'Play' was originally written as an instrumental, but Saiki liked it so much she asked Miku to write some lyrics for it.
Even though Miku gives her biggest rebel yells, they just sound so sweet & innocent. Just love her.
I want to read the book, 'Music Theory According To Kanami'. I think we will all learn something new. She is a genius.
And the last chord of Play is the first chord you hear in Domination -- at the end of this video they are getting back into position for the start of Domination. And Play is great -- an instrumental with a voice part added on (Saiki wanted to join in, so they wrote her a part). And in the middle Akane makes Saiki laugh -- you can hear it in her voice.
I love how at the end Miku trying to get back to her pedal board and has to sit down on the stage riser to get there. She’s such a tiny rocker!😄💪🏻🤘🏻

You're right- MISA is cool beyond belief and always has been- one word name in capitals for a start. Not so many words but full of style. There are some early photos of her in grunge bands pre Band-Maid, while she was still at music school 2011-12, on stage wearing dark glasses and using her original old Fender Jazz bass and looking as cool as F'n hell.
When the chorus comes and the pigeon tells you to sing, you sing! ☺

“Play” was originally meant to be an instrumental mainly for Akane, Misa, & Kanami. Saiki and Miku heard them rehearsing and liked it so much, they wanted to make a song of it. Miku ran off and quickly penned some lyrics and the song “Play” was born. The early 2017 performance is my favorite, as the intro is heavier and more thunderous. Good review of a great song.
I kind of want to hear the instrumental version of this song. I bet it’s fire.
There should be a preservation order placed on B-M's green lasers. They are as synonymous to a B-M live show as BAND-MAID are to delivering killer Hard Rock music :)

You are one of the few I have heard point out Miku's shout near the end. So well executed and timed. Yeah many reactors have tied themselves in knots trying to figure out the whole chorus structure of this song. One guy called it pre pre chorus followed by pre chorus followed by chorus. Another one said it it was pre chorus. Chorus, post chorus. Great reaction!

originally an instrumental however Saiki the lead singer loved it so mush she bullied Miku (rhythm guitar/second vocalist/lyric writer) to give her some lyrics so she could join in.
also did you catch when saiki tried to make akane mess up only for akane to pull faces back at he making saiki giggle through her lines
They just.....well, play. And better than anybody. Band-Maid is a unique an phenomenal gem of the Earth. Sure many people in the comments will recommend you certein songs of theirs to react to. to be honest just pick any, you'll be immensely impressed and is just the beginning of a truly life-changing journey.

They seem to come up with a different opening for this song every so often, so if they play "Play" in October expect it to be different.

A masterclass in live rock music.
They go right into 'Domination' LIVE right after this. But this isn't even the best LIVE version of this song. Not only is the other version better musically, it has Fire. Not metaphorically either. Giant columns of flame! But you can only find it on Bilibili now. This one is very energetic though.
Every Band-Maid performance and MV is not only exceptional, but is guaranteed to leave you smiling. You'll also discover that your favorite song from them will generally be the one you are currently listening to. I mean, what's better: Puzzle or Moratorium, Play or Freedom? Out of 118 songs, that's a distinction unique to Band-Maid - considered by many to be the best hard rock band in the world! And as for picking who’s a favorite Maid… that’s like asking which is more awesome: a Kauai sunrise, or a Kauai sunset? Thx, Ross!
Glad you noticed Akane's drums during the mid-song solo trade-off between MISA and Kanami. A lot of people miss that and Akane just kills it.

The intro to this song is always changing. They typically re-work it for every new tour.

Misa is always cool
Since this was original supposed to be an instrumental I'd love for them to finish it as such since the intro is so killer.....that would be special. Since you do stop the video several times I think you could get away with showing the video as is with no special effects......correct me if I'm wrong. Of all the bands coming out of Japan Band-Maid has the best writing and Saiki's vocals are second to none. I tried to listen to the "other" Japanese bands but they just don't sound as good as Band-Maid....not even close......IMHO

You mentioned several Japanese bands you've discovered. I'll suggest two others you should check out:
Asterism: a three-piece progressive, mainly instrumental, band made of stars, as the name implies. Here are three suggestions that make up a nice suite:

These were all recorded in their studio September 2021. By the way, they are Hal-Ca, Miyu, and Mio.
Gacharic Spin (with their various spin-offs) an all-female band with some righteous musicians. They've had various line-ups and vocalists over the years so they've had other iterations, like DOLL$BOXX and others. They're a little hard to pin down, sometimes very pop, sometimes very funky, sometimes very heavy. Here are three suggestions:

The first one is from 2020, the other two are from 2021. They are Angelina, Tomo-zo, Oreo, Hana, and F Chopper Koga.
Not sure if you have but check out some of the live videos from the Zepp Tokyo concert from 2018. The mix is way better than this show. I find Kanami’s guitar is too low on this.
An instrumentalist? Why no one recommend him Asterism?
MISA's pick hiding between finger and slap is NOT something exclusive to MISA. It is a technique used by jazz bass and guitar players for decades. Not really extraordinary at all, an old and accepted thing in jazz and prog.
