I think it's impossible to ever fully separate the art from the artist. Speaking as someone who enjoys HP Lovecraft's work and the cosmic horror genre, the racism, ableism, misogyny, and classism of Lovecraft is utterly inescapable in his writing. Artists put their worldview and beliefs into their art, even in small ways. Especially art that is meant to convey a message or emotions. Plus, by supporting the art, you are likely funding the artist or increasing their popularity and influence in some way. I think the conversation is really less about separating the artist from their art and more about how we as consumers can ethically consume art made by harmful people, as well as what constitutes harm and is that enough to withhold our support. There's no solid answer, and it's up to the individual really.
You "people" always call other people "dangerous" or "harmful" because they say things you hate. Other people believe in things that you don't so you start telling them "you are wrong. And you're racist."
@@boneappleteeth3127 Wait hang on, are you trying to argue that HP "Look up my cats name" Lovecraft *wasn't* racist???? Do you hate leftists so much that you are willing to die on the hill that Lovecraft is a totally cool, not racist dude????
I definitely think it's *theoretically* possible to separate the artist from the art. But ye (maybe even more than Lovecraft) has ALWAYS put a lot of himself into his art, often making it outright autobiographical. The distance between artist and art is variable and nuanced, and a horrible person making art imo doesn't necessarily mean you shouldn't consume it (since you can consume most art without paying the artist). I wish people would stop making it all one thing or all the other.

Pretty sure making someone watch a porn video is sexual harassment. That's uncomfortable as fuck and I can only imagine how it feels being forced to watch something like that so you don't piss off the unstable guy across from you, regardless of sexual orientation or anything else. It's sad how far gone Kanye is
Not to mention how many porns do you gotta be watching to find one which sounds exactly like a guy you know.... then on top of that save it, or remember it so you can show him next time you see him. It's creepy af and funny since he calls himself the ultimate Christian religion man.
I’m bipolar. Let me tell ya, from so many different meds to therapy for years, I’ve worked my ass off to be “normal” and it is really really upsetting to see Kanye being openly PRAISED for being absolutely unhinged, and doing things that if someone like I did, would get me locked up in a mental hospital.

Kanye has stated in interviews before he loves when people are against him. That’s how he came to his rise to fame, but after establishing himself, he realized most people were now with him, agreeing with him and generally enjoying his music. With people no longer against him, he continues to try and do the most outlandish things possible in order to get people against him once more, though this time it seems he’s doing this while his mental health is really badly deteriorating. Not defending him, just trying to get a sense as to why he says the things he does.
“You can love your kids but not give a shit about them” so fucking true. I deal with that with my kids father. You can love your kids a lot. It doesn’t make you a good father.
The way that he put it was perfect, especially in reference to Kanye. In the end, we don't know what goes on in celebrities lives (not really) but as someone who has watched KUWTK for a long time, you can see that "you can love your kids, but not give a shit about them" is honestly so true. Poor kids, hopefully Kanye is better behind the cameras and what not, but either way the kids deserve a loving father that would put them first not some twitter fame.

On the conversation of separating the art from the artist, a case that just came out today comes to mind. After listening to Rex Orange County for years, it is extremely hard to do so today knowing he has 6 pending sexual assault charges. I related and cried many nights to his music, but as a victim of SA myself it is hard to know that I'm financially supporting another predator when listening. I feel like this discussion comes down to what you are comfortable with giving your co-sign to. The art and the artist can only be separated so much especially in cases where their life and music are tied together very closely, such as Kanye.
I get second hand embarrassment when people say to separate the art from the artist cuz if you think about it your still supporting them every time you stream their music or buy merch that’s their income that your contributing to. Kayne has done and said some out of pocket shit and people still support him on the DL and it sucks cuz what point are we trying to prove to people who already hate said artist or other artists in general. It gives others the green light

