- In todays video I attempt to get the Land Rover Defender 90 moving again after realising the handbrake was stuck on. I also have to jump start it. If any of you have any ideas as to what is wrong with it then please let me know in the comments. It might save me an expensive trip to the garage.

You have to get the rear propshaft off and the brake drum to really sort the handbrake, it's because it got wet too often and the bits inside need cleaning up and regreasing. Mine was properly stuck and took all morning to knock it loose. I don't miss the Defender much, they're a lot of work.
Lift pump knackered by the sound of it. Quick & easy fix although from experience avoid the aftermarket ones (Britpart etc) as they are crap.
Without sounding nasty but in the short time of watching this video this looks like a classic example of a Land Rover not being looked after with regular servicing! The hand brake linkage should be greased up or at least oiled, it’s bone dry! The handbrake travel is massive also.
It’s easy to do both things and will save you doing things like this! If the battery draw is still happening then disconnect the heater plug relay, this happened to my 200tdi last month!
As for power, change the fuel filters, then look at the lift pump.. I would say the landy needs a bloody good service!
Also, it’s a 300tdi which should have the R380 gearbox in it but the gear stick knob looks like it’s a LT77?
I’ve owned a 200tdi defender just like yours but a couple of years older and it’s got over 300,000 miles on it now and I’ve owned it for nearly 25 years.. in all that time it’s let me down once when the clutch exploded.
All this crap about the. being unreliable is down to the owners putting cheap crap parts on them and not looking after them.. drive them slow and let them warm up, keep the undersides clean and protected and use good quality parts and you won’t go wrong!
I also look after 3 defender for our company which are used to pull ships wires and ropes and they have a combined age of over 50 years and they’ve all provided great service!!
Hello, thanks for your comment. I have only purchased it. I had a new chassis put on it and I had a 200tdi retrofitted into it as it was a 2.5 TD before. I certainly intend to look after it and do regular servicing. I want to drive it for life. It's in the garage now. They're Land Rover experts so I hope they will sort it. They dont think it's a battery draw as they did a test and said it's fine. They seem to think that it's the alternator. They said it should be charging 13.8 - 14.2 but it's charging 13.1. I gave them the green light to fit a new Alternator and also fit a new startermotor as they reused my old one after the engine swap to save me costs but it used to make a crunching noise before. If you watch the video, that battery light on the dash console stays on until I give it a rev. I tested it when the light was on and it was charging at 12 ish so there's definitely an issue somewhere.
I'll do another video when it's done so stay tuned
I agree with the above , once you get on top of everything they can be very reliable, I have every faith you'll get there.
I'd take a guess that the engine to chassis earth has given up, they should turn over a lot faster than that. The engine is now trying to earth through the handbrake cable, causing it to melt and seize up.
A few people have said this. I appreciate your help. I'll take a look when it's back from the garage. They said it's the alternator but I agree this sort of stuff needs checking too. Thanks again. I'll post an update video
LOL, that ending though :D
I know. What a muppet 🤣
I bought mine with a parasitic drain. Someone had skewered/chafed a few wires when putting the centre fusebox cover back on. Worth a look.
Thank you very much. I took it to the garage and they’re looking at it Monday. Fingers crossed 🤞
They sieze up all the time. The drum gets crap in it and then corrodes the linkage. If you have the cash and the time do an Xeng handbrake up-grade. It removes the drum and replaces with a disc handbrake. Best thing I have ever done to my 110.
Ah thanks mate. That’s very useful information. I’ll check it out. There’s so many things I need to get done to this landy. The last few owners really didn’t look after it. I’ve already spent a small fortune 😭
@escapetoruralwales no worries. It's pretty easy to strip the handbrake drum and clean it up once you have it released if you don't want/can't upgrade. I hope you've bought the workshop manual for the 90, it's the bible for landy owners.
@@edwardpercy2490 yeah I’ve got it. I’m getting major works done at the garage due to no time to work things out, but I plan to do all the small jobs myself. I’m doing all the doors and fitting new door cards shortly as the ones I have a re torn to pieces. I’m also going to replace the locks as it came with central locking alarm system (which I took out as it was rubbish) and no keys.
Sounds like a blocked fuel filter, maybe changing that will help, or at least eliminate one possibility in the fuel feed. . It is in the engine compartment next to the coolant header tank and looks like an oil filter.
Hey mate, thanks for commenting. I recently had a 200tdi engine retrofitted into it and looking at my receipt for that the fuel filter was replaced then. I’ll take a look at it tomorrow to see if it looks new.
