  • Don't have the money to pay for a fancy thrust calculator? Just print these two parts onto a chunk of wood and add a cheap kitchen scale!
I test a few propellers in this video for an upcoming video, so enjoy!

So, I had a thought. If you test this and place the scale on a flat surface close to the ground, it would show less thrust because the air doesn't have a good follow-through flow. The floor pushes the air back up to the prop, making it give an inaccurate reading of the thrust.
I think you should have elevated the machine onto a table so that the prop is sticking out in the air. Using a lever system, you can place the scale on the opposite side of the lever so that when the motor produces an upwards force, you can measure the downward force on the other side of the lever. This would allow your motor and prop to be in the optimal airflow, accurately simulating the conditions when the RC plane is in the air. It will essentially provide you with a more accurate depiction of the aerodynamics of the RC plane as if it were in flight.

This is an AvE level breakdown with family-friendly language. Great job.

It would have been pretty fitting if he had yelled "Corntact!" when he ran that first test.

Would you happen to have a blueprint of your setup? As part of my year 12 physics course I’m planning to conduct a test on how changing the angle of the propeller changes the engine’s thrust. I’d really like to replicate a setup similar to yours to achieve this :D

GWS props. I still have “a few”.

I watched this video with a great deal of interest, however, could you please clarify a point; The prop was turning clockwise with prop positive pitch I think and would have a tendency to lift the 20x20 beam. Did I miss something?

Well made and super helpful I know you will be successful at anything you try. Good luck

is there any motor available in the market which can give minimum 2kg thrust with 6inch 2 blade or 3 blade propeller?

Just see if you can find a 1500-2000W peak motor, with relatively high KV and you may find what you are looking for

Great video. Do you have another one on how to spec propellers for motors?

Isn't the prop spinning the wrong way in thus case?

Should be done upwards in my opinion.

I take it you are running the props backwards for your tests. Aren't they optimised to run in the forwards direction? If so then this test procedure is flawed.

They were flipped so they run the correct direction, always have the numbers on the prop facing away from the thrust.