Personally, I don’t see separation from the artist’s art as a viable alternative. Art is any form of expressionism from an artist - in other words, an artist is their art. To separate the two, you lose the nuance/meaning/complexity behind a piece. Basically what makes art - art.
I agree on some level with you since there is a lot of art like that but there is also a lot of art where people find their own meaning that is different/separate from what the artist intended. I mean look at literature, everyone whose had a bad English teacher knows that there are some people who see a certain meaning in a piece of art and don’t accept any deviation even though there are reasonable reasons for someone taking a different meaning from a piece of art. In visual art alone certain colors while they might have a mostly global agreed on meaning there are some which are viewed with almost opposite meanings in different places in the world eg white being worn by a bride in the west to show purity etc while in China before western ideas spread white was only worn by a dead person or by someone in mourning. There can also be emotional connections someone has for a piece of art (music, visual, literature) that came long before they knew anything about what the creators views were/are. Like I have been a huge fan of the Harry Potter series since I was a child and have important memories of being read the books by my mom and relating to being hated for parts of my identity. But then I found out about JKRs transphobia. And I am nonbinary. I separated from the fandom for a while but decided that I wouldn’t let the creators awful rhetoric and bigotry ruin my childhood. I can read the books and enjoy them while also confronting the bias and bigotry behind the creation both intentional and not. I have some art that I do not consume after finding out about the bigotry of the creator but it depends for everything.
(I’m Jewish, for reference) I’ve only been able to separate the art from the artist if the art isn’t a form of self portrait. Singers who have been antisemitic are almost impossible for me to separate from their art because their art is their voice, their face, and stories about themselves. It’s easier to separate authors and directors from their art because their connection is obscured and forgotten about, and many people work on movies specifically.
@@rosamy2017 Totally agree. Some forms of art are much harder to separate, songs especially since they are often the most personal and straightforward in their messaging.

For me a huge factor with artist/art separation is, are they still profiting off it it? For example, buying minecraft doesn’t put money into notch’s pocket anymore, but for jk Rowling it does. Obviously there more to it than that but that’s a big factor.
idk the art vs artists argument is so strange to me in the age we live in, because there are so many talented artists out there that are kind people, that you can find easier than ever before. I just don't understand why you would knowingly consume art of a horrible person and benefit them when you can find nicer artists out there that also make beautiful art. but I also kinda relate to your case to case basis thing, not for myself, but when others consume certain media, I find certain things easier to brush off than others. I just personally for my own consumption tend not to separate the art from the artist in most cases, when I can easily search and find better artists if horrible things come out about someone. there is no ethical consumption under capitalism but we all still gotta do what we think is morally right and protect ourselves and those around us best we can.
I had a psychotic break and had hallucinations daily for at least a year, and i still knew not to be a racist or anti-Semitic weirdo. You should be good as long as you don't personally believe those horrible things to begin with.
@@mariya_tortilla sometimes its that simple, sometimes its not. Grief can become anger, anger can bleed into places and be directed towards stuff its not supposed to.
I feel like it's just up to every person to decide how if they can/want to separate the art from the artist. 90% of the time I can't separate it, but I know there are those who can (it's also much easier when the person is already dead lol). That being said, I do think it's one thing to just listen to their music but another to be buying/wearing merch of the artist after knowing they're a piece of shit. That's openly promoting them and keeping them in the public conscious, thus keeping them influential and relevant. But that's just me!
yes, definitely different to just listen to their music! i've had a couple favorite artists turn out to be assholes- I'll listen to their old stuff if it's personally meaningful, but won't support anything new or promote them at all. though i've yet to encounter the issue where the artist's actions overshadow/change the meaning of their past work.

I’ve always struggled with the “separate the art from the artist” because by listening to, consuming, supporting THE ART, you’re directly supporting the artist. Not only from a legitimate standpoint of supporting their projects but also by supplying them with income. I do see the other side of it, but I just feel like it’s no different than buying products from a company that has come out with dangerous rhetoric or “bad things.”

Some forms of art are much harder to separate, songs especially since they are often the most personal and straightforward in their messaging.
i really liked this video you did. i know you've been saying you're struggling to find your thing on the commentary side of youtube, but what i like about your channel is the randomness of your coverage. i love your videos, keep it up!
im jewish and tbh im disgusted, the kind of shit ive had to endure is crazy, u cant just blame his anti semetism on his mental isues because its wrong and it hurts
i love the way you formed this and adressed everything with evidence and solid points
I honestly just think Kanye is the human form and embodiment of ego.
Lol I swear to god ever since he said ‘slavery was a choice’ I can’t think of anything else every time I see his face
For me a huge factor with artist/art separation is, are they still profiting off it it? For example, buying minecraft doesn’t put money into notch’s pocket anymore, but for jk Rowling it does. Obviously there more to it than that but that’s a big factor.
Fuck you did that Ben voice way too well Nick. I'm disturbed yet amused
Kanye is literally murdering my brain everyday he exists 😂
its funny though because Candace Owen's in Ben Shapiro's token black friend but little does he know that he's the token Jewish friend
idk the art vs artists argument is so strange to me in the age we live in, because there are so many talented artists out there that are kind people, that you can find easier than ever before.

@@mightymeatymech doesn't do shit for depression though

Have a medical support system in place beforehand
@@lizz83 I mean I do believe that once art leaves the artist the meaning to each person is totally personal so you can definitely still enjoy the music! It means something to you that is totally yours 😀
The way I clicked on this so fast just cause I read Kanye 💀
I clicked so fast cause it's Nick crying about something. Again.

