    If you turn all the lights off at night at once. They could get spooked. I have to keep a small room light on. Scared of dark I guess but mine is still young so expected

    Hey, do u always have a open top?
    Im thinking of getting one myself with the waterlevel 15/20cm under the top, to prevent fish from jumping out..
    Wil that work?
    Nice fish u have!

    Good informative videos.
    Can you elaborate why salt alleviates stress? I used to use salt a lot like you recommended. But I've stopped. I've discovered that water quality is a lot more important than all the additives like salt (and salt with fancy names), ketapang, and what nots.... I used to test my water, with all the parameters available, ph fine, ammonia and nitrite zero, nitrates not more than 20 (API test kits) and yet I was having problems. All these additives didn't help either. There's other things (won't be heavy metals, heavy metals aren't an issue in M'sian tap water, our tapwater quality is excellent except for sediment and chlorine) that causes the arowana stress in the water. Basically I cut down the food, and increased biomedia..... and of course regular water changes (30% twice or trice weekly)
    Thanks for you efforts in sharing your experiences, interesting seeing how others do things, always learning.

      Firstly thank you for your kind words. Salt reduces stress of the fish by conserving their energy by reducing osmotic regulation of the fish and surrounding water , let me explain further the salinity of the fish is more than aquarium water so the fish got to work harder to kept its salinity incheck ,So by adding salt to the water you fish wouldn't have to use much energy to focus on osmotic regulation instead it can focus of healing or just recovering.. But salt should be use during stress or when the fish is sick or injured. I don't use it all the time. Yes i agree with you , i also don't use any sort of ketapang nor vitamins for my fishes only regular wc as you said our water source are great . Nevertheless salt and some meds should be kept in hand incase of any emergencies.

      @@TheSimpleAquarist Thanks for you explanation. I do agree about salt helping out in assisting in healing and giving the bacteria a hard time during bacterial infections. However when keeping the water quality in good condition, I don't get any infections (finger crossed). Cuts and scrapes don't result in fungus and other bacterial infection because the bacterial load in the water is low (bacteria is always present).
      Ok, ya, I've read your explanation on osmotic regulation, etc... sounds familiar. Not to put any doubt on it, but just curious, has it got any actual scientific basis, it sounds logical, but has this been actually studied and experimented on aquarium fish species to assess this? Any papers on this, or is this assumption just anecdotal ? This might apply to some fish, but not necessarily others? Fish like Arowana live in very soft waters as our rivers are all very soft. To be frank there's a lot of myths out there, some propagated by well meaning ignorant ppl, other myths are propagated by those with a financial interest (sell you their products). I'm just bringing this up for discussion purposes to learn more truth. Not pseudoscience.
      I recently read somewhere, salt is an effective neutraliser of nitrites. It reduces the toxicity of nitrites. Wonder if this is one of the cases where adding salt helped the fish recover in nitrite poisoning and then after awhile it became a cure all treatment.
      I've come to the conclusions (anecdotal of course), just my own thoughts that ketapang helps in cases where they need it to help lower the pH, because the pH fluctuates broadly in the tank for whatever reasons, and by bringing it back down, it is changed to the less harmful ammonium. It treats the problem, but temporarily as they are not treating the cause of the ammonia production. So if you can control the water quality, ketapang isn't needed.... Just my own opinion. I used to have a friend who swore by ketapang leaves, said whenever he put that in, the fish calmed down. It was very jumpy. To cut long story short, nitrates were high, light on 24 hours, pH was over 8 due to huge amounts of crushed coral, needed UV light to get rid of suspended algae (High nitrates), etc, etc. Got him to remove all that, cut down feeding.. etc, etc.. His fish improved, calm, colours started improving... all good. All boiled down to water quality, didn't need to use ketapang leaves anymore.

      Well, there are numerous studies on the effects of Salt/sodium chloride on fishes. AS for nitrites, you are right but salt does not directly neutralize nitrite's toxicity instead that salt actually inhibits the gills of the fish so that is blocking the nitrites from absorbing into the gills. As for ketapang many ppl are out making their own juices and what not but i really don't find it useful as most sickness that our fishes get are from our water parameters, imagine this is, if you haven't done a water change in a couple of weeks and normally your routine is bi-weekly then your nitrates will shoot up making your PH drop so low due whatever buffer you added won't be enough to maintain on top of that you added Ketapang leaves = disaster!.For nitrates best and most economical way to control it is by water changes (if you have a big tank take a look at auto drip system)ruclips.net/video/R75c_PyNdiQ/видео.html. Yes, all that said keeping good water parameters and of course a proper diet is Good enough to keep our fishes healthy.

      @@TheSimpleAquarist You're right!
      But what I find is the insidious climb of nitrates even with constant water changes. After a year of regular pH and nitrate testing that were good, one gets lazy and assumes everything is the same, then when a year or two later the pH and nitrate is checked - pH down to 4, Nitrates 80....
      So start doing daily 30% water changes.... pH start coming up, nitrates start going down.... but.... a week or two later....
      Once the pH goes above 6, the ammonium in the water becomes ammonia (layman speak here) and disaster happens. Speculation here, but I believe this is what happened to me.

    Bro do you think its good that i feed my rtg aro with pallet and mealworms only? Usually i will give 50% mw and 50% pallet on each mealtime. And occasionally i give some feeder fish.

      I always preference pellets on top of everything. Mealworm has high protein but also high in fats..so you might wanna cut down abit.

    • @TheSimpleAquarist
      @TheSimpleAquarist  3 года назад +1

      @@mustaqim6642 well usually injuries of barbel are permanent. If one of the barbels is dangling that could be a defect. But don't worry it's harmless as long as the fish is healthy I think it would be fine.

    Hi any tips on padding the sides as my aro has deep cuts after hitting the side from the jumps
    Thank you👍🏽

    • @TheSimpleAquarist
      @TheSimpleAquarist  3 года назад

      There are many ways to pad the glass edge on our aquarium braces :
      1- Rubber hose - (just split it and slot in)
      2- Thick sponges - can be bought online ( you can strap it with tape)
      3.Cover your tank will an acrylic or glass cover right above the braces.

    • @Restin_J_face

    • @TheSimpleAquarist
      @TheSimpleAquarist  3 года назад +1

      @@Restin_J_face im not sure how your tank is built - if you covered it those 10mm-12mm edges won't be that dangerous. If option 3 doesn't work for you then you should look into options 1 & 2.

    Bro my arowana, approx 6 inches, became very jumpy today. He jumped like 8-10 times at the place where filter output water flowing back to aquarium. He jumped high until he hits the aquarium lit. I have checked the area and no insects whatsoever for him to jump.
    Today morning I did water change as usual and pasted the white background sticker surrounding the aqua. Can be it stress due to this ?
    I saw some injury to his head as well, not that serious but feel bad to my lovely pet.
    What should I do ?
    Please advice

    • @TheSimpleAquarist
      @TheSimpleAquarist  3 года назад

      Yes definitely, changing the background to white is like changing it environment, I suggest turning off the aquarium light for a couple of days until it settles in. As for the injuries, just treat it will salt it will recover in a few week's time.
