Think it's better to make the whole bathroom a "wetroom." The whole bathroom floor slopes towards a large drain. That means much more maneuverability and fewer things to catch toes on. There's a bigger sense of spaciousness when the curtain is pushed back to the wall. Use the shower curtain to protect cabinets, toilet, etc. Much easier to clean, too.

Make the bathroom a wetroom with a shower curtain to protect toilet, cabinets etc. The whole bathroom floor drains off instead of just the shower area. Fewer things to bump into getting into the shower. Fewer corners to clean. The sink overflows it goes towards the drain. Lots of plusses.

Some localities require a permit before allowing you to install “permanent” ramps for homes. A temporary ramp probably won’t need a permit. Check before installing. We used a Roll-A-Ramp for our son’s wheelchair. It allowed us to bypass the permit since it could be easily installed and removed. We really liked their ramp system.

Each of us….whether age -ready or not….what is being done at the county level? Is planning in place? Low cost loans and grants? Information of every kind
for Age in Place-what is your county doing ?
So much can be open source, homeowners can make improvements incrementally.
It should be a family affair. Bring everybody together for ideas and to finance improvements for family members who need assistance.
Items shown here…the things are durable and would have resale value if you changed your mind.
If you were looking to buy a home, wouldn’t you favor one that had ramps and a home elevator and lowered cabinets?
Assisted living averages $7900 - $9000 a month. Compare that to handicapped fixtures shown here.
Talk with family members about how it can work.
As we age, set aside money that can be used to modify and improve. People understand downsize.
    Let’s think right size.
Good for This Old House for bringing up this subject. More please.

What about the cost of removal as the main reason the boomers need them is they created the junk food giants and are now borderline obese while the silent generation aka great depression survivors were at a healthy weight and kept exercising into old age the generational difference is very stark.

As a Visually impaired and some physical disabilities person, I find this informative….. to a point. As price goes, some choices are affordable others not, but a few also have some flaws. The metal ramps albeit there are some drainage holes, it still does not stop that high risk of ice and slipping. The oven door should be French double doomed instead of a full range door that swings out sideways. There’s also the fact that nothing was even brought to mind about certain household build ins etc that are designed and are available for those that the visually impaired or totally blind. Ya ya, you can voice in the Associations for the blind, but let me be clear, they only direct you not really help you in these particular instances.
Oh ya, to those of you that think a bathroom should be a complete wet room, your way off. A completes wet room adds more hazard of slip and falls for people with visual and physicall disabilities as well with the elderly. This I have experienced personally to be fact. I broke my ankle in a full wet room bathroom in Egypt(these are common styles a bathroom in the Middle East) and got a concussion slipping in a handicap wet room bathroom at a hotel.

The best thing you can do before you get old is to STAY IN SHAPE AND GET ACTIVE. Don't keep thinking you have time, you don't have time. The longer you wait the harder it is. My mother is 71, she broke her leg last April but is now walking normally again with no crutches. Most people her age would've been disabled due to that. Her active lifestyle prevented the injury from being worse. Now she's back to walking daily!

Home builders and developers have failed us. This market while helpful, price gouges the accessible needs. Get rid of stairs and replace with gradual ramping; have only one story. Mandate 36" wide doors, better is pocket doors. Drains in floors like kitchen and bathroom...make all kitchen appliances counter height. Have more sensors for falls along with touchless lighting and access. Stop with overhead cabinets. Its a start but long way off. Make corners radius and features for grab access.

    • @ryanroberts1104

So you expect everybody to live in an old folks home just because some people are old? Those features cost extra money, and are incredibly obnoxious to those that are normally abled.

Ada accessibility is not a builder/ developer failure and gouging. Not every home needs it. But yes thinking ahead a bit would be helpful and no real change in cost to build, but the unreasonable cost of some of these updates is not on the builders/ developers, it's the company's that make and selll these products that know they have the market cornered and these things are needed but will not sell it without making huge profits at the same time as taking advantage of those most vulnerable.