Read the room
@@fiire_bug I didn’t realize RUclips channels with dozens of thousands of views and comments were colloquial “rooms” to read before laying out an anecdotal experience? Get over yourself
@@valentinescookies. “read the room” is a passive aggressive phrase in itself, it doesn’t mean “please assess the context and situation in which your opinion is being expressed” and even if it was, it’s a RUclips comment section. YOU need to relax
@@evosteff That’s exactly what it means though “to understand the emotions and thoughts of the people present, especially to determine what would be appropriate or inappropriate to say or do”
I am relaxed but you don’t seem to be, maybe it would benefit you to take your own advice. In this context I think the shoe fits, considering how vapid and unrelated the original comment is under a video about anti semitism…maybe you felt hurt and triggered because your insipid little comment fell under the same category.
As a swiftie, there’s always been a reason to hate him. He’s done so much to hurt people I genuinely can’t fathom why people would support that.
Is that you in the profile pic and channel videos? Cause if it is and you’re calling yourself a “swiftie” this is the funniest shit ever lmao no offense bro you’re based
the way yall think that irrelevant shit should even be brought up when we’re talking about actual hate crimes against jewish people is so funny
im so extremely worried about the ramifications this will have, especially with how rabid kanye's fans (used to be?) are
Lol his white fans are going craaaaazzyyyy
as someone who suffers from bipolar disorder just like kanye, I can confirm Antisemitism and racism are not a side effect of our mental illness
The way you describe things is impeccable
Nicks videos are the only way I know that today is Monday
Adidas is a German company so it would be pretty risky to align themselves with somebody who's openly the anti-semitic. There is a religious belief that all black people are Israelites which I'm guessing is what he was referencing.
Good point about how ethical consequentialism is more meaningful than intent, especially in this situation!
That Shapiro impression was really good! Also, I think it's safe to say this is officially Bambi's channel. But... so many of us have musicians we've loved but aren't sure of listening to their music. For me LostProphets was that band that helped me through my teens, and I'll love Rooftops forever, but the singer Ian, we all know what that sicko is.
thank you for speaking about this, most people avoid talking about antisemitism despite it being super prevalent, especially today
i currently can't wear a kippah outside because im scared, and every synagogue in my city has been threatened recently
nick i was patiently waiting for you to release a video
Thanks for breaking this issue down in such a concise and insightful way. You use your platform well, young padawan
As a Jewish person I can confirm that I am controlling the whole world I personally made you upload this video.
Kanye didn't say anything about controlling. But Jewish people ARE great with finances and they're great with finding and managing talent. That's not exactly a bad thing.
@@chris135x there are many poor/average income Jewish people, Far more than extremely wealthy ones. Especially practicing Jewish people don't tend to have a lot of money probably due to having a lot of children. I am non practicing.
@@LK-my3wq Jewish people are still known to know how to manage finances and entertainment. That's not exactly about control over someone or something.
Man, you leftist are true NPCs. You just repeat the same things because other people do.
You cannot separate the artist from the art. Even if not directly, you ARE supporting them. Imagine someone listening to lost prophets these days, I’d never speak to that person again.
You can appreciate and enjoy art without supporting the artist. I'm a fan of Mcafferty's work but I listen to RUclips lyric videos instead. That's not supporting the artist its listening to music
Lost Prophets? The band that had a PEEDOH singer???? HOW are you LEGIT comparing Kanye to THAT???? FFS kid! GTFO!!!
I really appreciate you talking about this.
...Your shirt tho 👍🏾
You mentioned how his beliefs can affect his daughter because of the color of her skin, which is true, but she's also AFAB, and Kanye is pro-life. That too puts her in danger because that man wants to ban abortion. That's two layers of yikes.
Everything you said is fragile nonsense.
The thing about separating the art from the artist is that some artists (and fans who support their views) don’t separate it themselves and see people who still consume their art as supporting their views. Even if you don’t want to enable someone’s actions, you still are.
it's important to remember that mental illness does not cause bigotry
Another reminder that bigotry is something the left loves to use.
i’m not a psychiatrist but i’m diagnosed as bipolar and know a variety of other people diagnosed as bipolar and i feel like he might actually have bipolar schizoaffective disorder given his actions when it comes to thinking everyone is out to get him and believing all these conspiracy theories

I was not looking at the screen and genuinely thought you cut to a clip of ben for a sec
i feel the same as you about artist x art, when i like an artist because of their personally and that makes me enjoy their music i can’t separate, but if it’s someone that i don’t care if it’s dead or a live i just like the art it’s different

I'm not sure if the majority of people saying "white lives matter" are whatever you think they are. If those people are what you call them, then that can be said for those who say "black lives matter". Because literally nobody at all said "black lives don't matter". This all started because of some socialist.
