there is 2 advices i like for environnements design : name things you see in references (big trees, bush, small trees, leaves ...) and try to find a 2 or 3 line story to explain how build the house change the place. (there is a path or something else due to the construction)... it's looks evident but it helped me so much ... at my sens this tutorial give the right direction.
