My three times great grandfather - Joseph Merryweather - moved to Battersea in the late 1850's. By 1948, the Merryweathers were the largest family in Battersea - with a 101 members. 65 of them were invited to a free movie night at the Granada cinema. Quite a few of them lived in Arthur Street - which no longer exists.

You must be related to Sean Merryweather? I went to primary and secondary school with him in the late '60's/early 70's

@@frankandrew6703Quite possibly. Although he could be related to the Merryweather family who had the fire engine company - Merryweather and Sons. They're a different branch of the Merryweather - originating from Yorkshire I believe. Apologies for the two years it's taken for me to reply 😊

Thank you for posting these Photos. I grew up in Battersea in the 1950s onward, and went to the Swan pub that was rebuilt on the site of the original, next to St Mary’s Church.

Linda, my father and grandparents and great grandfather's generation grew up in Battersea -Warriner Gardens. As a kid, I lived first (for a few months only) in Peckham, then , for the whole of the 50s, out to the Hampton suburbs. Every Friday, though, we'd get on the train from Hampton to Clapham Junction, through the little arcade with the wonderful petshop man, and on to Warriner Gardens- where Nanny, in spite of rationing, always managed to find ham for a ham salad- which she knew was my favourite! The Park, the funfair, the old Guinness clock and the treewalk, the Teddy Boys by the lake that Nanny once chased away with her umbrella for shouting 'f..k'!!! ..but I loved their gear- although wasn't allowed crepes, winklepickers or pink shirts (too spivvy and effeminate' said Mum!) Then the smell of candyfloss...sitting outside the Latchmere with a sarsaparilla while Dad and Grandpa went in for a quick Mackeson ..the Italian ice cream parlour on the High Street..the lovely Jamaican family who moved in across the road from Nanny with their amazing convertible American car, and brought her plantains and mangos..all of these memories come flooding back with your wonderful posts, all of which I've watched. And your choice of music is faultless. Thank you for the memories- and a few (good) tears!
