thats why chenali (liya chen) is such a great artist at a really young age because she has a twin sister which is also an artist so its like 2 brain instead of one for problem solving
Hey Mark! Man, this resonates so much with me. I quit my programming job in 2019 to study illustration (ideally get good ASAP, obviously haha) and then immediately… got a brain injury, which meant no painting for months and honestly I still have issues with communicating. Life’s not going at all like I imagined, and never will. “Art alone” has really been such a crazy journey of self-discovery and learning to just… trust my choices. Even if they’re dumb choices in retrospect, making choices rather than being frozen seems like the only way to get CLOSE to the high idea-generation environment of being around other artists. Just finished a goal of making 300 paintings in one year (and forcing myself to post each one on instagram/tumblr no matter how much I hated them), and boy it felt like maybe a dumb idea some weeks when everything I was painting sucked, but it got me SOMEWHERE, and certainly somewhere far better than I REALLY believed I’d get when I started in January.
Wow damn dude. You’ve been on such a ride! Im so glad the video resonates with you. And I wholeheartedly agree. Making choices is better than not making choices. Ditto for the idea of thinking less and just doing more and just doing retrospectives on done work rather than paralysing plans beforehand. Thanks for the comment. I do appreciate you sharing your unique story. 🙌
I agree 100% Mark, its very hard to feel like you are doing art alone. I'm making it a goal of mine to join more art communities this year. Hopefully in person in 2022!
Wow you've done a great work putting these feelings into words. From my experience I've grown so much as an artist and was the happiest when I had a community of concept art guys and we went drawing every week or so. Most of them moved away for work and when we do meet up it's mostly chitchat and no drawing. (Still loving that, don't get me wrong) When I had to grind art on my own I felt like I wasn't improving at all... made me burn out eventually. Had to take a 2 years break. Also due to carpal tunnel, noticed you had a problem with that as well! Mobiliy/strenght excercises did wonders for me, believe it or not! Back on the art path again but still alone ;^; online communities like discord just don't cut it for me, idk if I'm too oldschool. If I find a solution I'll let you know :') Anyway thanks for your videos, really loving the content! Post more
dangg thanks for this comment! I really felt that. For real, thanks for sharing your experience. It's crazy how many similar people are on this same boat. I'm in vancouver now and have been making gains again haha. Im only here for two months, but having artists around me boosts me so much. I want to do another video like this on "recognising progress", but first I wanna test out one of those art timelapse v/o ones on a prop haha. Thanks, and Im really glad you found value in the video :)
