- “Rolling Thunder” (1977) is an American neo-noir action/thriller that was written by Paul Schrader and directed by John Flynn. While only costing ~ 5 million dollars (US) the film made an estimated 130 million at the box office.
Critics of the film weren’t very happy with the violence of the film or the general tone of the violence but raved about its direction, cast performances, music and action sequences.
The film is based on the fictional character Major Charles Rane who has returned home in 1973 with three other comrades to Texas after spending seven years in a Vietnamese POW Camp in Hanoi. Like many soldiers at the time he has a very hard time adjusting to the times and finds things have changed a lot. Thinking he was dead his wife had been engaged to the local chief of police and his own son doesn’t remember him at all.
Upon returning the town gives him a hero’s welcome, gives him a new Cadillac and 2,555 silver dollars, which represented every day he was sitting in the POW prison.
Later a gang steals his money and mangles his hand in a garbage disposal. After recuperating in a hospital he begins his plan for revenge and accomplishes it quite well, even with one hand.

Great film a masterpiece
Rane's home in the film was actually my grandmother's house on Pyron Ave in San Antonio. She let them shoot there so she could keep the set additions that were installed --- including the sink disposal where his hand is ground off!
I missed this comment somehow. Wow! How cool is that!? I'd love to see what the house looks like now. I'd buy that disposal if it ever came up for sale!
He’s one macho mf’er
Where can I see this?