I would have done exactly the same thing and pulled the bloody handbrake 😂😂
I’m a numpty sometimes 🤣 I have an update video on this coming in the next day or so
The problem is it's A Landrover, they come with a free bag of spanner's, mine are nearly worn out, lol....Enjoy the journey 😂
Absolutely mate. I hear you. It's all fun and games haha
First thing I would do is take off the battery earth connector on the chassis (attached to gearbox mount) under passenger side and inspect that. They are prone to corrosion and will play havoc with your electrics. Also check other earth leads on engine. Take them off and wire brush them. It may be where you aren’t getting 12v to the fuel shut off solenoid on the pump so it’s not opening properly until you start it and the alternator boosts the 12v power allowing it to run normal, plus it will hopefully sort the slow cranking problem.
Disconnect battery before messing with it.!!
Oh and the handbrake, put a new cable on. 🙂
Don't think there is a cable on the transmission brake; it's just a linkage.
@@georgerogers5954 that is the series land rovers that have linkage only
@@ianwallett7438 Thank you. It's in the garage now. They're replacing the alternator as it's charging at only 13.1 when it should be 13.8 apparently. I'll see what that does but I agree that those sorts of things need to be checked too. That's something I can do myself when I get it back. I'll post an update video next week after driving it about for a bit. Thanks again mate
The problem is fuel leak-back. You have air getting in to your fuel lines, causing the fuel to leak back to the tank.
It's tricky to find the source of the air getting in. With my 300tdi, it was the bleed screw on top of the fuel filter housing (it had a stripped thread). Obviously, put a new filter on too.
I'd suggest changing the lift pump for a new Delphi one as a matter of course. Lift pumps don't last long on a 300.
You should get improved starting and running, with more power available when you've found the source of the air ingress.
Thanks for the comment and advice. I just had the alternator changed and a new starter motor and it’s starting straight away. It still needs a few revs to get it going. Is that to do with the fuel pump? I’ll do another update video soon
Glad the starting issue has improved with alternator and starter motor change. 👌
I reckon the 'few revs to get going' is still air getting in somewhere. This is why it takes a few seconds to get going, as the lift pump has to provide fuel to the injector pump, and expel the air in the system.
Just a thought, it's also worth changing the leak-off pipes on the injectors. They perish and split, potentially letting air in to the fuel system. They're pennies to buy and take seconds to fit.@@escapetoruralwales
No harm in changing that lift pump, too!
Wouldn't be suprised if it's a knackered lift pump mate. Notoriously crap and inexpensive part just buy a Delphi or good quality one to save you doing it again in a year.
Hmmm. I just checked and it seems it’s a pretty easy thing to replace. I’ll investigate that further. Thank you mate
@@escapetoruralwales No worries at all mate. Let me know how you get on 👍
Yep had to replace mine as was causing starting issues. There is a manual lever on the under side of the pump so you can manually operate it just keep doing it until you feel resistance then you have primed the system 👍🏻🇬🇧
@@AJ-qn6gd very useful info. Thank you
Glow plugs are probably knackered and injectors need a service or good clean. When did you last give it a full service including fuel filter change?
Thanks so much for the advice mate
ll part of the game of owning a Landy.
It's all fun and games haha
Yep, the problem is the green emblem on the front 👍🏻
need to check if it’s diesel feed or elec problem. are the glow plugs glowing ? alternator charging ? how old’s the battery ? good luck man, and keep her on the road!!
The alternator is charging at 13.5. I checked with my multimeter last week. The glow plugs are new I believe as I had a 200tdi retrofitted about a month ago. The battery is brand new. It seems to start when I give it a jump start but doesn’t on its own unless over driven it in the last hour. I have a suspicion that it’s a parasitic drain. Either that or the starter motor. It did used to make a crunching noise when I started it😭
Is the handbrake cable getting hot while cranking the motor?....
I’ve seen smoke coming up through it before.
Bad earth to chassis and drive train. Rear left of transmission. Clean all and add others? You can slack off the handbrake with the expander adjust opposite where your cable rod enters back of drum.
@@jonocharles1046 very useful info. Thanks so much for that
Hit the drum the Arm goes into yeah
There handbreak shoes in the drum
That stick on SO HIT THE DRUM
Thanks for the info mate
Those landrovers come with a guarantee. Guaranteed to breakdown at least once a year.
🤣
Hammer fixes all defende4 probs
So true 🤣👍
Bit of wd
Yes, it needs a good soak 👍
