on youtube are unboxing and basic reviews.

Is it possible to display depth, sonar profile, and GPS coordinates on the same screen?
How do set up audible fish alarm
Will the navigation still show a straight line between you and your waypoint even if it is not possible to travel in a straight line to get to it?
For example, if your way point is around a corner it would not be possible for you to go straight to it because you would have to follow the contour of the land.

Thanks! Yes, you can vertical jig at that depth with this unit and still receive an accurate reading. One thing I have noticed is tiny jigs don't read very well, but if you're fishing at that depth I'd assume you're using something moderately heavy/large. In my experience, an 1/8 ounce jig or larger reads out very well at those depths.

@@CarlsontheOutdoorsman When you're spotting your 1/8 oz. jig at 40 foot plus depths do you remember your frequency, gain and scroll settings? I'm guessing 200 khz, auto or manual high gain and ultra or fast scroll, but lower settings might work too.
Hi, I was wondering whether the video STRIKER 4 basic versions? Also, I am very interested in the bottom view of the lake / river? How much is that this unit successful? Can you clearly see the stumps, coves, rocks ..Thanks.
GPS function is weak. There are no preloaded maps. Just a blank screen that tracks your movement like a bread crum trail.
My Garmin striker 4 show fish shapes and labels them by number such as size 1 through 9. I am assuming size 9 are the bigger fish. What I am curious is how do I know how big each fish size is according to number?
This is a great fishfinder but it's a close call between the Garmin striker and the Lowrance hook2 with gps. The hook2 has a significantly larger screen, and that matters. Price range is about the same.
I am thinking of buying one. could you do a run down of all the features/menu options and just tell us what you think it does.
So if i buy an install one it can tell where i am in the world and allow me charts. Or i can get way points on my own. Can i see the screen in direct sunlight ?
What kind of batteries & how long do they last? I have the Garmin etrex 30 for hunting very good product!!
I use a EXIDE deep cycle battery, but only because I also use a trolling motor. I would imagine with most deep cycle batteries, this unit will run for days or even weeks without losing power. However, if you're looking for something cheaper and lighter, I would recommend a sealed lead-acid battery. Most are about $20 and will last all day with a full charge.
What does the brown and blue wire do and if they do something then does blue go to negative and brown to positive or blue to positive and brown to negative?
I just bought one for my hobie compass. Hope it helps me catch more crappie and bass.

How does it work in shallow water? My old raymarine wouldn't function well in around 3-4 feet and under
In my experience it functions very well in shallow water, assuming the water does not have a great number of obstructions or weeds.
So where is the sensor to view the fish...how do you mount it..

When on your waypoint map, toggle over the waypoint you want to go to. Press the "options" button, choose "navigate to", and it will guide you to your waypoint.

Here's one for you Carl. The mode you use for ice fishing or straight down fishing. How would that work if I wanted to do a little drift fishing in 60-80 feet?
You can use the flasher or the split frequency. I prefer the split frequency, but you need to keep your jig within range of the transducer in order for it to pick up. Once you see it on your screen you should be able to see all your movements you make. I would recommend that you turn the A-Scope on, this ensures you can see any movement just before it shows up on the screen.

Unfortunately, this unit is not compatible with maps.
Found this video again! 😁 How does the transducer read out? Meaning does it read more out to the rear of the boat or front? If you were to troll for fish, is it going to read what you already went past or what’s coming up ahead of you? I think I’m going to get one because it sounds like this finder is well worth the money
Depends on where the transducer is located. If it is mounted towards the bow, your readings will be directly underneath you. However, if you mount the transducer at the stern of your boat, your readings will be directly behind you.
Don't own a boat but I am renting one for a fishing trip with some buddies. How easy is this to install and uninstall?

You can power this unit with a deep cycle battery. You can also use sealed batteries, starter batteries, or even AA batteries grouped together. However, all of these have their pros/cons.

I want to get a fish finder for rental skiffs since I don't own my a boat. Would the striker 4 portable kit work without having to drill holes? ( I don't think my skiff rental place would appreciate that )
Can you do a video on how to set up way points and location from scratch? I bought mine used with my boat and it's like locked into some random location they fished at. I can't get it to find my current location. I've deleted and removed all of their routes and way points but some how it won't locate my current new location. I'm almost thinking it's still the demo GPS map.
CK_32, yes, I plan on doing videos using the Garmin. However, for your situation I would simply recommend wiping everything and doing a "factory reset". It will show a boat on the way point map, that indicates where you are. To wipe all the memory and restore it to factory settings go to Settings> System> System Information> Factory Settings> Yes>. That should do the trick, just keep in mind that everything saved will be lost. Hope this helps!

Yes, Sometimes. I have had the portable Garmin in one of my friend's boat and once I activated it, his fish locator received critical interference. Though I didn't have any problems with my Garmin at the time. I believe this is entirely dependent on the devices being used because some fish locators have two transducers for different types of clarity for example, and they don't interfere with each other.
would the flasher mode pick up a downrigger ball?
One spot with the recording device would be peachy so a person's eyes have time to focus as well as the recording device

does it navigate you through land / islands? Or does it go around land / islands? like if you google earth a coordinate and go on the lake or river and navigate to it will it know the land boundries?
No, there is no map of land features. You can add waypoint coordinates by using Google maps/earth to create a route for future use.
