Custom Shop guitars are a unique blend of materials that go through a unique grading process before they are constructed into your guitar. Before we make the first cut, we start with the most premium materials we can get our hands on, which is one of the benefits and key features that makes every Gibson Custom guitar and the Gibson Custom Shop so unique. Our grading and sorting process on the materials is second to none.
In this behind-the-scenes tour of the Gibson Custom Shop’s Wood Library, join Gibson Gear Guide host Dinesh and Dustin from Gibson Custom as we explore the incredible selection of Gibson tops and woods available for Gibson Custom guitars. Take a firsthand look at the unique blend of materials and the meticulous grading and sorting process that sets Gibson Custom Shop apart, and see a selection of the woods we use, whether it’s mahogany, maple, koa, or sapele, to create our guitars.
Watch as Dustin shows us some incredible Gibson Custom tops, including the stunning AAA-figured R9 top, featuring a super wide flame and a rare one-piece 3A quilt grade. Discover the beauty of one-piece 5A quilt tops and the breathtaking effects of two-piece quilt tops when water is applied to bring out their full potential. Learn about the requirements for grade and weight and how even plain maple tops are carefully selected to ensure perfect balance with mahogany backs, and learn more about why the weight and grading process is crucial, especially for those looking for specific weight preferences in their Gibson Made to Measure guitars.
If you’ve ever wanted to design your own Gibson guitar, the Made to Measure program allows for customization based on wood choices and weight preferences, offering both chambered and solid mahogany backs, depending on whether you want that heavy or light feel on your shoulder when playing. For those vintage-style purists who desire a solid mahogany back on their Gibson Custom guitar without the shoulder ache, the weight and grading process ensures that the lightest materials are used without removing any material.
Dustin and Dinesh also discuss the variations in Gibson Burst finishes and give you a small tour of the tops available to you when you build a guitar in the Made to Measure program. Check out some AWESOME wild flames to historically accurate bursts that are similar to what you’ll find if you travel back to the 1950s. Learn how each Gibson wood top is unique, with mineral deposits and character that make every guitar one-of-a-kind, and get a feel for what makes the Gibson Custom and Made to Measure guitars so good.
So join us as we tour the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, Tennesse, where it’s not just about the materials but also about the people who bring these guitars to life with their expertise and dedication to making the best guitar they can for you.

Perhaps you should sort out the quality issues with all your other guitars before wasting time on custom stuff.
